Whisky Reviews for Glentauchers 2008 DT

9 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.81 points

  1. Drk Neknul scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

The 384 bottles were bottled for DT at the perfect time. Respect.
    • Nose
Dark chocolate, tobacco leaves and toffee are dominant.
    • Taste
Relatively few fruit aromas of sultanas and dried dates as well as the really extraordinary dark color suggest PX. In the past, I would have expected a rest of sherry in the barrel, so wonderfully Cask 900535 has formed the fire over just 59 months, but that would be inadmissible. The very intense sherry taste comes to light perfectly, while the alcohol elegantly fades into the background. Short maturation, over 55% Alc / Vol and no trace of spressing.
    • Finish
The relatively short maturation "saves" the notes, which are often very tart and bitter, reminiscent of old childhood cough syrups, the 1st-fill sherry bottlings, in the finish, sometimes seem a bit cumbersome and inaccessible to the taste.

Despite a complex nose, the youth can not be denied
    • Nose
Sherry with citrus fruits, red grapefruit, black tea with lemon, dark chocolate with oranges, some bitter almonds, nuts, herb meadow, a hint of smoke and spices
    • Taste
Sherry, oak, a hint of phenol and iodine, Almdudler lemonade, less complex in the mouth than in the nose
    • Finish
Sherry lingers on the palate and the Ricolabonbons

This is a very good whisky. Sweet, smooth, rich and full bodied. Quite
good drinkable considering its alcoholic strength. This one is not
hiding its youth but the sherry cask has done an amazing job. Certainly,
not a dram for the sherried cask lovers only.

    • Nose
Lots of sherry, yellow fruits, caramel, vanilla, almonds, and,
surprisingly, a hint of bubble-gum. Quite fresh, lateron hints of grassy
notes. Very smooth and gentle on the nose.
    • Taste
Sweet and strong. Red liquorice, sherry, toffee, some fruitiness,
followed by wine flavours (Madeira?) and hints of chocolate. The alcohol
is already integrated after this short time of maturation.
    • Finish
Long with lingering sherry and yellow fruity notes. Gets drier in the end with fine nutty flavours.

WITH WATER: Stays sweet but develops more cereal and malty notes. Hints of flavours you get while passing the wash backs.

My first smoked diver, and I have to say, something fierce but tasty.
    • Nose
The nose carefully maintained, a nose, pure alcohol and then glue. Without water, a note of apricot easily comes through, but nothing more. Let's try water. Fresh, much fresher, the chocolate is lighter, but the sherry is still in the nose. Plums and apples take turns.
    • Taste
Spicy with water, dark, ripe fruits, such as raisins and dates, as well as prunes and chocolate.
Without water, it becomes much sweeter and malty, towards milk chocolate and mown grass.
    • Finish
He is again friendly and easy and also in the mouth for a long time.

5 years! Five! A Sherrybomb, sweet, fruity and rich. Duncan Taylor, great idea of mixing a GD 15, GD 21 and a Glenfarclas 2000 (CS) pretending it will be a five year old youngster. Kudos! What a cask.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 9/10
    • Nose
Sherry! Coffee beans, cherry, plums, rasins, dark chocolate (Lindt Excellence 99%).
    • Taste
Cherry and sherry! Plums, dark fruits, currant, blackberry, dates, wood!
    • Finish
Long. Sweet berries, stewed fruit, wine gums.

With water the plastic in the nose disappears and the fruitiness is more emphasised, while the taste and the finish are totally dominated by chocolate and coffee beans, toffee and caramel. It settles down a lot and becomes more approachable to me.

This whisky reminds me of Glendronach Parliament a bit. Similar profile, similar colour, impressive considering it's just 5 years old.
    • Nose
Prunes, raisins, dark chocolate, coffee beans, cherries. This is followed by rubber as in tyres that spoils the nice impression to me.
    • Taste
Quite a complex palate for such a youngster. Loads of dark sherry notes, cherries, dates, cocoa, a touch of coconut. Not too sweet, not too dry.
    • Finish
Medium-length, dominated by dark fruit and wooden notes. Very pleasant.
