I don't want to judge the PLV. So-so. But it's a good standard and fruity whisky too. All the key data are good, but we won't become friends. Sorry
    • Nose
Sweet red fruit basket in advance. The port notes are not neglected either. Hopefully the palate will keep what the nose promises.
    • Taste
Unfortunately, the port does not come through here. Pity ! Woody notes with cooked fruit. In the background there are still cider notes. Tender chocolate raisins with light fruits. For me violently sharp on the tongue. Is that the alcohol? ... or the wood?
    • Finish
Rather long with a bitterly sweet ending. Coffee in an oak cup with recurring fruit in honey.

It has now been almost ten years since this whisky was bottled and I am again confirmed that the malts in the past were of a higher quality. I think so because the port notes here are still reserved and only support the whisky. In the 2020s, such whiskys are usually only dominated by the respective cask. Luckily that's different here.
    • Nose
      87 87
The Highlander with the sweet and salty aromas can still be recognized. There are also red berries, some spicy aromas and a lot of malt. Everything is beautifully harmonious and sufficiently intense with the 46 percent and 14 years.
    • Taste
      86 86
A little round on the palate. Here the spicy, sweet and salty flavors whirl a bit in confusion on the palate. Dry strawberries again (I have to think of a dry strawberry sparkling wine). A little too much bitter wood notes in the back.
    • Finish
      86 86
The mouthfeel is good, still tingling a bit young and the slightly salty finish is almost medium-long.

On the nose as well as palate reminds me of a fruit compote, with a mix of dried fruits, prunes, but also apple and raisin. Fairly good mix of sweet and tart. Caramel and some pencil shavings. Reserved with a fairly short finish.

For me one of my secret favorites and for an affordable price.
Although I can understand if some don't like him as much as I do.
    • Nose

This is where opinions differ most often! For some, the aroma seems too artificial. For me, however, it is a beautiful and seductive fragrance that develops in the glass over time. Different red fruits are ensnared with that certain something. For me it is a mixture of marzipan and the scent of a grape sugar lollipop. After a while I also discover some vanilla.
    • Taste
      88 88
The red fruits are very present here and at the same time barrel flavor is noticeable. Nothing here seems artificial or watery to me.
    • Finish
      87 87
The fruit vibrates for a while and then gives off the slightly acidic wood note. The whole thing lingers for a medium to long time.

Nose: overcooked, overripe strawberries and raspberries, noticeable alcohol, slightly sulphurous (from the distillate or barrel?), Slightly woody. With more time to breathe: more wood and a few light spices.

On the tongue: strong onset, slightly spicy-pricklig, then juicy-sweeter, followed by warm woody notes, then tart until bitter coffee, to the end noticeably bitter.

    Finish: Bitter. Not much else.

Conclusion: inexperienced. For a supposedly "soft" Highlander with sweetish-sweet Port wine influences a pretty rough number.

Taste three times, always blind. I tipped the sherry bar, I did not recognize the port, I guess the alcohol for the first time 46%, the second time 48% and the last 50%. I wondered if it was anything from Glenfiddich, Tomatin did not attack me. I sat a lot and I tasted.
    • Nose
Pleasant scent, a lot of fruit (scented apricots, orange), a little nuts, and then light woody muddy or even smoky sherry style. (87 b)
    • Taste
Taste goes a lot in sherry style. Full, rich and pleasant, sweet, fruity, richly sparkling. Velvety flavor, with fruity acidity. (91 b)

The actual color is rosé but that is not available - anyhow I would expect a rather sweet and fruity whisky from a port cask but this one is really different - very maritime and actually fishy - strange
    • Nose
Seabreeze, seaweed, sea shells, smoked salmon - not much else to smell as this is very strong
    • Taste
Rosé wine, salty, seaweed again but a bit less than on the nose, little fruitiness, a bit smoky
    • Finish
      Medium long, zesty, grapefruits

  12. EinSpatzUnterVielen scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

The nose is exhausted relatively quickly, but the portnotes are unmistakable, all in all delicious, but a little flat and not very well integrated (like so many port malts), nice easy-drinking malt with lots of fruit from start to finish, good PLV.
    • Nose
fruity, first raspberries, currants, plum compote with cinnamon, dark chocolate, later nice fresh wood, vanilla and viiel peach, leather, peanut sauce
    • Taste
watery-silky, slightly alcoholic, lots of peach, peach melba, peach jam, cotton candy, popcorn with caramel, vanilla, pepper, orange, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, walnut, dark chocolate in coffee, cinnamon rolls, applesauce
    • Finish
medium-length, fast-drying, pepper, coffee notes and peach, then blueberries, black currants, blackcurrant leaves, whole light bitterness (like fresh blackcurrants from the shrub), oranges, walnut, porridge, fresh bread with redcurrant jelly

The nose and the finish are above the taste itself, somewhat one-sided and flat unfortunately and not as portly as the nose but worked.
    • Nose
At least one forms out the port, a beautiful medium-bright fruitiness of red apple, some floral and buttery sweetness, the port barrels often have together. In between, a bit of something alcoholic, yellow plums, cherry, honey melon, but sounds far more full of everything as it affects the nose
    • Taste
Honey melon, some pepper, green apple rather, cinnamon, marzipan, light nuts, sweet malt, a little lemon, a little metallic / alcoholic
    • Finish
Sweet malt, beautiful apple peel and astringent citrus notes on oak, nice, medium long

Has initially a soft nose, I still find the Port richt you out. Fruit, followed by butter, a little honey and some honeydew melon.
A tasteful mix of dark fruits and fruits, pepper and nuts. Very full and strong.
In the finish, the port after-maturity is clearly noticeable. Light, slowly fading fruit notes.
    Conclusion: strong, fruity, good!

    • Nose
It's mild and creamy on the nose, with (steamed) strawberry tinge in the distance. Exhales sweet, almost custard-y creaminess, red currants, yoghurt?/fruit smoothie, malted grain, some fine oak comes through. Pastry cream (cream cake?), apricots, peach preserves.
    • Taste
Being congruous to the nose, the palate's rather soft, caressing even, and yet sufficient enough to fill the whole mouth with warmth and ginger spice. Levelling out on soft fruit, like raspberries, wild strawberries - not overly expressive after all, but decent, yes, it's fine. Body is medium/light, pretty soft in texture, but proper complexity wise.
    • Finish
Medium long. Balanced all right. Takes off on dry vanilla, chocolate and hazelnuts, white oak. No slips or misses whatsoever.

  25. rottendon scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Although I think it's quite delicious, it's not exactly a masterpiece. The Portweineinfluss acts set, the flavors not natural.
    • Nose
Immediately intense sherry (?!?) This impression lasts exactly one breath, then results in a scary creamy nose, caramel, some vanilla and raspberries and strawberry yoghurt. The whole thing looks a bit artificial and artificial, the nose warms up. The port notes go back before returning more intensively than before. White wine, fruit chewy candy, yeast dough.
    • Taste
Very sweet, fruity start, before tart notes come to the back. Chocolate, cocoa, superficial again something artificial, pancake (Berliner) with forest fruit jam filling meets bourbon caramel and English fruit cake.
    • Finish
The finish is relatively long, begins sour, fruity, sweet, becomes increasingly bitter to the rear, without becoming too challenging. Acts here also a bit artificial.

What do you need to do when you’ve got ex-bourbon matured Scotch which needs a bit of a push? Stick it in a wine cask for a couple of months, which is just what Tomatin did here. The time (weeks? months?) in ex-Port casks added an additional layer of depth, sweetness and red fruits, resulting in a very pleasing, still light-ish and dangerously quaffable summery dram.

Quite a powerful nose. Big bunches of red berries and grapes. Vanilla, oak and hints of white pepper.
    • Taste
Dark chocolate dipped in strawberries. Crushed almonds, walnuts, Victoria sponge (with jam and cream in the middle) and a centre of oak.
    • Finish
      Fruity on the finish.

A soft and smooth nose with nectarines, peaches and mango. The palate is a bit wine-y, with black pepper on the arrival. Also chocolate and wood. The finish is long and warming.

    • Taste
Dry Wine, Chocolate raisins, Wood notes, Lots and lots of cooked fruit, cinnamon, cloves, spiced hot apple cider.
    • Finish
Long rich finish, more cooked fruit, some more oak dark and very bitter chocolate, rich coffee with milk.

A Tomatin that comes out of the box, nice and interesting ... if not totally convincing.
    • Nose
Sweet and sweet, port, tropical fruits, some dried fruits.

With water: the alcohol comes out a little more.
    • Taste
As a starter, drier than expected on the oak, a lot of fruity touches (melon of Cavaillon, pear). Very spicy (chilli, ginger), a hint of salt, hints of port, a little bitterness.

With water: a little freshly cut grass and more.
    • Finish
Medium and relatively dry, quite bitter.

Very tasty and sweet - the Porteinfluß is not so clear, but still brings a nice kick in the fruity-sweet Tomatin. A wonderful summer whisky! 46% - natural color - not cool filtered - what more could you want!
    • Nose
Very sweet !, red fruit compote, ripe papaya, some pepper and a light fresh alcoholic note, it takes some time then the alcohol goes back and the port notes (and indeed a hint of chocolate) are more prominent
    • Taste
Sparkling and at the same time sweet in the mouth, honey sweets, now slightly lighter fruits, the oak comes through discreetly, from the port is little to feel here
    • Finish
The finish is then bitter-sweet because the oak strikes first. However, the sweetness quickly regains the upper hand and leaves behind a nice touch of honey and aromas of a light Rotling wine.

  42. Greenkeeper scored this whisky 73 points Expert Senior

What a keen disappointment ! That one should be a replacement for the brilliant 15yo. Tomatin standard but what the f*ck*ng h*ll did they do at Tomatin's ?

Mature their good spirit in worn-out bourbon hogsheads and then finishing it in even sluggier cheap, very big, very old and stale port casks ? What a pity.

Refill wood spices and fluid alcohol stand out followed by very "shy" port notes.

Nose: Initially very sweet and alcoholic. That distinctly alcoholic note made me worry. Port influence only very lightly. Behind that alcoholic, artificial sweetness appear some tropical fruits, yes indeed that might be sugar-coated papyas, mangos or some other crap. No choc in the nose, no tannins in the nose. Besides, tannins and chocolate are rarely to be found in the nose.
Candied ? Well maybe, I'd rather call that "artificial sweetness". Depends on your individual feeling.

Palate: You have to overcome all the malty alcohol first, to reach your goal. A bit like D-day I think: Some thousands of the conoisseurs storming ahead won't reach the goal and drown in the alcoholic notes on the beach.
If you were lucky enough to survive the malty alcohol attack you'll be rewarded with some apricots and cold, stewed plums with a lil bit of milk choc.
No sherry, no cherries, no sultanas. Again lots of artificial sweetness while the alcohol reaches and disturbs the stomach.

Finish: Short at best. Gone before you could think about it. What a waste.  74 points is a good judgement in my eyes. Results might get better if half of the content of the bottle is filled into another empty bottle and the rest is kept for some months to let the oxygen do its work. In my eyes it's a demonstration how you could destroy a good spirit by using cheap, 3rd class casks. Tomatin stated that this was their first attempt to produce a port-cask matured whisky. You could taste that I think. Or maybe it was just that my expectations were too high.

Nose:  sweet nose for sure full of port influence: red fruit marmalade. Bits of white pepper. Chocolate. Candied papaya. Some tannins too. Rich candied and honeyed.

Palate: lots of fruit up front in honey syrup. Apricot. Plum. Cherry. Sultana plum jam with macadamia nuts on top. Milk chocolate. Sweet and lovely.

Finish. Plums and chocolate , sweet fortified wine and Cocoa.

If you've hot a sweet tooth this is your dram.
