Woody notes and citrus fruits are dry and dry in the air, and eucalyptus and menthol are minimal again. The voluminous and powerful mouthfeel that has shaped the taste is hardly anything in the aftermath, tart wood elements announce the end of the Nachklangs with slightly grassy citrus aromas.
    • Nose
Intense amber shines in the Premium Snifter, on the glass wall sticks an oily and tough streak. Appearances of baked apple and overripe pear loosen slowly from the glass, a tropical fruit mix ends slightly flowery and grassy. The floral tones are enhanced by minimal caramelised sugar, while fresh eucalyptus and menthol notes are discreetly in the background. Gradually a slight citrus note appears, the trophic fruits become darker and more dignified. Sweetness plays with fruit, the alcohol is beautifully harmoniously integrated, the nose is complex and a little one-dimensional which does not harm this sweet fruit salad.
    • Taste
Mild, sweet and marked by dark yellow fruit flavors, the first sip flows over the tongue and leaves a subtle and pleasantly sharp film on the tongue. Minimal wood sharpness dissolves from white pepper, spicy wood tones end floral and grassy. Minimal tart wood elements mix with old and dried fruit flavor, abrasion of orange and grapefruit peels make for a slightly tart and sourish impact. The second sip is initially relatively mild, lax and one-dimensional, but quickly gains in volume and power. Chubby warmth in combination with a pinch of pepper pulls through the palate, pleasantly prickles sharpness between the tongue and the palate. The salivation is slowly stimulated, the initial fruit flavors turn into a grassy and floral bouquet. The wood tones are tart and dry, the fruit flavors also.
    • Finish
Woody notes and citrus fruits are dry and dry in the air, and eucalyptus and menthol are minimal again. The voluminous and powerful mouthfeel that has shaped the taste is hardly anything in the aftermath, tart wood elements announce the end of the Nachklangs with slightly grassy citrus aromas.

    Tasted blind.

Tough to score, this one. It's got an 88-89 point nose, but only if you like whisky from a very worn barrel with no bells and whistles, and the palate and finish don't quite manage to rise to my expectations. Still, I'm more than happy to have tried this whisky antique, because it's not every day you come across a palatable Old Rhosdhu.
    • Nose
The most prominent note is this old, worn oak softened and ripened by time, so whatever this is I'd guess it's over 20 years old. Reminds me of some 1990s Glen Elgins from Cadenhead, in that we have a slightly peaty, grassy distillate with faint oily touches and licorice, and then a cask that hasn't imparted too much secondary flavors, if any. Used piano keys (ivory and dirty fingers :) ), being in an old library, a whiff of fresh paprika, some burnt sugar, and Tyrkisk Peber candy in the back.
    • Taste
The mouth follows the nose exactly, but it could be more assertive. Feels like 43-46% [I was wrong, but then again old 40% whisky often feels like modern 43-46 %]. I could vote this is a Glen Elgin.
    • Finish
The aftertaste leaves too quick. It's sweet, oaky and grassy, with maybe a bit of camphor. Really nice and feels quite old, but the finish unfortunately takes it down a few notches from what I expected based on the nose.

Sweet, dusty grain store, green fruit, shortbread.

Soft, round, dry bitterness, not very special.
    • Finish
      80 80
      Dry, bitter
Sample from a bottle that has probably been open for a while. I can't agree with the other reviews.

Pfoe .. what a wonderful scent, fruity, very round and full, apples, peach, pear, everything passes by. Lime also runs through it as a common thread. Dash of basil and some walnuts. What a lovely nose.
    • Taste
      86 86
Here, too, the fruity with alternation of the sour of the lime is striking. And again so full and round in taste. Not very complex and challenging like the nose. I find it difficult to compare this to another whisky, it is still on its own .. Nice!
    • Finish
      86 86
Fairly short, average taste development but not complex.

Above all; a nice experience of a distillery unknown to me, whether this is representative / typical of old Rhoshdu? No idea but it was tasty and Old too!

    Haze of Lemongrass

Old What? Never heard of Old Rhosdhu? No worries, not many people have. Worldwide there are less than 40 known bottlings of this particular whisky. It’s a single malt that was produced between 1966 and 2000 by the Loch Lomond distillery. We’ll try an official oldie that was released two decades ago. For me, it’s the first encounter with this malt!

The nose is very soft – softer than a newborn’s backside. Very fruity on all kinds of European fruit with apples and pears up front, before it slowly turns somewhat tropical. Think mango and papaya. Some orange juice and lemongrass. A fresh note kicks in as if from eucalyptus and a fresh bouquet of spring flowers. A lovely surprise.

The malt could have done with a little more body, but the taste is pleasant indeed. Very soft on the fruit that already showed itself on the nose, with a soft peppery note. Some more citrus now. Think grapefruit evolving towards citric acid candy. Underneath simmers a note of cardboard, but that is kept under control effortlessly by the fruit. Again some eucalyptus and even some mint. Fresh and lovely.

You cannot call the finish long, but it certainly is good. Mildly drying it dances on the palate to slowly fade away in a haze of lemongrass.

I had no idea what to expect from this malt. First off I had never tried and Old Rhosdhu and second, it’s a golden oldie, of course. The old adagio ‘they don’t make ‘m like this no more, sir’, certainly rings true here.

Another grotesque and divisive 30+ Loch Lomond. 87/88.

Floral. Freshly cuted grass, honeyed fruits, eucalyptus, orange peel and lemongrass.
    • Taste

Slightly thin. Dry and bitter oak, grass and herbals, grapefruit and green tea.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Medium length, dry, citrusy.

A very gentle and fuity malt. A realy lovely malt that won't hurt anyone.
    • Nose
      89 89
Very gentle and fuity. Lemongrass. Gooseberries. Diluted orange juice, and a hint of tropicaliness (papaya, pineaple).
    • Taste
      87 87
Fruity and tasty, but in a very humble way, due to the low ABV. Lovely, really, though slightly watery. Generous gulps allowed!
    • Finish
      86 86
Not the longest ever, of course, but who cares? Just take another sip!
