Auchentoshan Three Wood, 43%, original bottling (circa 2006). Ageing: Bourbon casks, then Oloroso and Pedro-Ximinez sherr casks

Nose: Very special. Flower meadow, sweet sherry and a little gunpowder. Chinese plum wine, sultanas and chicory, plus a little wood glue. In the background I sense flambéed oranges with caramel and brandy. The flowery sweetness comes through again and again, so the Auchentoshan keeps a pleasant lightness.

Palate: Raisins and dates meet wet wood planks and orange cream. I also find cloves, caramel and some marzipan, zabaglione and dried apricots. I still notice a slightly tingling acidity, overall the sherry aromas dominate.

Finish: Short to medium length, pleasantly sweet with a delicate portion of dry oak, toasted almonds towards the end.

Conclusion: Despite its strong sherry aromas, this Auchentsohan is light as a feather, a pleasantly drinkable single malt. 82/100 points (2022)

22+ 22 20 21+ 86 - delicious sherry whisky from the opening, cool topic for a drink! If he had a little more aftertaste, then he would have had more points, and he wouldn’t have had a price!)

21+ 21+ 20 21 84, - in the middle and then at the bottom of the bottle: very sweet, dusty raisins, delicious! It has been open for a month and a half and everything is fine, we can say that this is already an old bottling!

Aging in ex-bourbon casks, followed by further aging in an Oloroso sherry cask and finally in a sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry cask.

    Blenders Glass.
Sherry nose (dark raisins, dried apricots, prunes), woody, Virginia tobacco, leather, light notes of freshly cut grass and citrus 22
The taste is first sweet sherry (raisins, dates, figs), then tart, woody and spicy (peppery) 22
The aftertaste is warm and pleasant, of medium duration, develops and goes into woody and sherry sweetness (but moderate-not cloying), dry and astringent finish 22
Comprehensive and well balanced malt B22
    Solid 88 without compromise.
Probably the best Okentoshan I've ever tried (Solera was also good)

Full of nectar. A really great mix that covers a variety of favorite flavors. A clear recommendation for this old bottling. If it still tastes so great these days (2018), it is an insider tip for price / performance. Do so much right, just great.
    • Nose
      80 80
"Freaky mix" is my first thought. A bit like dropping sherry whisky in a sugar syrup. In addition to the sweetness of brown sugar, I find prunes and semi-fresh black fruits such as blackberries, currants, etc. Somewhere there is also a very slight sourness. To be honest, all of these flavors are so dominant that I can only easily guess a woodiness and / or spiciness. After the first sip, I am more sensitive to the spicy aromas that may be present.
    • Taste
      80 80
There it is, the woody spiciness, but something of. A peppery tingling sensation on the tip of the tongue on first contact. Only after about ten seconds, when everything has been well distributed in the mouth, do the fruity and sweet tastes appear, but weaker than in the smell.
    • Finish
      80 80
Contrary to my expectations, the spicy woody part quickly becomes weaker and the sweet fruit part stays longer.

    delicious well drinkable whisky (10/17/2010)
    • Nose
delicate woody gives the impression of light smoke, roasted coffee, toast, caramel
    • Taste
balanced, mild, with an interplay between sweet caramel notes and dry wood aromas, impression of smoke, a little hay or dry grass, lightly drinkable body
    • Finish
      rather short and mild

    Farbe: Chestnut / Oloroso Sherry
    • Nose
Sulfur or not sulfur? A little sulfur. Air drives it out of the nose, at least. Dates and overripe plums, smells old and musty, maybe a bit stale. Old hay. According to the newer TW: rotten egg. No thanks. With a lot of breathing this sulfur + lots of Oloroso Combo cough syrup becomes. Very nice.
    • Taste
Yes, nothing more musty, sulfur yes, Oloroso yes, even a lot, tree sap, straw, mirabelle plums, cinnamon, charred wood. Really bitter. Pretty racy for the time in the bottle.
    • Finish
      Dates, bitter, short.

[March, 2014]  I had this dram during a "Lowlands" rarities tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5.  My notes state a light and sweet profile with some unpleasant perfumy notes.

    Body;Oily, marshmallows like.
    • Nose
      Soft. Orange zest, apricot, dates,marshmallows.
    • Taste
Perfumy, lemon grass, cashews. A delicate interplay of flavours, but the whisky struggles to make itself heard among the woods. Better with little or no water.
    • Finish
Long. Creamy.Raisins. Aniseed. Fresh oak. Sappy dryness.

I don't have much to say about it, it left me unimpressed. A rather faint-hearted dram.
    • Nose
      Vanilla, sherry, plums.
    • Taste
Caramel, oak, pear jam, brown sugar
    • Finish
Very sweet. Medium in length and fresh.

Auchentoshan is my chill out brand, when I want to have a treat but not overload the senses.

Still not had a bad one, this one's neither. It's much more going on in flavour and sweetness than in the straight 10yo though,

Even so, it's not a GlenDronach, so it's a bit sad to see thay feel the need to colour it to make an impresion of something it's not.

It can totally stand it's own ground.

The back of the box of this 50ml miniature says this Whisky is triple distilled and matured in American bourbon oak, then finished in Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez (PX) casks

COLOUR: Dark russet: the box says "mit Farbstoff (Zuckerkulör)", so the colour isn't from the cask

NOSE: Sweet dark fruit from the sherry cask - rich, soaked prunes. Baked apple and cinnamon. Cardboard and paint in the background. Later: chocolate orange.

PALATE: Thin mouthfeel. Dark fruit flavours at the start - but this in no Glendronach sherry bomb, comparatively dry. Flavour is a little thin after the initial fruit

FINISH: After the thin mid-delivery, rich dark fruit returns and lingers on the back and sides of the tongue. Actually fairly long.

CONCLUSIONS: Despite the rich prune and apple nose the mid-delivery is weak before richness returns at the finish. I've never experienced that with a whisky before. Enjoyable, though.

One of my first Lowlands and one that I really like. I have recommended this particular one because it is a triple wood and so complex. The flavor profile is incredible, especially as you begin to have a couple drams of it. Love this for everyday or to get the senses warmed up.

Tasty and good to drink but not very complex
    • Nose
Sherry, vanilla, butter biscuits, pudding, Christmas stollen
    • Taste
Very sweet, fruity, on the palate a little drier
    • Finish
      rather short, sweet

A beautifull smooth Auchentoshan malt. Perhaps a little to much sweet and sherried for an hardcore whisky evening. But really pleasant next to an glass of fresh lemonade sparkling water.
    • Nose
Dried fruits; plums, oranges and raisins.
    • Taste
Really full/sweet sherried; caramel, dark chocolade, orange peel & the dried fruits.
    • Finish
Now the wood really comes in place. A sherried ( perhaps a bit too much ), sweet, but rather short finish.
