[November, 2018] I had this dram during a Jim McEwan tasting in Bonn and he claimed that the 17-years old Bowmore was and is one of his favourites (not stating how many favourites he owns in total)...

...and it is a somewhat chequered dram with a great old-stylish nose, a good palate but a rather weak mouthfeel and finish. Nonetheless, easy to sip and worth a try, for sure.
    • Nose
      90 90
The colour is deep gold and the nose offers a fine old style Traditional Scotch profile with tons of OBFs (delicious cheesy notes, not the sweaty ones) floating my olfactory cells beside the trademark fruity and peaty aromas - wow, this truly reminds me of some old standard (12-years) Bowmore releases of the seventies. Not too bad and I wonder if it is just this batch that smells that way or if this is a "White Sands" trademark nose. I certainly will check this again next year...
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste cannot keep up with the very fine nose but still it is a delicious fruity, honey and peaty profile that is nicely balanced. Unfortunately, it is not layered and the complexity is rather limited - but fortunately, it is tasty and quaffable. Water releases more aromas in the nose and flavours on the palate and it takes out most of the rather unpleasant plastics mouthfeel so I suggest to reduce this dram a little bit.
    • Finish
      84 84
The initial mouthfeel is warming and a little coating with a minor astringent feeling that I do not like (plastics). The finish is of medium length and adds no new impressions but the drying-astringent mouthfeel (plastics, metals) again. Too bad as the nose was great and the palate very good - this finish is rather sub-standard...
