a very big whisky at an honorable price, and for an almost incredible duration.

On the nose, an explosion of scents on the currants, on the macerated fruit, on an iodized mineral side, on old and sodden wood, in short with a return of old Moscatel cork, one has plenty of nostrils!
    • Nose
      sherry, dust, mold, iodine, hardwood;
macerated and stewed fruits on rather orange or orangey fruits.
      a little grass, freshness!
    • Taste
      divine!!
wood, leather, discrete smoke, fruits cooked and simmering on a cooker edge and some varnish oozing from the beam.

I can easily say that this is the best Arran I have drunk so far. But that is very easy since this is my second Arran
    • Nose
A rich, full, deep, intense and complex whisky with notes of rich sherry, figs, dates, chocolate, plums, raisins, red currants, spicy oak, cinnamon, clove, ginger, caraway seed, allspice, mocha, antique wax, old books , mineral notes, earthy notes, roasted almond, caramel, toffee, gingerbread, hint to cedar, biscuits and a hint of pine needles.
    • Taste
An intensive, powerful, spicy, rich, layered and complex whisky with notes of spices (ginger, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, pepper), dried fruits (tutti frutti), dried apricots, dates, figs, dried cherries, sweet pipe tobacco, walnuts , chestnuts, dark caster sugar, strong English tea, raisins, marmalade, freshly baked cake, gingerbread, mocha, dark bitter chocolate, tannins, strong oaks, red berries and a hint of raspberries.
    • Finish
A long, warm, rich and slightly drying aftertaste with notes of marmalade, chocolate, babe, oak, tannins, a hint to salty and soft sweet liquorice.

Big sherry on the nose, plums, fig jam, sweet spices, then it jostles, coffee, milk chocolate, the smell of an old paperback that we would not have opened for a long time, a hint of menthol, thuja. Opens with water,

In the mouth, it is just as sherry, with a dry and tannic side, the wood is present, but fortunately balanced by raisins, tobacco, cloves. Alcohol is however present. It is really better with water that removes the alcoholic burn without affecting the very good concentration of this malt or bring additional bitterness.

Long finish, liquorice but also tannic and quite astringent. Here too, the addition of water has a largely positive effect.

In summary, a big sherry cask that task, not bad in the state but which only gives its full potential once diluted. Do not hesitate to add enough water, it is a very good swimmer.

Arran 16y 1996/2013, 55.7%, OB, Private Cask for Jan Vissers, 174 bottles
All right, putting the nose in the glass, immediately makes clear that this is terribly good stuff. Fresh, sweet, fruity and complex sherry. First that fresh. There is eucalyptus, there is laurel, there is something light minerals (lime?). There are also red berries (with sugar, sweet acid) and blackberries. Then the sweet. We already had the sugar, which is now going to candy, but we also have almond paste (more on the nuts, less sweet than marzipan). In addition to the berries, all kinds of dried fruit can be discerned. Especially plums, figs and raisins. And even grape juice after some time. So complex. And it has not been done yet. The oloroso also brings the smell of cigarette boxes, just like that of praliné. Of course I should not forget the oak, but it does not dominate the smell, it leaves more than enough room for all of the above. The color could suggest that it might turn into a taste trigger on the taste. Good news: that is not the case. The oak is more prominent, is even big, but there are, especially when you add water, enough sweet and fruity flavors to balance the whole. The fruit is quite diverse. Both the red, juicy variety, and the dried (dates, figs), as well as the candied. The latter brings me to the bolus (a sadly enough defunct coffee cake). Dark chocolate and almonds provide a nice bitterness. Herbs are also abundant. Pepper, salt, nutmeg. The mouthfeel is powerful, dry and warming. Long, complex and dry aftertaste on oak, chocolate, berries and herbs. He needs some water for my taste (but I am a sensitive little guy), and then he can easily reach the level of the beautiful nose. Wow. 90/100 http://onversneden.com/2013/11/05/arran-1996-voor-jan-vissers/

    • Nose
Raisin, hazelnut, hot chestnuts, brown sugar, broth, malt, pine trees, tomato plant twigs and mocha. Some red fruits in the background, but most notes are as brown as this whisky's colour.
    • Taste
Raisin, dark chocolate, mocha, roasted almond, caramel, liquorice, broth drops (Maggi), eucalyptus and a spicy touch like nutmeg. With water some blackberry.
    • Finish
Very dark: Dark chocolate, mocha, espresso, raisin and marzipan.

For me by far one of the best, darkest Arran i ever had...gorgeous work from Mr.Ambassador Jan Vissers
    • Nose
Indeed a very gorgeous, fresh and expressive sherry nose, raisins, brown sugar,oak...and indeed like mark said a slight bit of eucalyptus!?it reminds me more to a conifer tree...complex,fresh and well balanced!
    • Taste
Sherry bomb, again the sweet raisins (sherry ofcourse),dark chocolat, oak, walnuts and hazelnuts...bit punchy(cask strenght)but not it stays gentle...
    • Finish
      Lingering soft sherry,oak,chocolat...

Outstanding! As far as I was able to ascertain, this limited
bottling is sold out already. Boy, am I happy with mine, as this is the best
Arran I have tried so far. Nice one, Jan!
    • Nose
The nose is very expressive with sherry as the leitmotif:
plums, raisins, fresh figs, redcurrants, nicely upholstered with cinnamon and
cloves. Mint, or is it eucalyptus? Nicely fresh yet complex. Milk chocolate,
sugared almonds, mocha and candied sugar. A splash of caramel and a trace of
      oak. Magnificent.
    • Taste
It does not come as a surprise that sherry also leads
on the palate, with dried, dark fruit, sugar and chocolate. The oak is much
louder, giving it a bitter edge. But there is more than enough fruit to counter
this. Chewing tobacco and walnuts. Pretty punchy! With a drop of water, the
balance improves. It even contains a pinch of salt. Complex animal!
    • Finish
The long, drying finish on chocolate, oak and
liquorice, make me enjoy this for minutes on end.

proceed by small gusts to avoid the effect OOoooompf, otherwise you will make a funny face in the first mouth. A man warned etc ...
    • Nose
what to say? uh, kind wouuuuuuuh? Complex, very dense, to drown in it! Dried fries, such as raisins, cranberries, figs, dates. Stewed fruit, toasted almonds, marzipan. It's super loaded and greedy. Christmas Cake? With a little patience, the whisky opens with notes of citrus (oranges, tangerines) and orange blossom.
    • Taste
An atomic bomb. The palate is over-saturated, but the beverage is not cloying. Explosive to attack. Fruity. Long. Spicy, cinnamon, pepper. A touch of freshness in the middle of the mouth (camphor, menthol)
    • Finish
Cloves, bay leaves, pepper, and a malty roundness to round the corners. The malt pulse, beautiful, suave, it looks like a malteser. And while we are "chewing" the whisky, we put our nose back in, so beautiful.
