    Roosevelt

Jack Daniel's stayed away from politics, but when President Roosevelt gave a lied to speech in Tennessee in 1907 regarding the protection of the honest, hardworking American, he felt addressed and the idea of the Inaugural Release. Thinking that the President would be running for re-election in 1908, he decided to do an Inaugural Release for the occasion and send that bottle to Washington. However…Roosevelt did not run for office again. However, he did do so in 1912, but by then Jack had already died. His successor Lem Motlow decided to release the bottle, but Roosevelt had to give up on Woodrow Wilson. For 72 years this bottling remained just an idea, but in 1984 the company decided to release the decanter as a tribute to the 80th anniversary of Roosevelt's election. It is a bottle of no less than 1.75 liters.

This may have been bottled 40 years ago, but on the nose it is still very lively with corn and a truckload of vanilla, something floral that I have more of with Old No 7 and cold coffee with a spoonful of chicory. Pretty ordinary, right.

Nicely oily and immediately a bit spicy and drying. Lots of wood, here. Caramel, mocha, cocoa and cloves, that's pretty much the taste in a nutshell. Here too relatively ordinary, but not bad.

The aftertaste dries out the mouth even further and also provides that typical touch of varnish, which I am slightly less fond of.

The whiskey is not great, but the decanter has become a serious collector's item. Thanks to Jack's Safe from Roermond (NL) for the sample.
