Another great Glendronach from 1993, the year, when SC bottlings of Glendronach should have been distilled. Great tobacco, leather and chocolate espresso mix, quite complex.

Raspberries and blackberries on the nose with rich honeys, aniseed, wood polish, leather and vanilla cream. Warm honey on the palate with banana bread, cinnamon and salted dark chocolate. Soft eucalyptus smoke creeping in on the finish without ever overpowering, remaining on forest fruits, citrus honey and leather. A dense and powerful dram which manages to remain nimble and elegant. A real Rolls Royce of a whisky.

  5. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

    nose:
intense sherry on red and black fruits, on soaked raisins, on candied apple, on prune, humidified oak, cold tobacco, pronounced peppery spices, caramel syrup
return of dry glue, eucalyptus, vanilla, old leather, a winey side on wine vinegar
    mouth:
it causes on wood, leather, macerated fruits, black is the order of the day, it's a little oily, a little bitterness on almonds, a little crushed nuts, debris to dust, chocolate black, coffee, and finally concentrated black coffee extract; the pastry and peppery spices tumble suddenly with the degree of alcohol, it stings a little, the sulfur
fruits on the candied date, fig, prune, raisin, dust on the skin of the date, dark chocolate, a little toasted liquorice that goes with it
a candy of zan sweetened with caramel, the strong coffee that remains on the tongue
    final:
sherry, dry varnish, gripping oak, macerated cooked fruit, cooked vanilla limit burnt with the candied stick, the strong toasted back make for a very nice and long finish.

Absolute top single cask and one of the reasons for the good reputation of GlenDronach. In my opinion, the quality of today's bottlings has declined significantly and is no longer at the level of the 93 from January 15th. Profile is very similar to the Cask 35. Despite the strength of the alcohol, it can be consumed without any problems. Wonderfully complex and noble without a missing note!

Glendronach? Blindly I leaned for Kavalan a moment so we were more on punchy fruit than on the big roundness of sherry. The most Asian of Glendronach then! ;-)
    Enthusiasm 4/5 Whisky n ° 1658
    • Nose
A little solvent initially, then notes of sherry or red wine. Freshness Somewhat woody. Coffee and chocolate. Some aromatic herbs.
    • Taste
Generous fruit, vaguely exotic at times, very juicy in the mouth.
    • Finish
      Well spiced.

A very nice Sherry ... Glendronach is really an expert in this area, no complaints. (Anniv evening of 03/03/18)
    • Nose
Big Sherry with all that characterizes it as sulfur and red berries. A real Winey side.
    • Taste
Very nice balance. Light attack but very dry. A glendro very Sherry but keeps a beautiful finesse. Sulfur and red fruits present.
    • Finish
Nice length on Sherry, coffee and spices. There is also vanilla and this little vinous Sherryiesque :)

    Just perfect.
    • Nose
Dark notes of nutty oloroso sherry descend from the glass into the nose. Roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, meaty malt, oxidising grape, but also red fruit and orange.
    • Taste
It's thick and chewy, but pleasantly drying on lots of spices such as pepper, clove, and cardamom. Next to that, there is this typical meaty, nutty and dark oloroso, along with red fruit, dark chocolate, coffee, and marzipan.
    • Finish
Long and lingering, with warming cinnamon and cardamom, clove, coffee roast, marzipan and hazelnut, and stewed plum and orange marmalade.

Another very good single cask bottling by Glendronach.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10
    • Nose
Sherry, dark fruits, a bunch of plums, plum marmalade, nuts, juicy overripe oranges, raisins, old leather, hits of tobacco.
    • Taste
Sherry, spicy, fruits, leather, cherry, oak, chocolate, oranges.
    • Finish
Long. Dark fruits, dark chocolate, tobacco.

  22. ctu scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Brutal good maturing, very complex, multi layered oloroso.
My best from Glendronach (up to now).
    • Nose
Matured oloroso, fruits: apple, orange, plum and date, raisin, marzipan, cinnamon, leather, tobacco, herbals, mint,
coffee, chocolate, wood, sawdust and motor oil
    • Taste
Rich, creamy, sweet, spicy, fruity: cherry, date and fig,
spices: pepper, ginger and clove, sweet oloroso and bitter orange peel, coffee, marzipan, nut and almond
    • Finish
Long, bittersweet, spicy: burned sugar, tobacco and dried fruits

  23. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A full-bodied traditional sherried character. Multilayered, perfectly
balanced with depth and complexity. Tremendously creamy, spicy, sweet
with lots of dried dark fruits and chocolate aroma, followed by a long
and nutty aftertaste. GlenDronach spirit and Oloroso sherry - a
fantastic example of a perfect symbiosis! This is whisky making in total
perfection! If I had to choose only one bottle of GlenDronach from the
fabulous year 1993, it would be cask #33 - NO DOUBT!

    https://www.facebook.com/Whisky-Connaisseur-550443305109776/
    • Nose
Big and rich sherried nose with deep aromas of prunes, dates, raisins
and sticky treacle. Delicate flavours of marzipan, luscious oranges and
cinnamon emerge, accompanied by a whiff of leather (horse saddle),
tobacco leaves, tender herbal notes, earl grey tea and a whiff of pencil
shavings in the back. An absolutely gorgeous nose!
    • Taste
Oh boy - this is rich, intense, sweet and creamy! Raisins, dates and
figs nicely mingle with lots of Demerara sugar on the palate. This is
immediately followed by a warming and lovely spiciness of pepper, cloves
and some ginger. Fine notes of marzipan arrive, lingering with subtle
bitter orange peel, dark chocolate, espresso and tender almonds and
walnuts towards the finish. Very accessible and perfectly balanced.
      Simply perfect!
    • Finish
A very long, sweet and spiced finish with Demerara sugar, marzipan and
delicate cinnamon. Slightly bitter notes of oranges, expresso beans,
almonds and walnuts deliciously mingle towards the end. Stunning!

WITH WATER: A few drops of water slightly enhance the fruity and creamy
character of this beauty on the nose. Subtle notes of flint stone and a
few more herbs are added to this gorgeous nose. Sweet, creamy and less
spicy on the palate with herbal tea, blackcurrant, marzipan, raisins and
delicate walnuts. The finish is long, creamy, sticky sweet with
oranges, cacao and lovely walnut flavours.

This one really shows why 1993 is considered to be a stellar year for Glendronach!
    • Nose
The definition of dark sherry bomb! Tons of dark chocolate, molasses, coffee, mocca, leather. Pronounced wood, but not overly loud. The fruity side is a bit masked here, but it's very good!
    • Taste
More of the nose plus tons of spices, cardamon, ginger, cinnamon, some almonds, nuts and dried fruits showing up.
    • Finish
Very long, but also quite drying and bitterish. Wood notes spoil the overall great impression a bit.

Nose: An atomic bomb, sherry style! This is big stuff alright, with spicy, flinty, fruity and big. quite a lot of spices (pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon) you want it, you got it. Red fruit, and some sultana and date, in addition to balsamic and pepper. Like Like Like!

Palate: Big palate if there ever was one (why did I not pick a higher abv!!!) dried fruit galore, spices in tons, coffee, pepper, chilly. Sherry Colossus.

Finish: Bitter chocolate, spices, dried fruit.

Superb. I think i’d rate it higher than I did back then.

This is very, very good sherried whisky.
    • Nose
Some smoke and maybe charcoal. Super dark sherry. Shoe polish and damp wood. Some spices, cloves and coriander. Then soy rears its head, as well as cocoa and dark chocolate. With water the sweeter notes appear, and also some dates and figs. Phew, I love this!
    • Taste
A hint of smoke, some black pepper. The nose had some sweeter notes but I struggle to find them on the palate. Leather maybe. Spicy with mint and aniseed. Smooth and creamy, highly drinkable.
    • Finish
Tobacco, raisins, cinnamon and maple syrup. Not as long as I would've liked, but long enough.

  31. turfsmurf scored this whisky 88 points Expert Junior

Notes based on a blind sample. This dram is very strong and daunting at first, and takes a while to get used to it. It's worth the wait because more layers are revealed with time and a splash of water. It's a mood dram, or, you have to be in the mood for a big sherry hit.
    • Nose
Sharp and sherried. After a few sips and getting used to the strength the nose calms down a bit and reveals notes of molasses and baked apples.
    • Taste
Very spicy and bold. The sherry explodes on the palate. Slightly bitter, licorice root sweetness (which is enhanced with a splash of water) and a bit of a struck match and beef stock. After a while the tastes becomes fresher with hints of pine forest.
    • Finish
A long sweet, spiced and sherried finish. Muscovado sugar and cinnamon buns. Becomes sweeter and creamy with more than a few drops of water.

We are indeed in the presence of a killing. The beast is released.
    • Nose
Balsamic vinegar, balsamic cream. Nice juicy sherry, clean. It smells exceptional around here! Scents of marzipan, gingerbread, brioche. Wine vinegar, raisins, wood, leather, tobacco, infused black tea, cloves, licorice
    • Taste
The woody is powerful, there are nuts, dried fruits, dates, black tobacco, an acidulated tip. Old moist boxes, candied orange, yeast, brown sugar, milk chocolate. Fruit compote. The development is complex and far beyond what I can define with words. It's long, balanced. Guaranteed thrills!
    • Finish
The finish is woody and accompanied by an acetic / balsamic return. Several successive waves of cereals and malt round the corners.

Well, this is just simply the best GlenDronach I’ve ever tried. What a whisky!
    • Nose
Neat: dates, raisins and figs in a sweet syrup-mix. Far in the back there’s a little flower note, maybe roses? Some cacao butter as well. And cappuccino!

With water: In some strange way, the water kind of closed of all these wonderful elements with a more mineraly and smoky side. Everything else is still there, just hidden away. After a while the smoke combines with the fruit, reminding me of some Riojas! Sexy!
    • Taste
Neat: Oooh, the balance. Oloroso sherry and raisins in a perfect mix! Woho! Despite the high strength, this whisky feels very accessible, very easily enjoyed. There’s so much character in this malt. Some black berries, some nuts and not overly sweet.

With water: I didn’t think water could make this whisky better, but shame on me. Every note becomes stronger, clearer and just falls into place. It’s dry and sweet, characterful and steady!
    • Finish
Neat: Ooh yes. Classic, long and very balanced. Not overly sweet, no unpleasant wood soury notes. It’s just so clean in the way it’s presented? There a little smoky note, like roasted hazelnuts.

With water: About the same really, but in this case, the same is a really, really good thing. Maybe a little less smoke.

amber color, nose very marked by sherry, balsamic vinegar, a hint of varnish, chocolate, coffee, red and black fruits, spices. Mouth not too powerful for 59%, well integrated alcohol, quite dry but a little less than the C # 5, texture slightly thicker, very marked by chocolate, exotic wood (which reminds me of a certain Skeldon 1973), spices (ginger , cloves), fruits cooked in the bottom and some tobacco. Very good length. A perfect Glendro for sherry lovers monsters.

    Tasting Notes from Whiskyfun.com (April 28, 2014):

    Colour: mahogany.

Nose: yes! This time we’re all on great Armagnac, with prunes, raisins, only a faint oaky side (pencil shavings) and then smaller notes, earl grey tea, chocolate, cappuccino, maduro cigars… It’s a great nose! With water: more of all that, with a mineral side, flints, a very great mustiness in the background...

Mouth (neat): yes it’s perfect. Rich yet vibrant, not that sweetish, very chocolaty, with a lovely spiciness between cloves and pepper, some gingerbread, some chestnut honey and touches of bitter oranges. What’s not to like? Ultra-classic sherry monster. With water: what a great swimmer! A lot of herbal teas, blackcurrant buds, blackberries…

Finish: long and, dare I write, very ganache-y. I know, I know.

Comments: ultra-classic indeed. As long as some keep making these – whatever the way they make them - not everything is lost.

    SGP:561 - 90 points.

Nose: Very powerful and alcoholic - turpentine, paste, glue, gum and oranges. In addition very spicy wood with tobacco, mocha as well as green, immature notes and eucalyptus sweets.
Taste: Powerful and creamy with lots of honey, heavy dark jam, tobacco, soft leather and orange liqueur. Very long-lasting, slightly astringent with aromas of dark chocolate and almonds - absolutely top.
Finish: Long and tart! The finish is even somewhat "watered down" compared to the bombastic taste. Smoky coffee beans and chocolate notes with still slightly sweet honey remain on the palate.

  44. KayMeertens scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

Impressive. I've tried eight different '93 GlenDronachs and they are all great, but this is the most intense one. 91/92.
    • Nose
A very mature, extremely heavily sherried nose. Prune, date, raisin, leather, mocha, dark cherry, tobacco, almond paste, red apple, spicy oak, herb candy (Ricola), hazelnut, cinnamon, eucalyptus, dark chocolate, apple syrup, orange, vanilla and smoke. The only less pleasant notes are those of glue and peppermint chewing gum, which take a moment to wear off. When those are gone they are replaced by some liquorice.
    • Taste
Prune, date, dark, cherry, bramble, raspberry, almond liquor, pepper and marshmallow. A slightly lighter fruitiness than the nose, even though it's still heavy and treacly. Again a little mint as well. With water, the mocha, dark chocolate and even a little meatiness kick in.
    • Finish
The mocha, dark chocolate and liquorice strike back. But there's also still the prunes and cherries, plus a touch of hazelnut and a whiff of smoke. Extremely long, sticks with you until the next morning.

  45. Bishlouk scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

A bomb of gluttony! I am generally put off by the presence of too much wood in the single casks Oloroso Glendronach, but here it is perfectly dosed (discreet, even). And with a small piece of dark chocolate on the side, it becomes divine ...
    • Nose
A very powerful and very addictive ultra sherry nose. An explosion of spices, black plum, dry tea, baked cherry, toasted hazelnut, a hint of old leather, and melted brown sugar. Subsequently notes of mocha and chocolate develop.
    • Taste
Hard to describe, but almost orgasmic! Alcohol is perfectly integrated and never harms despite its almost 60%. It's just perfect. Warm gingerbread, toasted cocoa beans, cooked red and black fruits, black tea.
    • Finish
Long and hot finale. A hint of wood slightly dry the bottom of the throat, but nothing invasive. The spices permeate the cheeks and then spread to the palate.

    From Abbeywhisky.com :

    GlenDronach Cask #33 Tasting Notes

The nose is luscious, lovely stewed prunes and sweet plum syrup hold
fantastic depths of gentle clove, cinnamon and rich orange marmalade.

The palate, a full-bodied traditional sherried character that gives
tremendous waves of sun dried raisins, dates and spiced plums. Richly
roasted coffee beans with touches of almond and walnut add a depth and complexity to the long, robust finish. The perfect winter warmer.
