    Rum Garioch

While Erik Molenaar steadily continues to distill his own spirits at his Wagging Finger distillery, his company Kintra still bottles whisky and rum. This is a Glen Garioch that he released a couple of years ago, but of which I only just now was able to secure a sample.

Ooh, this is a very aromatic nose full of banana, papaya, melon, demerara sugar, tiger balm, Cointreau, cigar box and mint. There is so much going on here. But truth be told: if offered blind I would have taken this for a good rum!

While the body is light, the taste is just fine. Very fruity with a hessian note. Pink grapefruit, apricots, sultanas, honey and some balsamico. Baking butter. Surprisingly spicy, in fact. Lots of ginger, liquorice and cloves. Oranges, let’s not forget those! And a lovely trace of woodsmoke. This is very good!

The finish is pretty long, sweet and spicy at the same time and offers up a rummy finale. Told you!

Wow! A grand Glen Garioch. Unfortunately nowhere to be found now. Thx for sharing, Manny!

A very good IB Glen Garioch, well worth buying.
    • Nose
Butterscotch, toffee, buttered toast, a little coffee a touch of orange.

      Certainly smells sweet.
    • Taste
A touch thin on caramel, vinegar, cooked meats, faint orange and a little bitterness

Give it a little time because it develops nicely and the caramel and butter notes come through and the palate feels more substantial now.
    • Finish
Quite long on sweet caramel with a touch of salt, still faint hints of orange.

Ruben, Whiskynotes:Nose: sweet and rummy, with some banana /
Pisang notes. Papaya, melon, red fruit gums. Mount Gayrioch? Garioch
Club? A nicely candied sherry influence anyway. But there’s more:
eucalyptus and mint, some exotic woods, cigar boxes. And a very light
coastal kick. Mouth: again surprisingly fruity. Juicy pears, fig syrup,
some pink grapefruit and apricot jam. Lots of yellow raisins. Then a
wave of spices from the oak: ginger, mint, cloves. Heather honey. Even a
wee touch of smoke in the background. Finish: long, sweet and spicy
    with a resinous finale.
It’s surprising to come across a Glen Garioch that’s so Caribbean in a
way. Very entertaining and easily drinkable, recommended.

Nose: A certain metallic and phenolic with damp oak and coconut. Balsamic vinegar. Pepper and lots of spice. Dusty.

Palate: Peppery and alcoholic on entry. Sherry and wee hints of smoke. Or am I dreaming? Again some sulphur.

Finish: sherry and cigar leaves Sugar and dried fruit.

A funky dram this one is, and with the wide variation of the single casks, it’s plainly impossible to guess a distillery (by chance maybe) If you have not had this bottle (I bet a few Dutch participating and scoring 100 points, have).

The nose needs a lot of time and a dilution to express itself, chocolate, a little smoke and wax cover plum, honey, almond and coconut milk. Tannic attack, wax and honey arrive at the same time as too much wood. Bitterness a little green in the final. Right, too woody, not my profile.

  9. p4blo scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

An enjoyable dram, although the sherry influence is not big here.
    • Nose
A layer of smoke covers strawberry jam, bananas, mango and roasted coffee.
    • Taste
Very sweet with vanilla, oranges, apricots, chocolate and mint.
    • Finish
Initially sweet, then dominated by the smoke. Quite long.

  10. Defeatless scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Nose: Sweet and sour fruitiness. Italian herb mixture. It has many layers indeed, hint of chocolate and liqouris, some vanilla and toffee.

Initial taste: Sweet, complex, citrus, old bookshelf, chocolate milk, malt, and cream.

    Body: thick and meaty

Finish: medium-long: the citrus part keeps coming up

Price: Well it's a decent price for a decent whisky, but I would have spend my money different.

Presentation: Well as always with Kintra: very good.

Nicely balanced, could use a little bit more flavor on the palate, but a very good whisky nonetheless.
    • Nose
Ah yes, there that lovely whisky warehouse smell. Anyone who has ever been in one knows what I'm talking about. There is a subtle sherry influence (most likely refill), but also some licorice and salt as well as some herbs. It is a lovely light, fresh and balanced nose.
    • Taste
More licorice and also wood spices and vanilla. Mint, aniseed an white pepper all make an appearance. Not a lot left of the sherry here. Maybe a little bit of citrus.
    • Finish
Sugar, light caramel and a faint fruity aspect (pear). Medium to long.

Notes based on a blind sample. Quite unlike your average malt whisky, but interesting in a good way. There's a lot to discover in the smell and taste with a bit of smoke as well. I like it a lot, but be careful with water.
    • Nose
Very herbal: basil, dill, conifer. The sherry is present with notes of balsamic vinegar, cherry compote and brown rock sugar. After a while it becomes a bit medicinal and smoky.
    • Taste
Cigar box, tobacco, a whiff of smoke. Oily and warming. With a drop of water astringent and woody.
    • Finish
Still herbal, but those notes are joined by a bit of eucalyptus and black cardamom. The smokiness becomes more apparent and is nicely balanced by wood spices.

    • Finish
      Fudge, chocolate, mint and orange,

    Very complex and very pleasant.
    • Nose
Discreet at first, sherry, ripe plums, banana, vegetal notes, some honey and spices.

With water: more pastry (pastry not cooked enough) and sweet.
    • Taste
A lot of pepper overlooking the sherry, fruits (banana, plums, cherries, green apple), some spices, herbs cut, a lot of bitterness in the middle of the mouth, a touch of vanilla.

With water: more fruity, milk chocolate.
    • Finish
Long, bitter and spicy, a little oak.

  19. Bishlouk scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A really great nose that you want to smell for hours, but the mouth and the finish are less extravagant.
A malt nevertheless very complex, not crushed by sherry, and out of the ordinary.
However, it lacks a little "something" (some chills?) To make it reach 90.
    • Nose
Nose first wise and erased, it develops quickly in power on bread well cooked, heather, dry grass and a very slight smoke.
Behind all this lies creme brulee and gingerbread.
A nose to go for because it is not easily tamed.
    • Taste
The mouth is initially difficult to analyze as it is round and melted. It is not allowed to be done at first!
Many pepper spices that first explode before quickly calm down. Green fruits and cooked citrus notes of acid. Some hulls come and go from time to time, as well as sweet black tea.
    • Finish
Final quite short. A slight woody dryness that disappears quickly to give way to exotic soft spices that stick to the tongue.

  20. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    really complex and full whisky
compared with Glen Garioch Virgin Oak
    • Nose
tea, dry sherry, oily, nuts, floral - roses, caramel, syrup, some sulphur, pepper, honey and apples
    • Taste
iron, pastry, vanilla, strong spices, even some ashes, tastes rather old, complex and dusty
    • Finish
full with fudge, syrup, citrus - lemon and again lots of spices

  21. Jean-Brice scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    Very atypical and expressive.
    I really like
    • Nose
      Cherry with brandy, kirsh, ...
      With water, banana, spices, chlorophyll
      Exuberant and very expressive
    • Taste
      Mouth in the contiuity
    • Finish
      Long

  22. KayMeertens scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

The spicy kind of sherry, not standard at all. Whether you like this or not, there's no denying that this one has a lot of character and that there's a lot to be discovered in it.
    • Nose
Toffee, nutmeg, pine tree, cherry, tree resin, pear, peppermint, clove, raisin, honey, vanilla, tobacco, cigar boxes, marzipan, malt, blueberry, cinnamon, banana and a little smoke. A little glue as well.
    • Taste
Pepper, nutmeg, toffee, prune, raisin, cherry, clove, orange, tobacco, oak, chocolate, honey, bitter almonds, vanilla and eucalyptus. A musty touch as well. With water, the spice is turned down a bit in favour of more sherry sweetness.
    • Finish
Warming with toffee, tobacco, cigar boxes, plum, date, nutmeg, mocha, eucalyptus and a whiff of smoke.
