For sure the fruitiest Bunna ever - of course you need to like it and I like it very much even so I would never bet that it's a Bunna. It reminds me very much on the series of great old Speysiders also from 1973 and about 40yo. It seems that 1973 was the year of fruity whiskies. Anyhow really excellent!

Extremely fruity, intense tropical fruits, bananas galore, mango, papaya, passion fruit, honey, creme brulee, other overripe fruits, hints of solvent, whiffs of oak wood - superb!
    • Taste
      95 95
Very oily, creamy, mellow, thick, sirupy, good sweetness, plenty of fruitiness, fine notes of oak wood, good level of acidity, very ripe fruits, lemons, spices, white pepper - fantastic!
    • Finish
      94 94
Long, warm, fruits everywhere, little bit more on grapefruits but still with good sweetness

Bomb of candied exotic fruits. A had of beautiful wood but the was has not taken over despite the 40 years.

    Yes there are fruits.
What I like is the herb infused oils that linger for 3-5 minutes after each tiny sip.
The hints of chartreuse, menthol, mint and tarragon.
    The fresh green asparagus.
The waxy mouth coating as the flavors fade only to beg another sip.
And then the fruits hit and....round and round to the finish that ends sadly long after that final sip as I sniff the glass begging the whisky genie to miraculously add another cl to enjoy.

Oozes pineapple, papaya, mango on the nose, with added peach and sour pink grapefruit and bitter aniseed just to offer some balance. So rich and dense with fruit on the palate, more of the papaya and the pineapple, so composed and integrated with the chalk and mineral notes, that never disturb and just quieti complement. A layer of butterscotch arrives on the finish, along with some black pepper. What a dram, complex and elegant, sweet while never too sweet, offering both rich fruit and mineral balance.

Vanilla pineapple custard coconut, reminds me of a tropical fruit tart, really enjoyable maybe a tad too sweet

    • Nose
Ripe fruit, pineapple, notes of cognac, this nose initially gives off a great freshness. It evolves slowly but surely towards more creamy notes.
With a few drops of water, a superb balance is formed between the fruity notes on the one hand and the toffee on the other hand. The whole is very fragrant.
    • Taste
Very nice with spices, woody notes and a texture reminiscent of peach syrup.
    • Finish
Clove, cinnamon, the finish is very smooth, but also drying on its great length. Dry herbs.
With water, less tannic, giving pride of place to the fruits and the length becomes quite exceptional!

      Enthusiasm
      Nose 4/5, 5/5 with water
      Mouth, 4/5
      Final, 4/5, 5/5 with water.

I had this at TWE O&R show and just had to take a little more home to re-savour. I scored it 90 points at the time.

N: Its one of those ‘aah’ drams, perfectly-sweet & creamy, served with a supreme fruit salad [strawberries, apples, melons, papaya,…], custard creams and pastries galore - all of it waxed-up like apples & pears prepared for a Green Grocer display. Add a few herbs [marjoram, spearmint perhaps], sweet dandelion & burdock, other floral fragrant delights, ginger beer, sweet prune juice, dates,… you get the picture. In short, a heavenly aromatic/fragrant, tropical fruit-basket>herbal candle.
T: I didnt take this home for ‘under-the-microscope’ scrutiny, i simply wanted to enjoy more of its 'super-happy place'.
F: Aside from the [tropical] elixir-sweet fruit basket, theres a key counter note of bitter-sour dunnage & sweet-bitter mandarin citrus running underneath - one which naturally belies this malts true grand age.
C: And what of age, and score for that matter? - just a number, that's what. Joy in a glass right here, a fine way to celebrate life [starting] at 40.

This was bottled by four Flemish friends to celebrate their 40th birthday’s, two of which were manning the Whiskyman stand at the Old & Rare weekend in Glasgow. With only 155 bottles in total split between them, it’s a treat to be trying this - not least because 2013 was also my 40th year and Bunnahabhain remains one of my heart distilleries.

N: Papaya & mango alongside a myriad of other waxed fruits & flora and then all the bananas - especially those small sweet ones you get in abundance down in Trivandrum.

T: There’s more tropical-ness embodied in a succulent saline<waxy<nectar mix, creating an intoxicating palate and moorish mouthfeel. I love this, it’s right up my street.

F: It keeps on exuding it’s elixir - 40yo yet forever young.

C: Thanks Billy, a real treat. And that’s close on day 1. Full report: WLP

Having some water with it this time.

With a few drops of water there is even more fizz and its creamy and fruity with it.

The main thing is the bitterness has completely gone and its quite thick now.

Yeah this is a great old Bunna.

My score goes up to 92p.

Bottled maybe slightly a year or two too late but that's being picky, this is an excellent aged Bunna.
    • Nose
Wet grass, hay, lime, cream & jam sponge, mango, peach and hints of orange marmalade.
    • Taste
Very fizzy on the tongue and there are some ham notes with a slight bitterness from the wood which is expected at this age. Hints of brine.

Cold sweet tea, lemon, hints of menthol
    • Finish
Good medium length, getting sweeter with the fruit taking its time to come through

    Simply excellent
    • Nose
Smells a bit young and grassy at first, but quickly gets fruitier (ripe summer fruits) with a mineral side that adds depthness.
    • Taste
Tastes old, yet very fruity, still with this mineral side that makes it very enjoyable
    • Finish
Rather long, on the same profile.

A briljant dram. The winner (for me) in a line up during a Bunna tasting on the 7th of November 2015.
    • Nose
Sweet, very exotic, fruity (pineapple), lime, vanilla
    • Taste
Light sweet, some exotic fruit, drying (oaky)
    • Finish
Warm, gentle, woordspices, spiced fruit and lingering

    very drinkable
    • Nose
Lots of tropical fruits. Most of all Bananas then mango, pineapple, papaya and dragonfruit
    • Taste
Sweet, peppery, woody, lemon peel, apricots in the background
    • Finish
no real change compared to taste, it just continues

  20. markjedi1 scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

    Dangerously quaffable
Bunna, that lingers quite long. Great selection.
    • Nose
      Ka-boom! This nose is
bull’s eye! Überfruity (is that a word?) on melon, mango, pineapple, banana –
lots of banana in fact – kiwi and papaya. I am on a tropical island! It is
quite waxy, I have to emphasize. Polished parquet, honey, yellow potpourri,
beeswax. In all the way in the back a hint of the sea and a soft trace of
woodsmoke appears. This is absolutely wonderful.
    • Taste
      It is quite creamy
and fruity on the palate. Banana in the lead (both ripe and green), followed by
all the other tropical fruit. Thanks to the wood, it does become quite piquant.
Pepper and ginger, mostly. If there was something like salted honey… this is it!
Midpalate I get some lemon zest and marzipan. Nice balance. This is stunning.
      It makes me completely bananas!
    • Finish
      Only in the long,
sweet finish does the oak rear its head again, leaving the mouth dry. The this
      party is long from over.

Lovely whisky, but I can't get past the bananas. Others taste a lot of tropical fruit, but I get just bananas, tons of them, including some green ones right at the end. I have a lot of the sample left, and I will leave it longer for the rest to see if more fruits develop. For now - very good, but a little monodimensional and not outstanding.
