    Aromatic

Sansibar is a German independent bottler, run by Jens Drewitz. They only recently got on my radar when visiting the Whisky Festival for Independent Bottlers in Alost, Belgium. What did you expect? They have not yet bottled an Auchentoshan after all. Just kidding. Their range consists of some nice single casks at cask strength. I am trying their 16 Year Old Mortlach from 1997, which was released two years ago. It is very pale, suggesting a bourbon cask.

The nose is very aromatic on all kinds of white and yellow fruit. Think apples, gooseberries, but also some banana. A hint of coconut and some vanilla. Sugared orange peel. A twig of mint. This is fresh and lively, lacking the typical meaty side of Mortlach.

It is oily and fruity on the palate. A bit of pepper. The fruit translates into apples and gooseberries again, but also some oranges. There is a salty streak throughout. Some salty liquorice maybe. A bit zesty. Midpalate it turns quite herbal. Green tea? Some nuts and woodsmoke. Pleasantly warming.

The finish is medium long, in which the green herbs and nuts reappear.

Not bad at all, but I would not have guessed this was a Mortlach had I taste dit blend. Having said that, Mortlach can be so versatily that it is hard to recognize blind in any case.
