    A typical Lagavulin. The Distillers Edition is much sweeter and milder compared to the "normal" 16-year-old Lagavulin. The smoke is comparatively not so intense. Whether the higher price is justified in comparison to the "normal" Lagavulin is difficult to say, since both have the same Brennereicharakter but yet somehow different. Nevertheless, I like the Distillers Edition 2014 very well.
    • Nose
      Fine, sweet and subtle smoke pours out of the glass. Malted fruit mixes pleasant smoke. An orange aroma meets vanilla and, of course, slightly peaty smoke again.
    • Taste
      First come citrus fruits, oranges, to the fore. These fruity aromas are immediately covered by fine peaty smoke. Light salt and iodine over the tongue and go into a pleasant peppery pungency.
    • Finish
      The sharpness of the taste becomes more intense. The smoke comes back and ends in a slightly bitter coffee note. The finish is medium in length, finely smoky and ends with a fine hint of coffee and a hint of nut.

    An overly sweet lagavulin in my view. The sherry coats the whole experience and tames the smoke. Nonetheless it's a quality sherry influence with nice dried fruit notes.

    I like this series because PX is good for Lagavulin.
    • Nose
      Peat and smoke, citrus, ripe fruits, sawdust, sherry and camphor.
    • Taste
      Citruses, sweet fruits, honey, salted caramel, pepper, burnt barbecue, smoke and ash.
    • Finish
      Long, smoky, bittersweet.

    The good Distiller's Edition - bottled in annual batches - always very good malts, but they lose a bit of the typical Lagavulin character!
    • Nose
      light campfire smoke, strong sherry, fruits, herbs, oak;
    • Taste
      powerful, warm onset, lots of sherry, oily, light smoke, pinch of salt, getting dry, oak, tobacco, complex;
    • Finish
      long finish, tobacco and pepper fade away;

      Wonderfully soft, hint of smoke, little sweetness from the sherry.
    • Taste
      85 85
      More smoke, bit salty, earthy
    • Finish
      86 86
      Pretty long and fairly dry. I really miss a few% alcohol in the dram.

    • Nose
      Smoke from damp wood, lime cream, a dash of mint. Lemon thyme, orange peel, cookie dough. Sawdust, a touch of olive oil.
    • Taste
      Grilled lemons with honey. Caramelized apples, green tea with candy sugar. Milk chocolate. Peach ice tea. Burnt bread crust.

    Enjoyable but not complex. Maybe an off bottle? I’m not sure how this ended up with a 10-point lower score than the standard bottling.
    • Nose
      Sweet and rich, but not cloying. Softer campfire smoke than the original, but still mostly smoky and difficult to find any fruit or sherry.
    • Taste
      Rich mouthfeel.  Sweet attack, then smoke and chili.
    • Finish
      Turning anemic, brief finish. Peat and dark chocolate.
