    I don't like sulfur so it's hard.
    Quite simple and too monolithic.
    • Nose
      Sulfur nose. Burnt amulet.
Dried fruits, leather. Candied cherry. Prunes.
    • Taste
In the mouth plastic, sulfur, pencil, red fruits.
    • Finish
Final on leather, red fruits. The best of the dram.

First nose evoking cooked wine and prune growing on caramelized almonds. Later, chocolate frangipane. Sulfur, which becomes quite invasive. In the mouth, we find chocolate, but it hits hard alcohol level. A little "rough", lack of fullness. With water, it is already something else. On the nose hot chocolate with a hint of milk. The mouth is less aggressive and we return wooded in the final of the most beautiful effect! Well, but I admit, I cheated, I finished the drink while enjoying a salted caramel ice cream cone. A big moment ! The cold of ice, contrasted with the warm side of whisky, accentuating the greediness of sherry. Superb!

    Enthusiasm 4/5

A very well balanced whisky. Needs air to develop its full potpourri of flavours. Rich and fruity with pleasant elegance.

    • Nose
Starts earthy with damp wood and big sherry aroma. Burnt match, followed
by plenty of stewed ripe fruits. Some oak spice plus cinnamon.
    • Taste
Quite intense sherry tones. Big crimson sweet cherries covered with dark
chocolate (you know these mon chéri pralines), fruit compote, followed
by bitter chocolate and spicy oak are the result of an oily and rich
      palate.
    • Finish
Long, warm and sweet with liquorice. Fruity and damp earthy tones. Gets dry with oak spice.

WITH WATER: Oh yes, increased vibrancy! Water tames the alcohol with
more chocolate coated cherries coming through and lingering fruity
      sweetness.

    Tasting Notes by WhiskyNotes.be (Sept 01, 2014):

Nose: deep, fruity sherry. Recurrant, blackberry jam, plum compote. Rum & raisins. Some oak varnish and leather. Chocolate chips. Nutmeg and cinnamon. After a while also a faint hint of matchsticks.

Mouth: intense sherry again, with an oaky blast, dark fruit tea and liquorice. Balsamic syrup. Chocolate. Brighter notes of oranges and cinnamon buns as well. Enough jammy fruits to balance the darker, bitter side.

Finish: long, bittersweet with spicy notes and forest fruits.Comments: This is a true sherry bomb, a Karuizawa version of Ben Nevis. Quite massive. It could have been from a dozen other distilleries, but it’s a big dram nonetheless. Around € 80.

    Score: 86/100.

What a beautiful color - Old oak! ... 18/04/2014 - Very nice surprise at the opening of the bottle with friends: I found plum a little ash and a nice length in the mouth. A good big sherry. 88/100 for the moment, to review after aeration ... 20/04/2014 - Already a little rounded, to see again in some time ... 01/05/2014 - Still needs a lot of airing after which a little vinous side (balsamic?) That I do not like at first nose, disappears ... Nose: a little old plum, sweet fruit syrup and slightly sweet, slightly tart sweet, hulls of almonds and toasted hazelnuts or praline, a little ash or dust and leather. Palate: rather soft texture, always old plum with on the tip of the tongue of fruity acidulous candy and a pleasantly camphorated / mentholated rear-mouth / retro-olfaction on the finish slightly more wooded, barely liquorice (infusion) , almost without astringency or adhesion. Then the mouth is lined with sweet orange and warm confection and dark chocolate. 89/100 Clearly not a PX despite some sweet touches. I think that still a little time and aeration will allow me to reevaluate this beautiful Ben Nevis still on the rise ...

A big sherry bomb, packed with flavours. Great experience.

    90/100
    • Nose
Clean but big and slightly dirty (is that possible?) This is a big, huge sherry bomb, big bold flavours coming through... I love it! Big sherry notes, smoked parma ham, ginger, cloves, chocolate and orange with a hint of fresh mint, rubber notes, burnt match sticks, tobacco, boot polish, lovely dark molasses. Reminds me of PE back at School, gym shoes (plimsolls).
    • Taste
Big and bold, bitter orange, an abundance of winter spice, cloves cinnamon & nutmeg. Dark chocolate orange, leather, hints of menthol, smoked meat, rubber and dark sugar.
    • Finish
Clean and long. A touch of berry.
