[October, 2017]  Every other year I (re)taste a standard Macallan simply to check if things improved in the meantime.  Unfortunately, it got worst only so far.  So I bought this dram at the hotel bar tonight (this is by far the most expensive whisky here, ridiculous!).  By the way, I use my own appropriate tasting glass to do this review...

The colour is amber what is not relevant anyhow as they use caramel to adjust it.  The texture shows a few medium fast legs and a few late tears.  The nose is ... no, this is not whisky - this is the nose of a glass of pure dry sherry wine (I know such a nose very well as I often drink a glass of sherry at restaurants before dinner, to support the whisky industry with empty sherry casks...).  Oh my god, this is really a shame!  No whisky aroma at all and the profile is bland and immature.  I clearly prefer the nose of the sherry wine over that!!!  It arrives in the mouth hot and peppery with just a very little coating effect.  The taste is not much better, some barley sugars and sherry wine flavours (please note:  these are quite different to sherry cask-induced whisky flavours), that's it!  The finish is short and owns absolutely nothing that is remarkable.  Somehow this smells and tastes as if there was quite a substantial amount of liquid sherry wine still in the cask when they filled the new make in (you know, this is strictly forbidden by Scottish law!).

Macallan has reached a point now where I use the spittoon instead of swallowing the rest of the dram.  This once so mighty whisky was killed by the pure greediness of its owners (an investment group) and it is a shame to offer such a bad whisky quality to consumers at all - taking into account the price point it is ... impertinence!

PS:  Sorry to all the folks that love this whisky but I grew up with a very different quality of Macallan (it was that quality what made Macallan famous, not today's).  But if you really enjoy the modern "designed" Macallan this is absolutely fine with me - you can have all of it (I will buy the next dram to (re)taste in 2020 earliest)...

Shockingly poor quality from Macallan. Seems the cash grab has become more important than producing the quality whisky they did up to 2 decades ago.
Best thing about it is the nose - sherrybomb-like and hints at a flavor profile and complexity that the palate never comes close to delivering. Tastes thin/ watery with strong alcohol notes (despite being 43% abv). A little sherry on the palate but never really developing into much more. Finish is medium with a little sweetness and oak spiciness. I’ll let it sit for a few weeks to see if anything changes. Had to reach for a dram of laphroaig to get the taste out of my mouth.

    Outstanding whisky!
    • Nose
First vanilla, then sweet oranges and then apples. Very fresh and fruity with a great oak note.
    • Taste
At first very mild and then again oranges and apples. Then a peppery spiciness that is soon replaced by dark fruits and vanilla. Strong!
    • Finish
Long-lasting sweet dark fruits, vanilla and oak notes.

    - a very pleasant single malt with a mild one
    sweet and slightly spicy character,
    - very good NAS whisky
    - significantly better than the AMBER
    - you notice here the better barrel selection combined
    with older vintages
    - very fruity and dangerous compared to the RUBY
    tasty
    - for the originally about 70 € fully in order
    - for me in the PLV the best of the series: 1824
    • Nose
clearer sweet sherry, dark fruits, despite NAS a "higher" well matured age is recognizable
    • Taste
soft, slightly spicy onset, dark fruits, grapes, a subtle spice on the back
    • Finish
      medium-long, soft fruity finish;
      medium-length sherry aftertaste, becoming dry

Very good, round, volume, light and fruity, apple, not really my favorite taste profile, but very cool here. Doesn't look like a typical NAS. Sherry is also there, subtle, but also well integrated again.

An official Macallan. Mainly I tend to try one or two on a festival, but havn't found a proper one yet which has a good price-quality ratio.

    At nose,
spices and macerated fruits, between cinnamon and cooked, candied mandarin
    In mouth,
spices, orange fruits, very strong vanilla, pastry with cinnamon and Christmas brioche; it's also very sweet
    Finally,
we find spices, a heavy aroma of fruit and a hint of bitter chocolate.

A good fruity dram to drink as a dessert, unpretentious compared to the old productions, a bit low in alcohol but very recommendable!

Sweet but raw alcohol, very closed and young. Some spices and weak citrus. Some sherry tones in the distance.
    • Taste

Young sherry tones but no oak character. Roasted raisins, pepper and spices. Some dark fruits. Overall very thin.
    • Finish

Short, with sweet raisins that fades very fast. Some pepper and a little sherry.

  17. Don Cassi scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

A bit dirty and spicy on the nose compared to other sherry malts with aromas of grain. In addition, nice sweet-fruity sherry barrel aromas: oranges, leather and some wood polish. Over time also vanilla and sporadically blood orange / tangerine. Could be a bit stronger but the keynote fits.

Soft in the mouth, round, a little spicy but too thin overall.

In the finish there is a good portion of spice, but it doesn't last long, followed by blood orange / grapefruit, polish, wood and a little espresso.
    Length: 4/10

The nose is great, but then it suffers from too little intensity.

Overall, pleasing sherrymalt, which, however, cannot stand out from the crowd. Therefore and because of the low alcohol content, unfortunately too expensive for what it offers.

First thing I taste are oranges. Complemented by dried fruit tones of raisins and figs. A sharp bite of ginger pushes through. Some sweet tones of vanilla cake and white chocolate follows up and at the end a spicy tone of nutmeg end the palate.

Medium-long and very warm. An oaky taste with vanilla pods keeps lingering.

Fun malt, can't recall any off notes. Not a sherry bomb and not old 10/12 either, but good for what it is. Bought it on sale for 62 instead of 80 EUR which is the max price I'd pay for it. Maybe the best of the regular "1824 NAS judge by color" series.

Not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. Yes, it's more American-oak influenced than the age-stated Macallans. Yes, they tried to mask the younger components by using more first-fill casks, and the result is a bit vulgar. Yes, the finish isn't particularly compelling.

But hey: you get a LOT of sherry character (an especially salient point for those who tend to complain about "too much refill"), and it's actually pretty expertly balanced with the distillery character, which shines through beautifully.

Is this a complex (the most overused word in whisky world, btw) dram that will engage the connoisseur for hours on end? No, but it's certainly a well-made everyday dram that will please pretty much everyone you hand a glass to. Now, if they just lowered the price by, say, twenty bucks...

Nose: Intense sherry, chocolate, warm and subtle oak. Then, more vinous. Later, dried fruits and honey that comes harmonize everything. On the palate, spicy (clove type), honey also, but the aqueous side of the texture is a little mess. Swallowing, sherry shines shining so briefly and then crosses over into something more rough, bitter 75% - 25% acid. It's funny how so many strengths but also weaknesses can sometimes rub! Enthusiasm 3/5

Very nice composition. Nuts, sweet sherry tones, different fruits, chocolate or Jaffacake. Then fine roasted aromas, oak, a touch of leather and a lot of malt and dry chocolate cake.
    • Taste
Sweet, sherry-rich onset, light dried fruits, nuts, caramel, milk chocolate, chocolate raisins, oatmeal cookies with chocolate coating, fine roasted aromas and oak.
    • Finish
Long and complex. Sherry tonic with notes of chocolate, nuts and light dried fruits.

"A balanced light nose with sprinkles of vanilla, oak and orange saves its punch for the palate with a roundhouse blast of citrus peels and spice. These flavors do calm down into sherry, figs and the gentle vanilla from the nose. The citrus peel comes back in the finish but this time it’s restrained and refined as if it has learned a lesson and wants to apologize. A hint of cigarette tobacco punctuates the last moments before your second sip."

a beautiful Sherrymalt, in Macallan tradition. I admit that the flavors are easier to access than the 12er, so to speak. The malt is not quite as sticky, I would say. You can now keep what you want from NAS. But the Sienna is delicious and together with the 2001 Speymalt the winner of the evening.
    • Nose
Fresh as the 12er, sherry, sweetness, spices, but also something floral, a few lighter fruits, a little bit mineral, oak, orange, quince, spices, black pepper. I am very surprised by the slightly sticky nose of the 12 here, as it may release so much more flavors.
    • Taste
Sweet, sherry, honey, orange liqueur, tart oak notes, very nicely balanced, but also nothing surprising.
    • Finish
Sherry, oak, orange, some malt, some tobacco, bittersweet to the end.

A pleasantly surprising dram! A delicate Macallan with a lovely interplay of bright, fruity notes (oranges!), rich dried-fruit sweetness and oak-derived spiciness. Well-balanced with no sherry overload. Very savoury with a multi-layered range of flavours and textures. Smooth, and creamy with a long and warming aftertaste. Even a small drop of water works fine with this whisky.I thank Sietse Offringa and Beam Suntory Germany for the generous sample!

    • Nose
Opens with a subtle sherry nose, accompanied by plenty of juicy oranges, baked apples, and hints of bananas. Little honey, fine vanilla and a touch of cinnamon in the background, along with subtle oak and a whiff of white pepper. Elegant and mellow!
    • Taste
Sweet and malty start on the palate with typical sherry-derived flavours - dates, figs, and dried apricots, along with juicy oranges. This is complemented with a warming spiciness of black pepper, ginger, nutmeg and fine oak. Deliciously mouthfilling! Lovely notes of vanilla and raisins emerge, nicely intermingling with lingering dark chocolate and a touch of marzipan towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is long, creamy with honey, malted barley and vanilla. Fruity and syrupy with oranges, followed by a slightly warming spiciness of oak, ginger and anise on the tail.

With water: Lively on the nose after adding a few drops of water. Sherry-derived flavours and fruity notes, oranges in particular, remain while more oak spice is coming through. Still sweet and fruity on the palate with a slightly tamed but prickling spiciness of oak, pepper and nutmeg. The finish shows good length with a creamy, soft, even silky mix of malted barley, vanilla and honey. Gets slightly drier on the tail with fine oak and anise.

Strong sherry smell, ripe grapes, light vanilla, sweet fruits. A first sip is soft, but then increases sharply. Oh, not bad! Green apples, Christmas fruit compote. Strange combination, but quite interesting and pleasing. Then over time spicy, more mature. Overall, a nice malt, although you have to pay the name ...

The nose was quite disappointing and did not promise much but the taste of this is very good and harks back to the Sherry 12 we know. A much better dram that its two siblings and actually probably better than recent sherry 12s
    • Nose
Light nose. Freshly cut wood shavings. Farmyard straw. Nearly ripe peaches. honeydew melon. acetone. pineapple? A much fresher and fruitier nose that Gold or Amber.
    • Taste
The nose does not give much to go on but this is surprisingly nice! A rich sherried taste. Warm and full of spices (cinnamon, white pepper), milk chocolate
    • Finish
Finish is medium with lots of spice mainly white pepper.

    I seriously just love Macallans.

I have always found them much more interresting and rewarding than other sherried whiskies that I often find sickening.

This is my first Macallan NAS and all in all I give it thumbs up.

    Copper color with long legs.

Good fresh nose With honey, summerfields, flowers and spices. In addition to some malt and a bit of sweet sherry.

Taste is sweet, oily with a hint of Oranges and Apples and some spices (cardamom?)

Finish is long and dry. There are tannins and a slight bitterness. I can feel the oak.

    The Macallan Sienna
    (43%, OB 2013, 1824 series)

Nose: plenty of orange aromas, both in a juicy and zesty form. Clementines and peaches. A little honey and melon. Freshly baked apple and raisin pie. Hints of cinnamon and vanilla in the background. Also the lightest hint of polished oak. Quite bright and mellow. Mouth: again quite bright and honeyed. Surprisingly sweet and malty as well. Yellow raisins, orange syrup and ripe yellow plums. Apricots. Even hints of mango. Soft spices (ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg). Hints of cocoa towards the finish. Finish: long and fruity, quite syrupy again with oranges, light spices and mint.

I find this quite a feminine Macallan with bright, fruity notes and a surprising sweetness. Not your typical sherry influence, but good whisky (that could have been even better at 46%). Quite possibly the best choice of the 1824 series. Around € 75.

    Score: 87/100

    a really good malt
Comes to about the Macallan 10 or 12 years Sherry Oak for me
Direct competitors would be for me the Benriach 15 years PX, the Glendronach 15 years Revival, a Glenfarclas 15 years or a Linkwood 15 years GM
    • Nose
yes, that's getting closer to a Macallan
      clearly sherry
      Grape nut, orange, juicy-sweet
      coffee
    • Taste

expressive, but at the same time mild and creamy
beautiful oak note in the background

There's not much wrong with the Sienna. It is properly balanced and shows some nice aroma's and flavors. The Sienna would be a great introductory dram for someone who has never had whisky before.
    • Nose
Oranges, sweet vanilla, manderines. The Sienna has a faint nutty quality, and also some chocolate and toffee notes. Somewhere in the distance you'll find some wood spices. The nose lacks power, but is pleasantly balanced.
    • Taste
Dried fruits, golden syrup, apricots. Also some cloves and oranges, ginger and cinnamon buns. The palate is a bit watery.
    • Finish
Wood spices, white chocolate, dried oranges. Gentle, maybe a bit too soft. Short to medium in length.

Significantly more complex than the "gold", a breathtaking advantage over the "Amber". But no opponent for "Ruby", SO 12 and others
    That's better for Macallan.

    • Taste
Creamy and sweet, the Sienna lays itself on the tongue.Sherry and oak notes. Again raisins and chocolate. Background fruit.

A simple and effective dram. Quite powerful despite the reduction in the degree of alcohol, it is also well designed. An unpretentious NAS, which fulfills its role well.
    • Nose
The whole is quite vegetal, notes of green wood. Then come some sweet and light notes of vanilla, grapes, orange, wood. Apple pie, sugar rapadura.
    • Taste
Rather spicy and sharp. We find some notes of orange and apple, but it is especially spices, especially cinnamon that takes over. Honey notes soften the whole. A fairly homogeneous and balanced mouth.
    • Finish
Quite long and spicy. Some notes of mint.

This is one malt that has the flavour and aftertaste that the nose promises. Fruity, sweet vanilla, orange, nuts and perhaps chocolate. European oak spice is all the way in the background. It's very well made in my opinion. However, as always with these Macs, watch what you're paying. Luckily I bought this with a discount for EUR 46.

One sidenote, this is not a sherry monster as some notes on the bottle / label might imply. If you are looking for that, better buy a glendronach in the same price range. I've had this next to de Dronach 15 Rev and Bunna 12, and it's closer to the Bunna (minus the hint of peat) then the Glendronach (in my opinion). My guess is they used more than half american oak on the Macallan Sienna; which makes me wonder how that works, still calling it 100% ex sherry. I guess if it's been in there longer then 2 seconds you can call it ex sherry. Anyhow, who cares; the result is good and that's what matters.

I gave it one point lower than I would do blindly, maybe because it is NAS. Now I am not against NAS, but it would be nice if you would tell the maturing story on the label. A few months ago I bought a NAS from Laproaig - An Cuan Mor, where they told everything about how it was first matured in one warehouse for ten years and then finished in virgin oak for one more year, or something like that. That gives trust to the consumer what he is spending his hard earned cash on -> Take note Macallan!

Had a lovely taster at the Grouse Experience of the Gold, Sienna and Ruby.

The Sienna had some lovely sherry influences both European and American oak. I was greatly surprised by this one. The exotic flavors you have in the Fine Oak where present!

The colour is noticeably darker than the two previous expressions and the nose has a lovely mix of dried tropical fruits, raisins, sultanas and demerara sugar.  Some spiced orange gives it a bitter twist and this together with vanilla, caramel, golden syrup and cinnamon bark. In the palate there`s spiced bitter orange and gets sweet with delicious juicy dried fruits like sultanas and raisins and golden syrup and mango. Later on there`s ginger and cinnamon. Lovely! The finish is perfectly balanced -  nice mixed wood spices, dried fruits and butterscotch!

    Thanks for the sample, Vic!

Not necessarily a good value for money but no cap of Mac to the donkey. (Ah ah ah) It's a simple sherry, easy, alas a little weak in degrees of alcohol.
    • Nose
Dried fruits, wood, a lot of caramel, vanilla. It's funny, it is reminiscent of the Old Pulteney Liqueur, perhaps less iodized and sweet.
    • Taste
Super sweetish, easy, and good sherry. There is toffee, almonds, a few plants (traces of bitterness). It's very slightly creamy, but the touch is nice. By cons, a little more power would be good!

      Medium, caramel, dried fruit, vanilla.

    Finish: Mild, sweet and warm.

I understand that the Sienna is made exclusively of a split of first-fill Spanish and American oak sherry casks. No info on the proportion.

I think this is a wonderful whisky. I particularly enjoyed this second wave of spices and citrus on the palate.
    • Nose
Sweet but very delicate and not intrusive; raisins. A touch burning. Citrus - oranges; tangerines. Lots of nuts. Crème brule. Very complex and dynamic nose.

With water: cane sugar; nuts; jam of some sort.
    • Taste
Sweet; citrus; wonderful woody notes; dates. A great mouthfeel. Slight bitterness (grapefruit?).

Toward the end, there is a very strong second wave of wonderful spices - a spice explosion :) cinnamon, ginger; also nice citrus notes.
    • Finish
medium to long; nutty; sherry; oranges. not drying at all.

    I am not really
impressed. The Ruby is in a whole other league. All four whiskies were matured
on sherry casks, by the way, so Macallan went back to its roots a little, I
    suppose.
    • Nose
      On the nose I get
some subtle toffee and vanilla, with juicy oranges, white chocolate and some
toasted oak. Granny Smith apples. Something milky that I actually enjoy. It reminds me a bit of warm vanilla custard. A tiny bit
      of mint.
    • Taste
      It appears somewhat
watery on the palate. Some sherry and citrus and again that hint of white
chocolate. The apples return as well, this time with skin. Then some more
typical sherry cask influence such as dades and figs, among others. Not bad,
but misses quite a bit of punch.
    • Finish
      The finish is mildly
spicy and very soft, but very short as well.

  102. Drochaid scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Aroma: At the beginning subtle vanilla, persistent but not overpowering. Orange notes, spicy and pungent, green apples add freshness and balance. Then come white chocolate truffles, with an elegant oak note.
Taste: dates, figs and raisins, then nutmeg and ginger with hints of orange and apples, vanilla
    Finish: Gentle, lovely and warm.
Characteristics: The Siena color of the whisky comes from the exclusive use of first-fill barrels made of Spanish and American oak in which Sherry was previously stored. The taste of the whisky is convincing with nuances of dates, figs and raisins, followed by orange, apple and light vanilla.

  103. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur
