    Uh yes, at which the ghosts should divorce. Not just the stuff. On the one hand, the fruit notes and the really beguiling sweet taste, but then this immature, which clouds the picture. Amazing Bourbon notes for a complete Port Maturation, if you like strong smoky whiskys, that's good. If not you will probably only see the mistakes. That probably explains the many bad reviews. Reviews beyond the 90 points are in my view but also greatly exaggerated.

      Strong smoke brand Kilchoman, with immediately red fruits, especially cherries and red grapes. Red grits with a lot of bourbon custard. Whitecurrants. Later comes something hay-like, but very different from the Speysidern, isolated and fresher. The alcohol bizzles something in between, but is in principle well integrated.
    • Taste
      Caramel pudding with salt, dark, almost viscous, chocolate sweetness. Then warms youthful, metallic bitterness in the ash rain, at the same time even tougher and sweeter, it is thought, every moment begins to pull strings. The alcohol is soft, goes well and pure.
    • Finish
      Medium long, tart fruity notes, also here with a bit youthful bitterness, but unobtrusive. Softens quickly sweet peat smoke.

    **Brackish Strawberries**
    Kilchoman has quite a few port casks in their warehouses from a non-disclosed port producer from the Douro valley in Portugal. Part of those were put to sleep in 2011 to be released three years later at a cask strength of 55% in 2014. So this is not a finish, but full maturation on Ruby Port casks, just sayin’.

    While the typical traits of Kilchoman are recognizable – peat smoke, ashes, citrus fruit, vanilla – they are completely overpowered by the cask, that adds strawberry jam and raspberry milkshake. Some old, leather books, a dusty attic and that about sums up the nose. It’s just… it all seems a bit out of sync. It is almost like the Kilchoman spirit and the port cask have decided to tolerate each other, without integrating. Does that make sense? The port is like a layer on top of the Kilchoman.

    The arrival is creamy and pretty spicy. I get those typical Kilchoman notes again – quite brackish in fact – while to port cask does its utmost to add red fruit, but… it clashes a bit. I get chewing tobacco, strawberries, cherry candy and rum-raisins and that all sounds delicious if it weren’t for the lack of balance of this malt. It cannot seem to make up its mind and that is confusing for my brain! Salty and smoky, as I am used from Kilchoman, or red fruit and sweetness galore? Darn, this is difficult.

    The finish is very long and pretty spicy on chili pepper, candied ginger and cloves. The smoke lingers forever as if trying to say: ‘Hey, just so you know, I really am an Islay whisky!’.

    Not really my thing. I like port, I really do. And I love Kilchoman. But the combination of the two does not convince me. One of the few Kilchoman that I’m not particularly fond of.

    Tried at the regulars' table, therefore shorter notes. Solid, rather dry kilchoman.

      Wet hay, damp, simmering oak from a campfire on the beach, wet leaves, ham, pumpernickel, brown sugar and forest honey
    • Taste
      Salt, damp algae, Parma ham, damp grass, ginger, camphor, cardamom, citrus peel
    • Finish
      Moist earth, kadamom, nutmeg, camphor, roasted malt, medium length

    In 2017 I’ve visited this idillic distillery on the far west of Islay. It caught me since that day but somehow every time I wanted to buy a few bottles and/or samples I ended up buying different stuff. But...Finally...this week I pulled the trigger and bought 14 samples and 1 bottle of Kilchoman. Time for an in depth liquid tour of what this distillery can produce! Number 11 has been poured into the glass. I’m curious, sceptic, but curious. 3yo is usually not something I feel attracted to.
    • Nose
      An interesting play between young spirit that wants to push it’s character and the port cask that want to make clear it’s influence. Sweet dark fruits like bramble and blueberries. Sugar, malted barley and clearly raisins. Also a whiff of spice. Interesting nose. Not that bad actually.
    • Taste
      The palate is not so much dominated by the ABV as I expected. It is a bit restless though. It did already get some body from the cask. Raspberry, honey and ashes are the most outspoken for me.
    • Finish
      The finish is one that can satisfy. It doesn’t bring anything new to the table.

      This whisky clearly offers more then I expected before but I do think it doesn’t have enough depth and complexity. Therefore I would have loved to see this one mature for several more years. It has been bottled at the beginning of it full potential. That’s a big pitty.

    I just like the young Port smoker and this one is doing really well too!

      The sweet smoke note comes to me first, followed by raisins
    • Taste
      On the palate, the sweet smoke remains, plus dark chocolate and dark berries
    • Finish
      The smoky notes stick to the tongue for a long time
