To get to the pleasant and exciting experience I had with this, you need to give this whisky a bit of time in the open bottle (2-3 months) and also a few minutes in the glass (15-20 mins). Then you have an old-fashioned complex and rich dram like you only get with very few distilleries nowadays (e.g. Mortlach, Benromach). But unlike these Single Malts you can get old Dimples (or Pinch) for very low prices if you look out for bargains at online auctions.
    • Nose
Please note that this tasting note is for a 1970s 12-year-old Dimple, so probably distilled in the early to mid 60s. My version is a German import with 40% Vol.

Rich, old casks are shining through this composition. Leafy, earthy and slightly metallic (copper?), dried fruits, bitter oranges, beef stock and smoke. What a deep and complex nose, fantastic!
    • Taste
A little bit thinner than on the nose of course, but the mouthfeel is still magnificent after 40 years in the bottle. You won't get a blend like this in a recent bottling.
Bittersweet attack, with dark, sweet and sour fruits (blackberry preserves), lots of soot, damp storage room, old polished oak and salt. There's definitely a peaty backbone to this.
Although it used to be a heavy seller, by today's standards this whisky is far from being everybody's darling. You can definitely taste the old casks, the damp dunnage warehouses and the coal fired stills from yesteryear. It's still well-rounded and sweet, but has got this edge making it interesting and complex that you miss in recent heavily-marketed blends.
    • Finish
Surprisingly long for its 40%. Sweet, sooty and satisfying.
