Best Distillers Edition!!! The taste is better, compared with the other Destillers Editions with 16 years maturing time ! This Distillers edition is a special version, the only one which is 18 years old! It is a very rare whisky (only 3000 bottles) an has got an old packaging, which is more beautiful i think!

Great part, great balance between peat and sweet fruit. I just enjoyed it as a sample, even if it is actually not very complex or could have a few more rough edges. It's almost too round for a Lagavulin.

Harmonious and mild, powerful and voluminous, peaty and fruity ... This DE is wonderfully harmoniously balanced and for me the best Lagavulin DE I've ever tried!

    23/23/23/23 (92P)
    • Nose
Creamy caramel shines in the Premium Snifter, oily legs pull their greasy tracks on the glass wall, and intense peat smoke rises. Mild and fruity, peat and slightly mineral smoke come together, raisins and caramel are added, abrasion from old orange peel in combination of lemons and grapefruit give off their sour aroma. Iodine, algae, seaweed and salt water give the Laga a wonderful maritime touch, grilled apricots play with pork belly fat soaked in butter, charred wooden elements emerge slightly smoky. Tobacco and leather are minimal, and suddenly my saliva is stimulated.
    • Taste
The first sip flows mildly and fruity through the palate, gradually peat and smoke are added, burnt wood and fly ash leave a pleasant tingling on the tongue. A slightly sharp film sticks greasily to the tongue, salt and pepper massage the tip of the tongue, and ashy streaky bacon and grilled fruit emerge. Citrus fruits end in sea salt and seaweed, iodine and mineral smoke followed by warm peat and earthy notes, a few dashes of espresso and lemon juice are added, roasted hazelnuts and dry leaves rest on the palate. Caramel and a touch of toffee, oranges and apricots, creamy fruit elements merge with smoky peat and maritime influences.
    • Finish
Warm peat and a hint of mineral smoke rest creamy on the palate before creamy, dried grapes and berries are added. Charcoal, salt, earth, dried fruits, citrus aromas, caramel and hints of fried bacon allow the aftertaste to rest on the palate for what feels like an eternity.

a terrific Lagavulin, heavy, sweet, dark, the nose is absolutely amazing, but unfortunately only 43%
    • Nose
      93 93
sweet, heavy, complex and round, at the beginning delicate maritime smoke spreads in the glass. In addition, there are a variety of oriental spices and dried fruits such as dried oranges and leather, damp tobacco, iodine and salt
    • Taste
      89 89
now more smoke comes through, unfortunately a bit watery, but very nice oak notes of tobacco and bitter cocoa, plus furniture polish, shoe polish and iodine
    • Finish
      91 91
beautiful, delicate oak bitterness and maritime smoke remain

    Nice balanced whisky.
Exactly the best Lagavulin I've tried
    • Nose
      88 88
The first nose is closed, dry: moss, iodine, a little peat and dried fruit.
After standing, reveals flowers, dried fruits, light haze and metal shavings.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pleasant, fresh. A bit oily. Caramel, peppercorn, a little iodine
    • Finish
      87 87
      Medium, sharp, a little knit.

Bet on the name of Grandpa Aunt, and the modern 16yo DE is not worth mentioning.
    • Nose
Cooked meat, pepper, toffee, caramel, honey, oak dregs, sweet orange, plum sauce, violet, peat, iodine, ink, tobacco leaves.

Super high sweetness and pleasantness, peat is relatively light, only stronger than springbank, the overall is extremely docile.
    • Taste
Oak burnt, black clever, peat, ink, maple syrup, preserved fruit, citrus, almonds, salt, pepper.

Medium, very low acidity, low fat.
    • Finish
Medium length, tobacco leaves, ink, pepper.

    • Taste
Soft, nothing burns, oily, less sweet than the 2000s, salty, tang, canned plums.

Fantastic, no comparison to the current Distillers Editions. He also does not need more Vol.%, But he is just as he is, just good.
    • Nose
Hm, very noble. The peat smoke is subtle, but wonderfully naseschmeichelnd. Roasted orange slices, juicy blackberries, blackcurrants, almond puree, everything perfectly coordinated, a round thing.
    • Taste
Full and oily, almost creamy, with more pronounced smoke than in the nose. A big ham, just taken from the smokehouse. Again redcurrants, now as a compote, British marmalade with bits, not so bitter. Pepper comes .... First, he literally glides over the tongue and then gets stuck everywhere. Very intense taste experience.
    • Finish
Long and not too dry, lots of spicy smoked ham, pepper, red berries. The finish takes and does not end.

Honestly, there is not much more than the classics of the genre from Lagavulin I did not catch. More saturated color does not say anything, because the whisky is dyed. Saccharous sweetness is well felt, which somewhat distinguishes this drink from classical lagavulin - and otherwise everything is according to the standard scheme: medical tones; peat; powerful smoky aftertaste. I would not put such high marks only because of 18 years and Pedro Khimenez. All this further separates this Lagavulin from the classical versions, although in general it has the right to exist. Speysadovskaya bitterness, citrus fruits also feel good in taste and aftertaste, but do not give rise to too high ratings.

Oh, if that had more bums ...
    • Nose
Juicy oranges, subtle smoke, slightly mineral, strawberries, finely interwoven, light impact of tobacco and coffee powder, later added a restrained citrus note
    • Taste
Sweet to strawberries, light smoke, very spicy, again quite mineral, getting drier, oak spice
    • Finish
The oak dominates, the smoke is below - keeps the finish alive, very spicy accompanied by the Sherry sweetness

The bigger, more mature brother, great part.
    • Nose
Peat and campfire ash, immediately recognizable as Laga, but then gentle blend of citrus, some sweet fruitiness (but also acidity), PX and some cigar, and clear vanilla to the rear
    • Taste
Less smoke than in the normal 16er, more malt, citrus, a little mocha, creamy-full but also elegant, sea and salt, clear sweetness and of course the campfire
    • Finish
Long, smokier than the '16s, chocolate with salt, iodine and smoke

Very tasty and with much more power than newer bottlings.
    • Nose
Sweet-fruity (raspberries, raisins, candied fruits), a hint of wood smoke, vanilla and caramel, PX note.
    • Taste
Sweet, creamy, flattering, like custard with fruit around the campfire. Then strong with a little pepper; pleasant dryness occupies the mouth; Smoke and oak build up in the background without becoming bitter or dominating.
    • Finish
Warming finish with enough power to be remembered.

  44. gango4 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

I would welcome a higher alcohol percentage, but it lacks in no way in power.
    • Nose
Pleasant dark smoke along with sherry. Dark fruits and a little barrel push through. No alcoholic note.
    • Taste
Very sweet with significantly more fruit and sherry than the 16-year-old. The smoke remains very restrained in the background, but complements the overall impression perfectly.
    • Finish
Dark berries remain sticky. The sherry smoke lingers for a few moments. Medium in the finish. The influence of the barrel can only be seen for a very short time and then the big part disappears pretty soon.

    • Nose
Sweet sherry, smoke and peat, leather, caramel, honeyed fruits, salt and bacon
    • Taste
Sweet, soft, the PX is dominated, flanked by dark chocolate, citruses, coffee and marzipan
    • Finish
Long, sweet then bitter, the sherry is in the background, ash, peat and smoke

  52. Gloin scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

The smell is a mixture of gentle notes and hidden power, like a sleeping giant. The vanilla is very strong and amazingly intense. In the mouth you can tell that the bottle has been open for more than two years, but the taste is convincing. Note: The bottle has been open for three years.
    • Nose
Smoke, vanilla, leather, a little orange, some sherry, wood, paper, in the background Salmiak
    • Taste
Very soft start, sweet at first,
then comes the smoke, but not very strong, again some vanilla, oak, leather, barely bitterness, very soft, yet powerful
    • Finish
Smoke, again with vanilla, for the first time a little medically, fire, some milk chocolate, long

  53. detachedblue scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Haven't got the chance to compare it with the 18 year old Feis ile 2016 edition, the extra two years in my opinion didn't add to the complexity here.
    • Nose
Peat and sherry, very sweet, seaweed. Old leather.
    • Taste
Sweeter than the 16 year old, the PX cask works a lot more than expected. Mellow and smooth, slight bitterness, dark chocolates.
    • Finish
Long and sweet, with gentle smoke and berry fruits.

  54. Segens scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

I have had the possibility to get the Laga Distillers 1995 next to the 1997 and 1998 and this one is so much better from my opinion. It is so much better balanced and if you have the opportunity to get one of these bottles you should go for it :-)
    • Nose
Such an elegant nose which is perfectly balanced and gives you an inspiration of how good an 18 year old Islay dram can be :-)

Smoke, caramel, barbecue/honey, sea salt, bacon - so the full palate of smokey sherry drams but the harmony is quite good on this dram
    • Taste
Generally I like drams with cask strength and stronger volume that is why this dram is quite shy in the beginning but is developing second by second its charm. The campfire spirit is quite there and you do not even wanna swallow it as it is so nice :-)
    • Finish
Very long and ellegant sherry finish. Well done!

This is one of the wonders of whiskydrinking. Everyone else and their moms seem to adore this very bottling. Except for me. I was really interested after countless raving reviews, and when I tried it... Meeh. Okay, the nose is definetly great. Sweet bbq smoke, earthy, marine, sherry and old leather. Totally my favourite style. But the palate was so underwhelming I was puzzled at first. Thin, watery, harmless and "too rounded". Maybe its the 43% and my cask strength accustomed palate, but this was a dissapointing dram overall. Tried it from the same sample on two different evenings, so maybe the sampled bottle was open for too long.

Just a few remembered impressions from a tasting ...

    Good whisky.

Unfortunately the nose didn't offer that much because of notes in the front ('window glass') where I couldn't really get through this time - it didn't get very round.

    The taste was very good.
    • Nose
Sea breeze, a little window glass (not really disappearing), hints of brine, dry peat.

Some salty/oily/citrus alcohol is well interwoven.

Hints of chocolate, hints of cherry, hints of some jams.

Smoked ham, just a little tar.

Later well rounded chocolate-malt impressions with peated and salted raisins.
    • Taste
Sweet and sour marmalade, peat, nice alcohol (citrus), hints of marzipan.

Warm and golden - fitting to a sunny autumn day.
    • Finish
Some Sherry casks, salty/sweet peat, old and wet wood.

It's a summer evening on the coast at Port Ellen. There is a barbecue going on with black halibut covered with a maritime marinade grilled on some woodsticks dashed with sherry. A really great whisky.

More% would have done him good. He is delicious anyway.
    • Taste
Wild and boisterous at the beginning. Then sweeter in the direction of dark syrup-like sherry. The smoke is only present at the beginning.
    • Finish
Without smoke, very sweet and neat long.

When compared with the regular 1995/2011DE, the 1995/2013 has a deeper and sweeter aromatic profile. The palate is very similar with the 1995/2013 being slightly thicker with a more complex and longer finish. Bravo!

    A very nice bottle.
    • Nose
      Oranges, subtle vanilla, peat smoke with iodine and algae character;
    • Taste
First peat, smoke, coffee and cold ashes; then arrive toasted and malty notes, vanilla slightly and classic notes of sherry including orange; all with a subtle salt.
    • Finish
Long, a dry hair, complex, it takes all the characteristics of the mouth by magnifying them.

nose: kippers, brine and sea water, strawberry jam, sweet, and a ray of
pure red fruit, like sunshine coming through a cloudy day (if you take
    my meaning)

palate: much sweeter than the 16, a woody sweetness,
which yields slightly to a very salted caramel and smokiness. light tar,
and a definite sootiness. walnuts, cured ham.

    finish: finish is
reminiscent of the 16, but there's more ham, and the fruit is more
noticeably red. a bitter tar runs in the back, but all in the manner of a
    charming Lagavulin.

This is very clearly Lagavulin, but
emphasizing the subtle sweetness, there is distinctly red fruit running
through this (it is PX finish, after all), and a gentle ham. The aromas
and flavors are more distinct than in the 16, but it's less seductive in
feel. All the same, this remains an excellent bottling, though it falls
just behind the slightly better integrated 16.

Get better with each sip. Top.
    • Nose
      Peat smoke. Fruity. Sherry.
    • Taste
Intense smoke and a lot of sherry sweetness. Something salty. Burns easily on the tongue. Malty. Maybe some chocolate.
    • Finish
      Strong. Very long and warm.

  74. Wild Thing scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    Unbelievable Long, warm finish.
    • Nose
Smoke and ashes over all. Then right behind them iodine and tobacco leaves. After a while, many dark, ripe fruits come to light (raisins, plums) ... The vanilla I can guess at best, too strong is the smoke and the ashes.
    • Taste
Malt, smoke and oak. Then she comes sweetness from the PX barrel. A slight tingling sensation on the tongue. Citrus fruits and some salt.
    • Finish
Long, salty, smoky and very warm, he says goodbye.

Superb balance of sherry and peat. More luscious and less peaty than the regular 1995 Distillers Edition, and a bit more integrated. I wouldn't be able to recognise the one or the other blindly though if they weren't side by side, i.e. they're not worlds apart.
    • Nose
Cherry, prune, caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate, lime and red apple. More sherry than peat, as opposed to the regular 1995 Distillers Edition.
    • Taste
Caramel, cherry, prune, chocolate, mocha, raisin and peat.
    • Finish
Now the sherry goes to the background. Peat smoke, caramel, chocolate, espresso. A little salty touch like smoked ham as well.

    a great whisky
harmonious and yet with a little inner tension through an interplay of flavors
I find it perfect that the PX Cask Finish character is rather subliminal and not so dominant
    i have touched the sky
    • Nose
initially surprisingly fresh with Zitusfüchten and vanilla
behind it heavy wood and smoke flavors> tobacco, leather>
    • Taste
Malt, wood, oak> then sweetness, dried citrus fruits, tingling fresh sweetness,> spanish late summer on the tongue .. wow port wine (sherry), olives (salt), small fish (sea), herbs (seasoning), sun (warming )

    • Finish
long> salt, smoke, there's Islay,> dark chocolate, cocoa powder with a little sherry cherry and again spain
      > at the very end old leather with best regards from Lagavulin;)

Compared to the 4/500 this one appears a little smoother with less peat and a little more oak, at least in the nose. In the taste it is quite similiar to other DE Bottlings, yet a little more complex. The extra one or two years of maturation really worked.

The first tasting made a product more "green", the second gives a rounder whisky, mellow, greedy.
    • Nose
      Beautiful orange hue!
The nose is a combination of sweet and subtle smoke with ashy notes, herbs, all softened by sherry (plum brandy, wood, candied orange).
    • Taste
The palate is soft, moderately sweet and oily. We find caramel, bitter cocoa, green fruits with a touch of iodine.
    • Finish
      Smoke, cocoa, caramel, spices (pepper?)

Tasted head to head with the `standard` DE 1995/2011 (lgv. 4/499). Even more rich, deep and complex than the standard release, presumably as a result of the extra year or two maturing. Slightly sweeter on the nose, with the raisins and stewed orchard fruits combining with toffee fudge, all beautifully balanced with the soft peat smoke. As with all DEs I`ve tried, a couple of drops of water really helped to release additional complexity. Sweeter, too, than the standard bottling on the palate, leading to the classic Lagavulin trademark finish, where salty aspects linger with soft peat smoke. I love the standard bottling, but this release (lgv. 4/501) is possibly even better in my humble opinion. At under £65 a bottle (albeit needing to be shipped from Germany), this has to be one of the best price:quality drams on the market.

Edit: after the bottle had been opened for a month some of the sweetness on the nose was lost, with a slight rubbery note appearing (especially apparent in the empty glass at the end of the dram). The palate remained unchanged. On opening my overall score was 92, reduced to 90 after being opened for a while. Still a cracking dram though!

    Tasting Notes by SCOMA :

Aroma: Intense peat and vanilla. A raisin sweetness keeps the smoke at bay. Iodinated peat and crisp toasted malt. Exhilarating and enticing.

Taste: Sweet and delicious, a clear, grassy malt note, then attacks peat, smoke fills the mouth. Selective and very salty seaweed. Coffee and vanilla with a glimmer of fruit.

Echo: Incredibly long, even for an Islay. Fruit, peat and long lasting oak.

http://www.weinkenner.de/2013/lagavulin-distillers-edition-die-story-und-die-aktuelle-abfuellung-im-tasting-27350/ Color: Old Gold / Bright Amber
Nose: Sparkling and refreshing orange with subtle vanilla flavors and a dash of lemon juice. Emerging peaty smoke paired with iodine, seaweed and algae. In addition a pleasant spice and notes of coal, ashes, tobacco leaves and a pinch of black pepper.
Taste: At the beginning rather dull with peat, smoke, coffee and dry ash. This is followed by malty Roestaromen with vanilla and a fruity lemon-orange mix. Only now, the sweet sherry flavors from the PX Fass prevail. In addition, the whisky smokier and saltier.
Finish: Long, soft and dry smoky. The peat and the oak wood settle through stronger, so that the finish is a bit tart. Towards the end, delicious cocoa and chocolate aromas are added, which remain on the tongue for a long time.
Comment: A wonderful, complex and multi-layered Distillers Edition!
Not so sweet, so that could give the impression that the PX Cask Finish was short lived.
