An elegant (Oloroso?) sherry cask in which this PE was allowed to mature. Its components alternate steadily between intense and subdued ones. Caramel, mulled wine, berry jam, rum pot, Feuerzangenbowle (a German brandy), cranberries, very sweet, honey. Those are the sweet components. Complementing them are the somewhat wilder aromas: BBQ sauce, sooty, smoky, a bit dirty, flint, glowing charcoal, slightly sulfurous, hot rubber, minerals (graphite, slate), a hot capacitor, an over-revving electric motor from a model train, sooty steam (steam locomotive), and also a bit oily. It continues on and on, merrily and closely interwoven. One could sniff endlessly and would always discover something new. The palate: initially sweet, forest honey, then drier, oak wood, minerals, earthy, and leathery, leather care from the tack room. The second sip is much more pleasant, and the sweetness from the nose is evident here as well. Later, wilder aromas emerge: matchstick heads, iodine, sooty, transformer burn, bromine, and salty sea air.
The finish is honey-sweet, creamy, lovage, soy sauce, salty, extinguished campfire, coal, and a bit drier. Overall, a wonderful interplay between dry, fruity sherry and an almost tropical sweetness. This is truly cinematic.
