  1. JoshNRW scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

A sample from Dottore's rarities bus and donated by Lameth.

The basic specifications were really good, but I had some concerns due to the dilution – completely unfounded in retrospect, because this is a fine, old Springbank with delicate aromas that perfectly suit my taste. No grit or machine oiliness (even though I generally like that in Springbank).

Between 91 and just under 92 points.
    • Nose

      91.5
The body in the blender glass is full, and the aromas are delicate and concentrated, balanced and structured. This is not a given considering the specifications of a blender glass.

The profile is already heading in the direction of Springbank, but it is not dirty, rather clean - perhaps comparable to the old Islay profiles of Ardbeg and Laphroaig, which had more fruit and less peat smoke.

I find salty-sweet lemon, lovely malt notes that seem older than 17 years, sweet almonds, high-quality marzipan that is not too heavy, mild seaweed, lovely oysters, a light sea breeze and phenolic aromas.
This could also be an old Clynelish.
    • Taste
      91 91
The palate begins wonderfully diverse and continues to expand – a fantastic blend of salty peat aromas, old barley sugar sweetness, spearmint, and caramelized fennel. Then the maritime peat aromas come to the fore, again oysters, dry, mineral Crémant with chalk and orange zest.

In the background, a dry bitterness from wet pebbles and light oak. Earl Grey with honey.
    • Finish
      92 92
The mouthfeel is optimal, reflecting the age and high alcohol content, with a slight bitterness behind the maritime fruit and peat notes.

The finish is at least medium-long, rather long and sufficiently waxy, less oily than the current Springbank distillate.
In the end, only the high-quality barley sugar sweetness remains, so it is not as complex as the nose and palate.
