    ‘Pairs’ malt
N: Striking musty note - Dunnage warehouse?, nice! Nutty honey, fresh cocao husk, super clean delivery on the nose but not without interesting oily mineral notes to boot. Also floral with a touch of soap, scented candles alongside everglade wet ferns and a hint of peat with the grain. These notes all came in pairs, one lead to another before another set revealed itself.
T:  Continuing on the pairs theme on the nose - the palate continues its robust but simple pattern - sweet to bitter. Its a malty, fruity, honey body with good amounts of wood showing. After some heavy watering down the oaky, honey malt is still fully intact. Sweet at first before a gentle shift towards bitter/sour oak
F: Bitter wood with sweet aniseed leading to a light fisherman’s friend finish. Not long
C: Simple, balanced, rich and giving.

    Scores a B

    SMWS Tasting Notes

    Colour: Jurassic amber

    Flavour: Light & delicate

The nose delivered instant reassurance, with old familiar scents of a lady’s handbag – soft leather, fag packets, sherbet lemons and perfume – then we got well-cooked fruit cake, nectarine, peach and plum, pine trees, varnish and triple sec. The palate similarly suggested ‘old-fashioned’ perfumes (Dior, Tweed) lipstick and leather – with polo fruits, mint Toffoes and caramel bringing sweetness to balance the perfumy bitterness. With water, the nose shifted to laurel hedges, geranium and cognac, followed by Twister ice-lollies and meringues. The reduced palate exuded quality and subtlety – passion-fruit, grape and garden peas – a flavoursome, pleasant offering from John Duff’s 1894 distillery.

Drinking tip: To provide reassurance and comforting memories.
