This whisky was part of the following tasting:
    Port Ellen 20YO 1982 Lombard’s Jewels of Islay (WB25250)
Port Ellen 24YO 1982 The Whisky Fair (WB5693)
    Port Ellen 22YO 1978 Rare Malts (WB2489)

It develops interestingly, but I believe it would suit someone who likes a bit more peat in their whisky than I do. Nevertheless, it's a pretty bold whisky that was really interesting to try.

Much more "aggressive" nose than Lombard’s, with more pronounced alcohol and peat. Campfire smoke, charred vanilla, boiled milk. Herbal, less salty than Lombard’s but still has those sea salt and caramel notes. Fruitiness isn't very pronounced; it's more straight forward notes of long aged Islay whisky with non-ashy peat from bourbon barrels. With time in the glass, these notes intensify, but I'm not getting any new notes so far. With more time, I get stable notes, old furniture, damp cellar, and stale notes become more prominent. This style isn't really my preference, but it's evident that it's a serious whisky.

Sharp, oily, very grassy whisky. Strong herbal notes, earthy peat, and mint. Alcohol is well integrated, with notes of tobacco, leather armchair, vanilla, star anise, and pepper. It's nicely milky, and you can feel that it's quite an old whisky. The bitterness might be a bit too pronounced for me, but it's not excessive. Pleasant to drink, and the complexity is there. One point higher than the nose.
    • Finish
      86 86
Fresh, mint, milk, very mild wood bitterness, medium length.
