Whisky Reviews for Black Bottle Blended Scotch Whisky

34 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 74.97 points

This Blended Scotch is not what it once was after the radical 'rebranding' to please market demands and make it 'easily accessible'. The aroma of Black Bottle is restrained with wood sap, bitter grain and some floral notes. Peat smoke? Nope. Tastewise, youthful harshness and sweet malt combine with honey, ginger and faint peatiness. Dominated by cheap grain whisky, the finish is bitter, short and altogether featureless. Having lost the characterful impact of Islay malts, this blend only remains a shadow of its former glory. It's drinkable - no more, no less.

Perhaps the worst blended scotch whisky I can remember tasting the past five years. An insipid root beer candy note dominates the taste. Do not go here. Sadly, black bottle once had a nice peat component and more maltiness that is now sorely missing in the new recipe.

N- Another often overlooked old horse that are not so popular in this part of the world. Fine warm grain comes thru quite brilliantly with honey. sweet smokes and over-ripe white fruits, black tea scented with berries, floral and tobacco. Quite light on nose but comes with handful of evolving aromas. Balanced of oak with nutty, corn flour and meaty. Pleasant and relaxing. (87/21)

P- Weak on body initially, but gaining traction as it developed to skimmed milky palate. Gentle sweet smokes, dried plum and honey. More salts come thru. (85/19)

F- Short-medium, lingers well, some very fine grain in the vat. Pleasant kind of blends that everyone would enjoy over a garden barbeque party. (85/19)

    B/B- 86/20

You have to really work at the nose, it is restrained there is a little peat and dried cold ashes, wafer, salted caramel & honey.
The palate is sweet with a fruit gum element , a little barley sugar and a hint of caramel.
This has a nice mouthfeel but it is also a little metallic at the end and it fades too quickly but for £20-£22 it is not bad value and generally for beginners a good easy introduction to whisky.
I understand what Timo is saying, all the rough edges that gave black bottle a bit of an edge years ago have gone, they have been rounded off so to speak which is why non whisky drinkers would b fins this sort of thing more accessible and for the price a god alternative to gin?
My score is not particularly high but the more I have the more I am liking it, I still think this is a good solid buy at the price and for a daily sipper it is fine if a little unexciting.

Not very memorable, but not bad either. The nose is the best part. The finish is the worst.

Light, some fruit, but not fresh, old and musty, but not in a good way, dark sugar, somewhat fatty, some honey, some hey, some mossy wood. I thought the colour was due to adding caramel

Sweet, some honey, some hay, again the dark sugar, little to no fruit, slightly fatty
    • Finish

Short, fades quickly, a bit bitter at the end, some hints of the dark sugar

a blend of more than all its splendor, based on Bunna! finally seen its price, not so bad!
    • Nose
      smoke, spices and caramel
    • Taste
same sensations, simple, not very attractive, but the danger of being reused can occur!
    • Finish
      simple, short, spicy and smoky

I quite like the bottle - it is just a shame that the contents don't live up to it  Will get you tipsy, but you won't have overly fond memories of supping it.

I prefer the older bottles but this is quite inoffensive.
    • Nose
There is nothing that jumps out.
    • Taste
There is no real bite to this whisky any more - it is quite soft on the palate - great if you want to slip into the arms of Morpheus, but not something to admire.
    • Finish
Quite anonymous - nothing that will blow you away.
