[October, 2015]  I had another dram during an "Laphroaig Bicentenary" tasting at Bonn.In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  My notes state this is the legendary very first batch of 30 years old Laphroaig bottled for the US market (hence 750ml size) with a significantly higher share of sherry casks than in the later batches.WARNING:  This is another dram that is highly affected by oxydation (gets flatter) even after a short time.  So either drink the bottle with friends in one go (no problem, it is very quaffable) or refill it into smaller (completely filled) sample bottles right after opening!

A gentle older Laphroaig with unripe stone fruits and noticeable brine... at the end, a whiff of smoke comes out. The thing with these older Islays such as Ardbeg 30 and this one is that they are too weak to know if they want to be fruity or peaty, and also ultimately too weak to be complex, even though you know it can reach be if this was at cask strength... At the end, they are neither fruity nor peaty, and therefore, I can't honestly score this higher than a 91 points. At first I was at 92/93 points, but if a good Lagavulin jazz/feis ile is scoring at that territory, I definitely don't like this Laphroaig as much. Therefore, 91 points and I'm sticking to it!! Also, do not add water -- you've been warned.

At least, there is 2 versions of 750ml Laphroaig 30 years old.

2 versions are same at a glance. On the front label "LO1707", on the back label "LF0141".4 bottles I owned.

I found difference on BACK LABEL.

Earlier version, character spacing is narrow, I hope my pictures will explain that.(Earlier version ,I bought in 1999(right). Latest version in 2007(left).)

I bought 2 bottles of 700ml version, before.

My conclusion, Earlier version is 94 point, Latest Version is 91 point,

700 ml version is 83 point.

[March, 2004]  I had this during a Laphroaig rarities tasting at Rolandsbogen.

my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5. Unfortunately the notes of this tasting were lost.

Love the nose but the taste and finish are a bit weird.
The soapiness is putting me off.

Medium amber gold.  First whiff is mild, light salt and peat, strongest impression is that of iodine and medicine cabinet.  As it sits and breathes it improves significantly...grapefruit rind, spice, sweeter fruit and sherry notes.  Mouth is soft at first then a beautiful kiss of white grapefruit skin and more red fruits.  Bitter citrus oil that`s biting on the finish, spices.  The second pour is fantastic, it really opens up and the beautiful contrasts can express themselves.  As the bottle opens up the next few weeks, the grapefruit notes seem to fade, and it becomes overly "smooth" and less interesting.

Great stuff, the complexity makes it difficult to escape from the published tasting notes of others
    • Nose
Smoke and sherry. Some iodine (seaweed).
    • Taste
Smoke and a faint taste of burnt rubber followed by sweetness and malt. Complex combination of differing tastes.
    • Finish
Long with lingering peat smoke and sherry from the cask
