Whisky Reviews for Laphroaig 10-year-old

8 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.42 points

  1. hs305 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    [May, 2003]  I had this dram during an "Old 10 Years" tasting at Bonn-Mehlem.  In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this dram 85.  The first bottle served was corky but had a more interesting nose (besides the cork) on tropical fruits (mangos, passion fruits, guava) than the substitute bottle.  The colour is old gold with a rather light oily texture (the first bottle was more oily).  The nose is rather one-dimensional on a strong banana-driven profile as is the body.  I never had this before with a Laphroaig...

    25 years ago the Laphy 10 was my first single malt.

    As they say; you'll love it or hate it!

    I loved it then, still do today.

    So much said, it's lost some of it's edge over those years.

    … again 85/86 points.

    This bottle (L01887) was filled about 1999.

    At these times this 10 yo Laphroaig was more rich than nowadays.

    It's a good and basic Islay Whisky with its own charming character. Everybody should have tasted this one!

    Tasting with FineSpirits_butler1 on 2014.12.21. -

    we has the last sips from this old bottle ...
    • Nose
      fresh fruits, apples, pickled quinces, slightly sour stewed apples, small green seedless grapes, lychee, salt, peat, wood, peppery, wet rocks, cucumber salad with cumin, slightly charred wood, slightly run-down attic, sea air, little splash of lemon, used blackboard eraser, fresh, pumice, memory of chocolate, tracks of roasted caramel, old champagne
    • Taste
      smoky spiciness, bright fruitiness (some), peat, wet run-down attic, a bit oily, phenolic medicinal, some citrus, wood, suede spray, green banana peal, some pepper, burnt toast, salt water, lychee
    • Finish
      something charred, smoke, truffle, tart cocoa powder, echo from apples, peat, slight fruit sweetness, sweet couverture, smoked bacon, firecracker, rubber, peach peal, old champaign

    88P for the one with Barcode 87365 on the main label!

    Cinzano Torino

    Huge atmosphere, distinctive character:

    at certain times, moods and occasions there may be no other single malt but this one to drink.

    Not really complex, not very oaky (but some), a lot of peat smoke (typical Laphroaig flavor) and little fruit - but this is about the whole thing; this whisky is a great reminder of that matter!

    I bought it about 1997, when the price was as low as the actual version.

    When tasted the new version I'll add a note that compares the two versions.

    In every case a special colour of Single Malt -

    worth to have a bottle!

    At first mild, then spicy;

    looks fresh and light;

    something warm; pleasant.
    • Nose
      Peat, smoke, salt, sea air, fruit sweetness, apples?, medical, watermelon shell, bacon, some wood, sage, patches, cold coal ash, memory of Azuki beans
    • Taste
      Melons' sweetness, wood, soft and slightly oily, salty, bacon, peat, smoke, coal ash, herbs, rubber;

      after several sips a little fire, and coffee grounds
    • Finish
      Sweetness of apples and citrus, grass / hay, peat smoke, some wood, white cabbage, damp moss, memory of coniferous forest after summer rain, a little leather?
