A beautiful piece of BenRiach, the PX finish I like, just as I like the PX itself. Re-tasted at the 2014 Whisky Festival.
    • Nose
Dense, heavy smell, PX everywhere, even age, is reflected here. Jitrocel syrup, pendrek, overgrowth gooseberry. A great experience for olfactory cells. (91 b)
    • Taste
Even though 53.3% of alcohol is not so much, the edges (sharpness) have been washed and trimmed for years in the barrel. Slightly sweetish, then a flush of wood and toasted bread, a tanned barrel. Dry touch, toast. After the glass vents, a lot of bitter chocolate, beauty, appears. (87 b)

NOSE: Initially old wooden furniture, dustiness, gradually unfolds its complexity; dark citrus, mint, meat stock. Very concentrated. (92p)
TASTE: The arrival is very concentrated wth buttery dark caramel and overbrewed tea with milk. On the mid palate dry, concentrated, dried (almost dusty) fruits. Flint smoke. Dry browned butter, old leather, tobacco. With water; opens up, looses a little punch but displays more complexity. (92p)
FINISH: Leather, tobacco, some tannins, hints of crushed black pepper. (90p)
OVERALL: Lovely whisky and a successfull PX maturation. Takes water well. Total score 92 points.

Nose: Sweet fruit: apricots, pears, baked apples

Taste: notes of chocolate, apricot, sweet dried fruit, cinnamon. Everything is nicely connected and so consistent.

    Benriach 21y 1992/2013, 53.3%, OB batch 10, PX Finish, Hogshead # 986, 312 bottles
PX, that's sweet sherry. So a lot of dried and candied fruit, syrup and candy. In random order I can smell cough syrup, dates, figs, raisins (sultanas), pear syrup and candy sugar. Only behind that are herbs hidden. Cloves, licorice, cinnamon. Very light smoke in the background. Tobacco and smoked ham. Juicy oak. Quite complex and especially delicious to smell. The mouthfeel is creamy and thick. The sherry brings more fruit than spices, which I can only applaud. Orange, raisins, dates, figs and candied fruit. Chocolate and candy make it even sweeter. Without it being really sweet. it remains whisky of course. In addition, other than sweet things can be discerned. Nuts for example. And coffee and leather. And herbs such as mint and cinnamon. The oak keeps a low profile. The aftertaste is quite long, sweet and spicy. A more than successful finish if you ask me, the Pedro Ximénez is an absolute added value. Top! 90/100

Yep, this is the better BenRiach. Very nice PX touch. Thanks, Jeroen!
    • Nose
Oh, yeah! The nose is a feast. Very sweet on the usual sherry suspects:
sultanas, espresso, dades, figs, rum raisins and more goodies of the sort, but
all of the highest quality. Loads of cinnamon, hint of cloves, touch of
balsamic. Sirop de Liège. Stewed apples. This is amazingly good.
    • Taste
Full and creamy taste with a huge fruitiness in the shape of caramelized
oranges, dark chocolate, cough syrup (no joke), fresh garden herbs and plum
liqueur. This is big. The PX puts its indelible stamp on it and when the result
is this succulent, there are no regrets.
    • Finish
Long, warm, sweet, spicy, wonderful finish!

My comment : Wonderful nose, very sweet on palate, great body, structure and balance. Good length, some coffee in the aftertaste. Great!

Tasted by (08/02/2014) and scored 90/100. Same score for Serge on

    Bottler`s Tasting Notes:

    Colour: Golden mahogany.

Nose: Gentle sultanas laced with barley sugar gently move to stewed apples and hints of cinnamon.

Taste: Chocolate orange and ripe orchard fruits fill the mouth. Gentle waves of freshly ripped herbs compliment the rich barley and syrup finish.
