    SMWS notes:

    Multifarious sweetjoys

    Cask No. 1.174

NOSE: Iced Vovo’s. Columbine chews. Sweet Nutella. Hot chocolate fudge sundae. A rich Semillon. Then come some very happy savoury notes: Cream of chicken & corn soup, pear syrup, old hay, and - dare we say it? - hints of elastoplast & hospital bandages.

PALATE: Palate isn’t as sweet as the nose suggested, but there’s an insertion of oak to make up for it, and we kept getting puzzling hints of peat. “It keeps hiding and ducking, but I’m sure it’s in there!” wrote MH. There’s a “green” note to it, perhaps like rocket lettuce leaf or similar, but this is thrown in contrast by the vanilla that comes from the oak. Malt extract returns, along with a tasty creaminess. An enjoyable and happy Highlander!

FINISH: Some of the notes from the nose now make a return, particularly the white wine note, which is very evident on the finish.

COMMENTS: Nose, palate and finish all display a duality of sweet versus savoury, making for an interesting and complex experience. The oak throws up tasty vanilla to balance and refine, and it’s solid, satisfying, and engaging. Aged expressions from this distillery typically display much stronger sherry influence - this cask offers a wider spectrum.

UK Tasting Panel: The nose revealed multifarious sweet joys – crème brûlée, spun sugar, cinder toffee, cherry fruit-cake, marzipan, toffee apples and profiteroles with chocolate caramel sauce; Jamaican ginger cake, nutmeg, leather armchairs, citrus, wood sap and new engine oil. The palate similarly displayed caramelized sugar, toffee and fudge sweetness, all mollified by teasing spices of white pepper, liquorice, cinnamon and cumin – add in some fruit (apple, orange, rhubarb, white grape) the garibaldi biscuits, fresh-baked fruit-cake and dry woodiness and the overall mouth-effect was very attractive indeed – sweet and easy, yet complex, elegant and sophisticated. Family owned distillery near Marypark.
