Fancy bottle, marketing-driven NAS presentation and a hefty price tag: why on earth would I review Highland Park Dark Origins? Because it's surprisingly good! Heavy sherry aroma with spices, baked apple and distant peat smoke greets the nose. I get raisins, dates, polished wood and, oddly enough, menthol cigarettes. The taste is sweet, then astringent, before the sweetness returns with walnuts, black tea and well-measured sherry cask influence. After a savory and mildly peaty finish, I must confess I am almost sad that this whisky has been discontinued.

Candied oranges, caramel a little trafficoté, but malt, a little salt, butter, fine smoke make this NAS a dram of choice!

[March, 2015]  I comped this bottle to a sulphur-loving friend (german by his dark origin, what else?).  I bought it for 65 Euro in March, 2015.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 75.  My notes state "the dark origins are clearly located way down south underground in a place called HELL".  It is heavily spoiled with sulphur and I found it at least a suitable name for this release.  Not sure if later batches are that much wounded by sulphur too (any comments on that are highly welcome)...

I drank this in Whitby Abby cemetery as I watched the sun set, bats were flying around and the church clock was chiming, amazing location and a wonderful drink for the occasion thanks to Peatbogger.
    • Nose
A soaked summer fruit pudding my mother in law makes and the smoke just lingers in the background nicely, there is some ginger biscuit and sticky toffee pudding, it smells light.
    • Taste
This is like a fine dark red wine that is slightly smoky, a strange combination but it works well for me, it is really quite smooth, prune juice from a tin, there is some dryness but that's fine.
    • Finish
The finish is long and dry, in fact, it's very dry, with some smoke on the death.

  6. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Ingenious combination of sherry and peat in pleasant drinkable, but full of form! (Of course, if I included NAS and Price, it would be closer to 85P, but I do not)
    • Nose
Beautiful sherry, spices, overripe banana toasted, ginger, clove, rosemary, berry bushes
    • Taste
Very aromatic and full, quite dry (but I like it), orange peel, dark chocolate with maraschino cherry, in the background constantly the typical HP smoke / light peat
    • Finish
Medium to long, dry, sweet (cherry) and some smoke remain

A different but very good expresion of HP.
    • Nose
So unlike HP. Unusual amount of sherry nicely mixed with sweet peat. Earthy notes with a mix of nuts. Smoke, some rubber and a little salty.

      Chocolate fudge and some orange.
    • Taste
Fruity on both dark red plums and raisins as well as oranges.

Salty, spicy, smoky. The typical HP is there, but there's so much more, I quite like it.
    • Finish
Good and long, with sherry, smoke and coffee. A bit drying.

  9. Issie did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

    • Nose
some menthol, some earth, minimal sulfur (matches), overripe peach, pine needles, dark honey, dried fruits, blackberries, strawberries, cherry and in the background herbs / grasses (that must be this heather)
    • Taste
Honey, cereals, dried fruits, blackberries, lime, grapefruit, some earth, some pepper

  10. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Sweet sherry, some peat, vanilla. Trendier younger, but beautifully composed Highland Park.
