Character: Sherry, juicy raisins, campfire smoke and earthy notes make the music here. A powerful, intense filling that can assert its autonomy in the mouth even after Laga and Laphi.
Rating: A delicious and intense bottling, of the type "really good drinkable". Nothing that makes me humble, but good 88 points all around.
    • Nose
Basic flavors: sherry, peat, smoke, earth, citrus, tobacco, leather
Description: Sherry of the earthy kind. Accompanied by some peat and campfire smoke. Very intense and also neat malty. Peu a peu come through a bit of lemon and tobacco leaves and add a slightly fresh touch to the sweet-smoky tone. Where are the bourbon barrels? For me clearly outweighs the sherry. Together with some leather a rather dark, earthy nose. Beyond raisins, there are hardly any fruits to be discovered here.
    • Taste
Basic flavors: peat, smoke, ash, spices, malt, chocolate, dried fruit, vanilla
Description: The taste is dominated by the peat and peat smoke from the beginning. Type ashtray. Neat pepper is also present. It gets warm and spicy in the mouth. Malt, dark chocolate and raisins complete the delicious and intense, but less complex taste profile. The mouthfeel is very nice and a slightly salty impression provides a certain tension. There is some vanilla in the transition to the finish.
    • Finish
Basic flavors: smoke, ash, earth, tobacco, oak, dried fruits
Description: Campfire smoke, ash, earthy notes and a hint of tobacco sound pleasant with a rather discreet approaching oak. On top of that, juicy raisins echo deliciously.

The mix of sherry and bourbon casks plus the mix of peated and unpeated casks: two clues that goes in the direction of a distillery used to fill both casks with peated/unpeated dram and that is very close to Port Askaig: Bunnahabhain!

Ps. The dram is quite nice

my guess for this sample was a Caol Ila... was not that far off :)

    • Nose
Smoke, peat, leather, also has a heavy sweet tone of maybe peach
    • Taste
      Salty, sweetish (peat), some liquorice
    • Finish
Medium to long, inclines to salmiak

    • Nose
Grassy peat, earth, some fennel. Loads of citrus come out, but still clinical at it’s core. Smoked fish too, some olives, moss….Wow, this is a great beginning. Straightforward peat, with enough side-notes to keep it interesting.
    • Taste
The peat is strong with this one. Lime to add sweetness. Then tobacco, smoked fish and a big gulp of salty seawater.
    • Finish
The earthiness returns here, leaves, tobacco again, old leather. A medium long finish.

Tasted during a blind tasting competition in May/June 2016.
    • Nose
Peated, but with something "off": musty, moldy, sweaty socks - yet very sweet. Leather as well. Whiff of citrus. Fresh sea breeze.
    • Taste
Wow! Great mouthfeel! Mouthcoating… *sigh*… this is heaven in a glass. Fresh citrus (lime), with sweet peatiness, ashy. Saltiness coming through at the end.
    • Finish
The maritime flavours keep lingering; peatiness and sweetness are taking turns.

The smell is typically Islay but on the flat side of things. This whisky from the Coal Ila distillery seems to be not as rich and lush as I expected. But I have to note that my appreciation for peated whisky’s is not as strong as it was as nowadays I’m more in to the un-peated sherry cask matured single malts.
All in all a fun dram but not my thing anymore.

    Tasted blind during PO2016
    • Nose
A fresh, fruity, and sweet whisky with aromas of citrus (lemon, orange peel), subtle smoke, gooseberries, grain, malt, subtle tar, sea breeze, campfire, floral tones (mainly violets), hay, grass, butter, hint of coconut, vanilla, subtle sultanas, white pepper and oak.
    • Taste
A spicy, sweet and fresh whisky with aromas of honey, pepper, smoke, aniseeds, hint of mint, tannins, oak, oily tones, bayleaf, earthy tones, boiled milk, fennel, butter, grass, hay, citrus, caramel, orange peel, tannins and oak.
    • Finish
A long and sweet finish with aromas of smoke, tar, aniseeds, mint, honey, licorice root, subtle tannins and oak.

    • Nose
Peach, orange, peat dust, curry, coconut, pineapple, white chocolate, vanilla and a little candy cane. Perhaps of whiff of blue cheese.
    • Taste
Peat, pepper, curry, peach, orange, chocolate, barley and a little beef.
    • Finish
Peat, curry, vanilla, beef and salami. The fruitiness is pretty much gone now, perhaps a little faint banana.
