It's really salty, but fortunately it has a milky taste. After adding a little water, the level of different flavors becomes obvious. Genting of medium quality is just too salty for me to suppress other flavors.
    • Nose
Sea salt, fat, wheat aroma, alcohol, cream flowers, salty oil tofu, grass.
    • Taste
Salty cream, bitter taste, citrus peel.
    • Finish
      Long, salty malt.

    2017-05-31:
Strict, as if chopped with an ax, strange whisky.
    • Nose
      82 82
Greens, vanilla, oak, branded sea stones, bites receptors, green apple, unripe grapes, malt, cherries, very distant smoke. Ascetic aroma.
    • Taste

Thick, sweet, juicy fruit, pepper, fragrant, with spices, cloves, bay leaves, grapes, stone crumbs.
    • Finish
      81 81
Thick, with a bunch of fragrant spices, long, cloves, basil, mineral, bitter.

  9. Ostap scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Strict drink. There is too much cognac in the aroma. Mineral and dry. A little unfriendly whisky, to my taste.
    • Nose
      86 86
Bright wine, mineral, intense, grapes, humidity, degree, white radish, pine needles, sour berries, dust and wet cardboard, significantly cognac, orange peel, watercolors, chocolate and mint notes, iodine, seaweed on the fireplace, caustic walnut peel, apple jam and vanilla sponge cake, milk iris.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pretty pepper, dry, raisins, salty, oak, mineral iodide, grilled fish
    • Finish
      84 84
Burns, not very long, pepper and oak, sour citrus peel, sour berries, mineral iodide.

    • Nose
      87 87
light smoky note flows first, aromatic and concentrated with smoky-sweet components. Touch of vanilla, fruity notes.

      * With the addition of water, the nose brightens a little, appears fruity and friendlier. Smoke still present, some oak and vanilla. A touch of vinous fruitiness, pleasant.
    • Taste
      88 88
Warm, with an easy start, oily, aromatic, sweetish-spicy, smoky, oak, becoming slightly dry, hint of bitter / tart ...

      * with a little water:
A bit more tamed but still aromatic with smoke, sweetish-spicy, oak.
Slightly sweeter than without adding water, but the oily is lost and the taste remains. Now also softer with a light barrel note and a hint of coffee.

The relatively young Springbank is bursting with strength!
    • Finish
      87 87
Slightly tart-sweet-tart, with oak, smoke and slightly fruity.
Finishing off with smoke / ash

      * with a little water:
Pleasantly aromatic, initially slightly sweet and fruity then drying out, slightly tart with smoke and oak spice.
Softly fading with a combination of oak, smoke and a hint of ash.

A good dram and a demanding one despite 9 years!

      88 88
Sweet, full of vanilla, cream, strawberry syrup. Some dark cocoa. After rest for more than 10 mins some Springbank mineral and dustiness appears. Maybe a touch of peat smoke.
    • Taste
      86 86
Unmistakably Springbank but sweater, and a little more salty than usual. Quite oily chewy mouthfeel, some peat. Strangely on second sip it becomes alot saltier..
    • Finish
      85 85
      Medium, rather clean and peppery.

Too much wine influence? Maybe. Besides the wine, apple cider, ginger, yeasty and bready, blueberries. A lot more red fruits, and become very sweet after a sip.
    • Taste
      83 83
Wine, some sweet grapes, bitter wood tannin, honey, vinegar.
    • Finish
      84 84
Rather pleasant, no wood tannin (surprise), light fruitiness and a not very long finish.

    • Finish

One of the few Springbanks that I can't really recommend buying at auction. Then again, I gave away my bottle about three months after I opened it. Maybe the spirit needed more time in the bottle. I thoroughly detested it, but I can't rate it below 82. It's not a poorly made whisky. It's just not to my taste. I found the wood influence to be quite unpleasant. It wasn't the slightly young age that turned me off. I've had Society bottlings at 9 years that have blown me away.

    An unusual and very edgy but good malt;
    [Color gold;
    • Nose
      "Disinfectant", juicy pear, grapefruit, grapefruit, vanilla;
    • Taste
      strong onset, wine aromas, grapes, sweetness, spice (oak, pepper), getting dry, complex;
    • Finish
      medium length finish; long dry spicy finish;

  22. Calmar scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Harmonious combination of wine finish and a young, hairy base, excellent balance, decent depth of flavor, powerful taste and a long berry-sour aftertaste. The wine influence is great, but nevertheless the solar-optimistic and invigorating dominant characteristic of the young Springbank is maintained.
    • Nose
Sweetish, wine, against the background of salty sea air and wet stones, hardly noticeable rubber notes, furniture varnish, apple peel, light notes of acetone, black currant, berry jam - strawberry, sweet cherry.
    • Taste
Red wine, rubber, a wave of red pepper, lemon zest, ginger, black currant, spicy oak.
    • Finish
      Wine-grapefruit, light ginger, cherry beer.

  23. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

First nose rich in apples. Then milk chocolate. Light, but powerful. Slight smoke. Malt builds up. On the palate a very nice presence, with a pinch of salt, a melted smoke, malt and chocolate again. The influence of the finish in casks of red wine does not appear to me very clearly, except in the finish where there is a beautiful sweetness. With water, it becomes a little spicy on the nose, and in the mouth, spices take a little over the other delicacies. I prefer it without water.
    Enthusiasm 4/5

  24. Palindrome scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

This bottle is not my cup of tea. The nose is interesting after some time goes by. However, the mouthfeel is astringent and the flavor is less than interesting. My least favorite part of this bottling is the finish, which is bitter and lackluster.

Nice interesting nose with some alcohol. Mild fruits. Something minerally tart.
First very strong in the mouth and slightly peppery with a lot of honey and heather.
Medium-length finish with some wood or oak and dry sweetness from the barrel.
The only seven-year-old Longrow GB pleased me a lot better.

Loads of fat vanilla on the nose.

Mouth is candied, yet thin, smart stuff.

Tasted blind, I didn't recognise the maritime and salty character of Springbank. I thought it was a nice Bourbon with some kind of mineral that lifts the mouth.

It's interesting but I wouldn't buy one, taste is a bit boring, too much vanilla for my taste, and monolitic. Yet balance is good.

  27. Sb17sw scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    Good composite with long legger.
    • Nose
Lots of orange, some vanilla, some nuts, a piff of smoke and hint of grass.
    • Taste
Taste: Strong but not as complex as other Springbeds. Much oak and sweetness from the Baroque.
    • Finish
Aftertaste: Spice with a little creamy aftertaste of oak. Goods for a long time and then finally the smoke comes. You know this for a long time.

[November, 2015]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 61 Euro in March, 2015.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 87,5.  My notes state a very bold winey taste that maybe is not to everybody's liking - but to mine...

    One of my favorite :-)
    • Nose
The typical Springbank character of sea breeze and light smoke paired with lots of orange peel and a little peach. A bit of wet metal bucket as in Hazelburn 10 lies in the background. If it lasts a long time, the bourbon barrel comes through with a wonderful vanilla note.
    • Taste
He has power - again, it is the typical Springbank start. Slightly creamy with a wonderful peppery and sparkling sharpness. The sweet orange peel are directly present. The oak is more likely to hold back.
    • Finish
Medium long and sweet with the slowly decreasing sharpness. The fruit remains first, before it is replaced by a light and pleasant bitterness.

Would I have to describe this Springbank in one word: Strange! In the nose, rare fruits and a very harmonious and exciting conglomerate from the experimental kitchen beckon. In the mouth then rich full-bodied start, towards the end becoming bitter and to say goodbye only a relatively short woody "Bye, that's it". All in all - no wine, nothing dark fruits.
For many who tried him, he was too unbalanced and "highly different". But hey - it's a Springbank! Who expects mainstream? I love him!
    • Nose
A spicy-sour fruitiness, most likely tamarind (yes, I already had that in the nose!), Unripe peaches and limes, then sweet caramel notes, almond and very little marzipan, and the fruits are getting sweeter, Pear and now more ripe peaches and oranges. After about 15 minutes then come the typical salty sea air of Springbank and beautiful spices such as cinnamon. The very subtle smoke completes the unusually exciting nose wonderfully.
    • Taste
A torrent of salivating sweet flavors in the mouth, Demerara sugar, salt caramel, candied lemon peel. The smoke is already more dominant here than in the nose, and were the first notes still watering, then gradually tannins tuck behind and astringently put everything dry again.
    • Finish
In the fairly short finish comes strong liquorice, some musty tart oak, exotic spices from the Asian kitchen and some smoke. The bean is not left over from fruit.

  42. rottendon scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Bad he is not, but an absolute Fasswhisky. The fire would be quite interchangeable here.
    • Nose
Red fruits, strong, reminiscent of Port. I do not really like smoke, just with a lot of imagination. Springbank? Hmm, not really.
    • Taste
In the taste there is no Spring Bank more, would have typed on Edradour, rather oblique notes. Pretty sweet and very fruity. Alcohol inclusion could be better.
    • Finish
The finish is relatively long with a little cake dough and still sweet fruits. Some licorice.

  43. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Very difficult combination, give him one point less than the Springbank 10, not to mention the (cheaper) 15er.
    • Nose
Alcoholic, pungent even after 10 minutes, marzipan behind, liquorice, apricot, cream
    • Taste
Tannins, tart red wine notes, pepper & salt, prominent oak, a bit earthy, lemon, maritime notes in between, rhubarb
    • Finish
Some peat, citrus, dry, medium long

  44. Harzermaltine scored this whisky 83 points Expert Junior

The color corresponds to an apple juice spritzer In the nose I have apple pie, covered apple pie with vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. And now I have Amaretto in my nose, oh ha .. now I still smell grapes, marzipan .. Normal I am sometimes
A little complicated, as far as whisky and wine finish are concerned ... at least now and then. A first sip. Warm, gentle and then a little rumps .. Then there is something bitter. Grapefruit. or?
and then here again a light sweetness, almond, a little marzipan. But the slight bitterness remains. Did you ever bite a cherry stone? just like that. The alcohol is super integrated, not too strong.
Apparently so again my problem with wine finish .. No question, not unbelievable, but also nothing, which I would necessarily need now in great form.

    Nose: Fruity
and sweet. Fresh tropical fruit. Slightly peated. Apple crumble pie
    Sweet ising
sugar. Fruit drops. Clove and vanilla. Brown sugar, ceral, a bit of cinnamon
and apple (That apple crumble pie thing again). Peat and a peppery note kicks
    in. Something herbal.
    Finish: Quite long. The
sweetness continues to the finish, but then dries out with peat notes and dry
woody notes. Not bitter in any unpleasant way.
    Comment: Wine cask
maturation is debated and opinions are split. I haven’t mentioned any wine

The smells great, rather soft, despite the 54.7%. I smell grapes, vanilla, sherry? A first sip then reveals everything: pure volume, heavy onset - but without burning. Very pleasant taste, without any distraction. Can not taste the Barolo, rather Sherry keg, but very fine. Long finish with lots of fruit, it will be a long, strong on the tongue. Wow!

After the nose has started so well, it falls off the complexity in the mouth and finish, off. That's a pity. Still a good whisky.
    • Nose
Immediately a fruity freshness rises in the nose, paired with delicate but not too weak smoke; nice creamy honey; Mirabelle; green and yellow apples; a kind of pear brandy lies with a slight dominance over all the notes; the smoke is gone now after about 5 minutes, but a little dustiness comes up; under the sweetness, some dryness slowly struggles upwards, has something of champagne; a sour-exotic mix of fruit underscores that; After the first sip, you can still guess some vanilla
    • Taste
oily; Immediately this sparkling feeling and the sour-exotic fruit mix are present; slightly dry tingling with black pepper; a very delicate initiation of smoke; a small herbal mix
    • Finish
gets a little drier here; some bitter almond with grapefruit; some herbs here as well; the bitternotes are quite long

No need to add water, it is self-sufficient. A lot of fun to taste this very nice malt.
    • Nose
A salty nose and quite vinous - probably because of the barolo. A little peat and exotic fruits, peach, pear, citrus and chocolate.
    • Taste
A very pleasant palate, on spices (pepper and chilli). Vanilla, exotic fruits, grape citrus and peat.

At the age of 9, he looks very mature. Nose and taste are far apart, but that makes the Gaja Barolo very exciting.
    • Nose
This is a "deep nose" that needs time to reveal itself. At the beginning a hint of liquorice. Continue very restrained, but then show over time of echoes of damp wood, wet hay, loose loam soil.
    • Taste
Strong start with a completely surprising sweetie. That may be the Barolo barrel. Salty, but no maritime salinity. Some peat.
    • Finish
Long, spicy, fruit sweet, peaty - and all wonderfully interwoven.

Lange finish waarin ziltigheid en "frisse zee" wat naar voren komt, gecombineerd met zoetheid van snoepkettinkjes.

There's not much red wine influence to be detected, which is strange because of the maturation in ex-Baralo casks. But that doesn't really matter, because I like this a lot. A good example of how young whisky can also be very good. Just don't expect a wine-y whisky.
    • Nose
Grainy and salty with peat and wood smoke. Oh, and a hint of rubber as well. I should also mention that this is very earthy. The peat mellows after a while and then white grapes, melon, peaches and lemons begin to shine through. Also some ozone (that distinct smell after is has rained).
    • Taste
Peat and campfire smoke with burlap, chalk and earthy notes. Some chocolate and oranges, as well as oranges. Pretty tannic.
    • Finish
Long. A hint of chocolate, some oranges. The peat and earthy notes also make an encore.

The nose fascinated me somehow and was really great. In terms of taste, the jumper was a new experience for me, whereas I never had such numbness on the palate and on my tongue while enjoying whisky.
    • Nose
Earthy, musty, slightly brittle and a hint of fruit.
    • Taste
Tingling with a slight sharpness (chilli?). Suddenly it gets sharper (despite adding water) and my palate and tongue go numb. After the sharpness has subsided, I still taste a little fruit.
    • Finish
Long and intense. Sharpness and warmth, slightly fruity.

    A nice and sweet
Springbank, with just a tad too much tannins to my taste.
    • Nose
      There is quite a lot
going on on the nose. Butane gas, peach, almonds, chocolate and oranges (always
a nice combo), pear drops, but also more typical Springbank traits such as
jute, chalk and some wet earth.
    • Taste
      On the palate the
earthy notes, jute, chalk, peat and some salt come first, before the red wine
influence shows. Unfortunately also quite some tannins both from the oak as the
wine. Then some red fruit. Think berries. Some rhubarb emerges. The peat fades
      away.
    • Finish
      On the finish, which
is medium long, the peat returns together with quite some tannins.

Is not bad, but I would like better if he was not so dry in the finish.
    • Nose
Goose Tender smoke envelops bright fruits like pineapple and pears. Marzipan chocolate and cream sweets served on moist moss. I like it very much.
    • Taste
But quite a lot of spicy oak for 9 years. Pepper and a pinch of sea salt, slightly bitter. Citrus fruits, pineapple and pears with a dab of vanilla sauce. Slightly dry. No more smoke.
    • Finish
Medium long, spicy and dry. The spice fades and the dryness remains.

    Tasting Notes by Whiskyfun.com (March 31, 2014):

It seems that this baby's the very last expression in this series, and so that there will be no more. I have to say I've never been a huge fan of these red wine finishings or double maturings. In this case, the whisky spent more than half his life in the Barolo casks, so 5 years out of 9.

Colour: pale gold. Rather strange as it’s supposed to be ex-fresh Barolo casks, but probably better like this.

Nose: unexpectedly light, with some fresh butter, yellow flowers and touches of tangerines at first nosing, then even pears, guavas and pineapples. I do not find much red wine at this point, let alone a usually rather heavy Barolo feeling. With water: more ‘Springbank’, with quite some raw barley and a little chalk, but all the fruits remain there.

Mouth (neat): sweet and creamy, with a lot of spicy European oak and quite some lemon zest, then the same fruits, including tropical ones, as in the nose. Also a little salt and brine, but not a lot of petroly/phenolic notes. With water: the heavy spices got milder, while the fruits got tarter. Maybe more mangos and rhubarb this time, as well as a discreet peatiness.

Finish: long, zesty and rather cleaner than the usual young Springbank. Quite a lot of tannins in the aftertaste.

Comments: I really like this one. They must have carefully rinsed the casks, or maybe they even steamed them. All for the better in my opinion.

    SGP:551 - 86 points.

Tasted the 19/3-2014, at Campbeltown Whisky Tasting incurred by Juul's Wine & Spirits in Copenhagen and held by Springbank export manager Melanie Stranger.
    • Nose
Sweet and oily with notes of red wine, pear, pineapple, papaya, orange, caramel, nuts, cocoa, chocolate, marzipan, dry hay, malt, salt and cedar wood.
    • Taste
Spicy and bitter with notes of red wine, orange crunch, pineapple, rhubarb, buttercups, tea leaves, caramel, white pepper, vanilla, wood cask and sea salt.
    • Finish
Medium length, slightly peaty and dry with notes of red wine, white pepper, caramel, cloves and raspberry.

The wine influence was much more apparent in the Longrow Gaja Barolo and worked better in that more peated whisky. In this one it mainly strengthens Springbank's natural oily fruitiness.
    • Nose
Mango, papaya, pineapple, caramel, peat, salt, orange, yellow raisin, blueberry, banana, chilli pepper, vanilla cookie, apple compote, fatty herring,  malt and lacquered wood. Quite oily.
    • Taste
Surprisingly peppery. Papaya, mango, vanilla, pineapple, milk chocolate, almond, caramel and grape. With water more caramel.
    • Finish
Mango, pepper, milk chocolate, toffee, clove, peat ash, red wine and orange.

    (Distillery) Tasting Note:
    Colour - Golden honey
Nose - Initial aromas of liquorice are followed by poached pears, chocolate, cream and marzipan.
Springbank`s traditional earthy and coastal influence qualities also make an appearance.
Palate - There is no mistaking the red wine tannins from the Gaja Barolo
casks, complemented by earthy and woody notes. Swedish lingonberries and rhubarb crumble give the whisky
some sweetness and a touch of sea salt also comes into play.
Finish - This is like raspberry ripple ice cream but combined with peat and spices and a medium dry finish.
