  1. Vince scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

fine example of GlenDronach. Those Oloroso single casks aged 16-24 yrs rarely go wrong.

  2. p4blo scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

1993 is said to be THE vintage for Glendronach. This one fully proves it.
    • Nose
Violets, coffee beans, anise, tobacco. It's quite herbal too. A touch of rubber, balsamico, soy sauce, orange. Quite an unusual combination for Glendronach, but it works really well.
    • Taste
Very round, no rough edges. Slightly sweet on milk chocolate, caramel, prunes and raisins. The typical profile of PX Glendronach with no off notes, nice structure and good complexity and intensity.
    • Finish
Quite long, more chocolate liqueur and strawberries.

  3. ASWhisky scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

tasty whisky, with some intense treats
the nose builds up some tension
The mouth has some intense notes with decreasing tension and a slight alcoholic touch
the departure is completely lacking in tension

    mmh, I like them indeed

    Ranking: 1st nose, 2nd mouth, 3rd finish
    • Nose
      warm liquid chocolate
Wood fibers & raisins in sweet sherry
a slightly sour note (cucumber barrel)
in the background vanilla and glue note
    • Taste
      spicy sweet
      raisin chocolate
      Fruit with glue note
a warm, almost smoky burning sensation in the throat
      a slight alcohol note
a flash of chocolates or chocolate with alcohol
    • Finish
      medium
      chocolate
      a little alcohol
      getting dry
      Wood, herbs
      dark chocolate & wood
      dried apple rings remain

The towering nose also saves him 90 points
An incredibly cool nose that could not carry old sherry aromas better - extreme balance between fruit and oak, leather and spices. Sit back and enjoy.
Not quite as balanced in the mouth. The spicy aromas push the fruit back. Lots of oak, dark chocolate, only after that sultanas. Tart but not too dry. I like it best with a little water to around 50%. But it can withstand even more water.
The finish pleases a little better again, very long and again with a nice harmony of the spicy and sweet-fruity components. The more water, the more flavorful.

Very convenient but personally I'm not too much into butterscotch - however, I noticed that many WB bottlings go into butterscotch - somebody at WB must like it
    • Nose
      89 89
Caramel, toffee, butterscotch, also some dried fruits, sherry wood
    • Taste
      90 90
Oily, good sweetness, more toffee, spices, little nutmeg
    • Finish
      89 89
      Medium long, warm, smooth

  11. knopfler99 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

personally too sweet and the alcohol note bothers me a bit, I did not try it with water. Otherwise, however, a very neat Glendronach.
    • Nose
      91 91
First, raisins, dried plums and pickled (rum) cherries, a light alcohol touch rising in the nose, in the background is still some caramel
    • Taste
      89 89
very strong onset, a certain sharpness in the mouth, brown sugar, spiciness - again, the slight alcohol note, salivation and a violent sweetness comparable to brown sugar candy. In the background a light woody bitterness.
    • Finish
      85 85
strong sweetness on the finish, reminiscent of (Ricola Swiss herbal tea (Gut'Nacht tea granules), light bitterness, dried herbs, and a certain sharpness, the alcohol note remains here., First strong finish, but then he tilts quickly back down.

Comments: a perfect  and very special whisky!

Nose: Plum, grape, caramel, old wood, dark chocolate, gingerbread, a little orange, prune and dried fig. Palate: coffee, tannic bitterness (wood), light plum, dark chocolate, some nuts The finale: revolves around dry plum with a certain sweet bitterness, the water makes it very good, it swims well and it increases its roundness 88/100

Not my cup of tea, but that's not a surprise.  I found this Glendronach very sweet, like a cask strength rum that lacks character and complexity.  Water doesn't do it any good I'm afraid.

    Ruben, whiskynotes:
Ah, another one of these GlenDronach 1993 single casks distilled in January of that year. This time Oloroso butt #23 bottled for Whiskybase in The Netherlands. As a side note, I’ve heard all remaining casks from 1993 are
currently ‘on hold’. None of them will be bottled for clubs or stores,
all that is left will only be used for the official releases.Nose: rich and expressive. A kind of juicy plum and bramble aroma,
with rummy overtones. Cinnamon. Big nutty notes (roasted chestnut,
walnut) and leather. Slightly dry. Dark chocolate and toffee. After a
while it becomes a bit minty, with just a slight mustiness in the
background. Mouth: punchy, with a sweet and sour base of cherries, plums
and raisins. After that it moves to chocolate and mocha notes, as well
as herbal notes and a faint gingery heat. Toffee, dates and tobacco.
Pepper. Mon Cheri. Finish: good length, not too dry, entirely on dark
chocolate, spices and coffee.A really nice GlenDronach 1993 again. This is one of the heavier
versions I’ve come across, with lots of dark chocolate and a bit less of
    the bright fruity notes.

Prune, coffee, a little woody, a little alcohol and a very slight touch of sulfur. Very nice gourmet attack and sweet caramel, coffee. The texture is very beautiful too, sticky, the alcohol is very well integrated, better than the nose. The tannins are fine and light on the finish. Very long finish on the woody and spices (nutmeg, sweet pepper and salt). Nose a little behind the mouth but beautiful Sherry in the end. Swims very badly: the dilution destroys the nose.

  24. Falnor scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Fantastic Glendronach! Just perfect in the smooth dark/ brown notes. Personally I think the best kind for a Glendronach. Therefore a very high rating.
    • Nose
Bring out the mocha cake! Chocolate in different forms. Praline filling, milkchocolade and truffles. Cappuccino with a cinnamon roll. In the end more nuts like walnut.
    • Taste
Again the mocha in a very easy drinkable way. Nice and creamy with soft coffee, leather with some polish. The first fruits are cherries and prune. Hazelnut chocolate spread.
    • Finish
Darker chocolate, cappuccino, herbs and it remains true to the mocha! I love the fact that it remains sweet and not dry or bitter at all.

A delicacy that should be enjoyed drop by drop. Bigger swallowing amounts would be almost too penetrating.
    • Nose
Dark raw cane sugar, cucumber salad, vegetable, but also some vanilla
    • Taste
thick sticky, sweet sauce, with a tartness from the herb garden, seasoned with a little Maggi
    • Finish
spicy herbs, cinnamon and sherry barrels from the time of the pirates

A great cask selected by the folks at Whiskybase. Good balance between
various base characteristics. Easy to drink even at full strength and it
does not tire your tongue either with overly sweet or oaky sensations.
Needless to say, it sold out in a couple of days.
    • Nose
Immediately very herbal. Sweet wood spice, a little sappy, but not
really “green”. Complex and densely interwoven sherry profile. Marzipan,
demerara sugar, a touch of menthol, and coffee liqueur. With water:
more perfumey. Rose water, and oranges. Cointreau even.
    • Taste
Full-bodied arrival. Good balance between sweet and dry. Dried candied
fruit, cherries and figs primarily – stuff with very little acidity.
Mint liqueur, bordering to sweetened herbal tea. Sweet coffee sprinkled
with powdered oak and cocoa. Hah!
    • Finish
Medium-long. Sweet and juicy. Oranges and milk chocolate.

Glendronach 21 yo 1993/2014 (52.1%, OB for Whiskybase, oloroso sherry butt, cask #23, 681 bottles)  Colour: dark amber. Nose: it’s drier indeed, starting right on chocolate and coffee. Warm coffee dregs, then some kind of fruity liqueur, hard to describe. Could that be Parfait Amour? (which is some kind of orange liqueur anyway, despite the unnatural purple colour). Also whiffs of soy sauce, which I always enjoy mucho. With water: as often, it’s the earthiness that comes out more. Mouth (neat): sweeter than expected. Very sweet, in fact, but balance is kept. Cointreau and Kahlua, fifty-fifty. Are we 100% sure it was oloroso? Or was it sweetened oloroso? Also a little oregano, pepper and chives. With water: always this feeling of spiced jam and liqueur, but that works very well. Hot chocolate, orange liqueur, Italian hazelnut liqueur, a drop of Jaeger. Okay, okay, Jaegermeister, not Jaeger-Lecoultre! (oh c’mon, S.!) Finish: good length. It’s really all ion spiced chocolate and Cointreau. Cloves and cinnamon in the aftertaste. Comments: appropriately Christmassy, I’d say. And excellent once again. Aren’t they masters at ‘this’? SGP:652 - 88 points.

Excellent! Beautiful frame complexity with this blend of fruity, woody, roasted, sour, bitter and mellow. It is a tightrope whisky, which balances several sons at a time. Maybe not the purest, but certainly not the least interesting. A review at aeration, which should give it a little volume and roundness.
    Sample without dilution.
    • Nose
Beautiful oloroso, on old wood, chocolate, macerated grapes, walnut liquor. It gradually relaxes its woody and gives way to blood orange and white flowers. An old cognac side, too, with gingerbread and cardamom. Espresso. Classical and classy.
    • Taste
Soft attack. Beautiful woody, frankly on the roasted hazelnut. Praline, coffee slightly milk, with a background of citrus.
    • Finish
Long and soft, on the nut, the coffee and a kind of acid bitterness, which gives it the go and the dynamism.

Interesting that while this was praised as nearly sold out after just some days the shop stocks seem to increase each day. All returns or just an old marketing trick? :)

    90/91.

I've had several 1993 Oloroso GlenDronachs, and this one is clearly the smoothest of them all. Especially compared to cask 33 for Abbey Whisky, this one is much less extreme. This one is probably a bit more accessible. Its colour is also more brownish, which reflects in the taste: more mocha and less red fruits. Which one I prefer would differ based on my mood, but I have to say that I more often choose for the power of casks 33 and 475.
    • Nose
Mocha, raisin, dark cherry, blueberry, brown sugar, toffee, date, Bastogne cooky, bramble, cranberry and vanilla. With water also quite some prune.
    • Taste
Dark cherry, toffee, mocha, cranberry, brown sugar, hazelnut paste, blueberry, raisin, date, leather, prune and pepper.
    • Finish
Mocha, toffee, blueberry, cherry, brown sugar, raisin, date and plum.

Is a very good whisky, tried it first without water and it was very soft for the percentage of alcohol in the bottle. With some drops of water it opens up good. If you put water put very few !!

    Tasting note by Glendronach Distillery:

Nose: Dark chocolat-cake drizzled with treacle and prune syrup spiced with a little touch of cinnamon and clove oil.

    Appearance: Polished cherry wood.

Palate: Rich sour plum and espresso softening to mocca and sun dried raisins with a steeped barley background.
