If you are afraid of these 'peat monsters' from Islay, this robust Single Malt could be something for you: Isle of Jura Superstition is advertised as 'lightly peated' whisky. Unfortunately, it bears no age statement, although the 43% ABV definitely help to bring out the flavor of this rather young malt. On the nose, you can find delicate peat smoke, toffee and hints of marzipan. The taste is mildly spicy and peppery, and yet sweet with honey and cinnamon. Overall, it's quite a two-dimensional and artificial Island whisky - but with a decent roundness and complexity.

Are there better whiskies out there? Yep, it is not top of the league stuff but in my opinion a very reasonable whisky for a reasonable price. Easy drinkable and very enjoyable. It’s one of those examples of appreciating it more after a visit to the distillery, the island, the nature, the culture, the ambiance and the people. Isle of Jura really is a must visit! Being there is understanding it. Terroir does count :) see for yourself.
    • Nose
Earthy, muddy, caramel, vanilla and salty. Decent and gentle. Sweet malted barley. Not a lot of change over time or with water. It’s an easy drinkable whisky. Not one to keep sniffing. What you see is what you get.
    • Taste
Caramel fudge, honeysyrup, cinnamoncookies and vanilla. There is a real subtle hint of peat to be found. More like a campfire. It is pleasant to hold it in your mouth for a while longer then usual.
    • Finish
Medium. Slightly bitter at the start but creamy, sweet and soft straight after. Caramel fudge, wood spice, some tannine and hints of bread but in a pleasant way. A little dry at the end. Pleasant finish. Also here it is more like a trace of a smoldering campfire then a straight in your face peat experience.

N: Smoked citruses and dried fruits, peat nuances, bread notes, slight twilight, salami pizza.
T: Sour-tart, sweetish in places, the sourness of dried fruit, the crust of bread.
F: Hay and vanilla, malt notes, and again a crust of bread.
B: Pitco, peat in moderation, fruit in moderation, total in moderation. Very balanced.

    Surprisingly good!
    • Nose
A nice, fruity nose. I feel more like sherry than smoke. But also some spices in the aroma, marzipan, nutty.
    • Taste
Fruity even in the beginning, heavy sherry, chocolate, juniper, wet wood.
    • Finish
On the finish rather spicy, medium in length.

    • Nose
      Orange, marzipan and some smoke
    • Taste
      light smoke, marzipan and cinnamon
    • Finish
the smoke disappears relatively quickly, it remains a pepper note

  9. Blo scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Honest and unpretentious, a good intro to those who are not fans of too powerful peat in the pure style of Islay.
    • Nose
Very light peat farm, with in the distance some yellow fruits and malt. Toffee and a little coffee too. A little shy but not unpleasant at all!
    • Taste
Malt, mixed cereals type muesli, a peat a little more present than the nose. Quite simple but relatively convincing despite the reduction.
    • Finish
      Pretty short.

  10. Goethe scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

A very easy but pleasant smoked Jura with some sweet (sherry) notes.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10
    • Nose
Smoke, vanilla, hits of sherry, cinnamon, caramel, some candied apples.
    • Taste
      Smoke, caramel, wild honey, vanilla.
    • Finish
      Medium. Oak, vanilla, getting dryer.
