    SMWS NZ note:

    Evokes the magic of Orkney

    Cask No. 4.170

NOSE: The bourbon cask maturation is immediately evident, with the first aromas giving vanilla, custard creams, pipe tobacco, chocolate, and balsa wood. Some peat and earthiness is suddenly apparent. We quickly switched into “coastal mode” to try to identify the dram’s origin. There are also some yummy savoury notes, which we all described as vegetable stir-fry. Plasticine and play-doh round out the nose.

PALATE: A soft, smoky peatiness is the first impression. Sweet malt plays wingman. There’s a stony, cold flint or mineral-like note to the palate, which was somehow described as being like Daniel Craig’s eyes. (Umm...?) It’s all very fresh and “outdoor -like”. Very, very Highland in style. Water enticed the wingman to come out of the background, making for a maltier whisky, reminding us of a particularly malty German beer.

FINISH: Teriyaki beef, gingernut biscuits, cooked white rice, and a gorgeous blast of warmth.

COMMENTS: Marvelously balanced and unchallenging, this dram is like your new next door neighbour when they first move in. Cool, cagey, and mysterious at first, it unravels and opens up over time to forge a great friendship. Robust, powerful, unflinching, yet suave, complex & very dependable. James Bond in a glass?

UK Tasting Panel: Sniffing this we could imagine lying on sunny Hobbister Moor – perfumes of heather bells and bog myrtle floating around – it certainly had delicacy (custard, lemon, apple, vanilla sponge) but with a punch of peat smoke and a savoury rub of herbs, chilli and salt. Water didn’t make much difference, to be honest. The palate seemed to whisper different stories to different ears – some caught the gentle heather honey sweetness, some were finding liquorice and Fisherman’s Friends, peat smoke, salt and earthy flavours, while others attended to the apple and refresher freshness. An extraordinary, multi-faceted dram that evoked the magic of Orkney.

    Colour:    Deep gold
