I really enjoyed this dram. I like most of the Distiller’s editions, especially the peaty ones but sometimes they only add a narrow level of character to the whisky, whereas with this it adds quite an interesting dimension with the sticky sweet Moscatel mixing quite well with Caol Ila’s ashy and light fruity character.

It only really suffers from chill filtration which I think prevents some of the nicer notes on the nose from carrying through to the palate and finish which would have evened out the bitterness a little.

    • Nose
Ashy fruit. Waxy orange peels.Lychee. Asian pears. Raspberry sherbet. A slight sulfury note. Coal dust. Wet stones in the sun. Something dusty. The intensity of the smoky and ashy notes gets a little stronger with some glass time.
    • Taste
Ash. Bitter pears. Bitter wood. Syrup from canned fruit salad. Slightly grassy, slightly malty. Sage. Custard. New motor oil.
    • Finish
Medium. Lingering bitterness from the palate, creamy vanilla porridge with some wood smoke, and finally a flair of motor oil and ginger.

    • Nose
      Colour:
      Shiny gold

      Nose:
A nice, dense, sweetish smoke note comes first. Immediately lemon and a subtle ham flavor with a pinch of salt. Vanilla and green grapes. In addition a light, tropical fruit smell. In combination with the sweetness from the beginning, that reminds me a bit of Haribo Tropifrutti. If you let something stand, this aroma moves clearly backwards. He is now much colder and fresher. Wet sandstone and slightly brackish water.
    • Taste
Soft start. Then comes the cold-chilled smoke and a good deal of pepper. In the taste less fruit, but much more tart herbs and overripe lemon. Also in the taste of this cold aroma of sandstone and brackish seawater. This light-fruited, which I can not determine directly. I mean at the second sip rauszusmecken a little more mirabelle.
    • Finish
Medium. Ashy smoke. Again the pepper. With a creamy sweetness and vanilla. Subtle bitterness behind.

An ashy peat that disappears fairly quickly in favor of something lighter, soft, a little dull even by contrast at first. The bourbon barrel appears clearly (vanilla) but where is the finishing drum? Sweet nose with a hint of white grapes while waiting a little. In the mouth, the peat is very well integrated in a fluid texture, with a lot of sweetness. The barrel of Moscatel finally expresses itself fully. Very sweet and elegant with a lot of fruitiness. This impression continues in the finale, with a small return of ashes.
    Enthusiasm 4/5

Fairly disappointing, might as well have bought the regular 12yo instead. The only saving grace is this is a Caol Ila after all ...

Interesting but not quite mine. The spicy character of the 12er is significantly mitigated and goes in the tropical direction.
    • Nose
typical Caol Ila smoke, Gelebanane, Lychee, Kiwi, wine-fruity, it is sweeter, nutty, orange peel, oily, tart honey, mint, compared to the 12er less vanillig, but it is there, more in the tropical direction, very interesting
    • Taste
Low smoke, buttery, vanilla, mild, low spice, sweet fruit, sea aromas, malt, apricots, honeydew melon, khaki
    • Finish
maritime, subtle smoke, slight bitterness, honey, malt, rather short to medium long

I always liked the DE very much from Caol Ila, Moscatel 1) a very interesting idea for peat whisky (eigtl a bit contradictory) and 2) it fits just when, then to Caol Ila good.
    • Nose
Beautiful very sweet and sweet peat note, combined with white wine, white grapes, apricot, lychee, honey, mint, orange
    • Taste
Typical Caol Ila, sweetish, reasonably strong peat, apricot & white wine, grapes, nettle melon, all in spicy honey, gentle mint, some smoked ham
    • Finish
The peat remains, especially at the first sip, to the honey-like sweetness, a little dry oak, probably. a touch too dry-ashes at the first sip, later sweetish with more fruit
