exceptional malt. Very fruity, unusually complex and with a great surprise when tropical fruit notes suddenly appear at the beginning of the finish. Very fine old stuff. Highly recommended.

[January 2023] At the beginning of every new year I open a bottle to salute all the great whisky men and whisky women who crafted these perfect old drams of the past. This time I selected this old and legendary bottling from the best time of the long-lost Lochside distillery...

...which was exactly vintage 1966 (by the way, vintage 1966 is excellent with almost all distilleries, except Glenturret). This Lochside is both impressive and very interesting/entertaining with a long lost old-style profile. Unfortunately, this dram quickly looses steam both on oxidation and reduction hence serve yourself small measures only and avoid water (and refill the malt into smaller bottles which are completely filled right after opening).

By the way, this was bottle no. 147 that I bought for 165 Euro in April, 2005.
    • Nose
      93 93
The colour is russetmuscat, and the nose is a little shy first. After some breathing it opens up greatly and offers a very interesting old-style highland profile with lots of waxes, herbs, nuts and tons of fruits (apricot, oranges, pineapple, peach, mango and more). After longer breathing the fruits vanish and more OBFs pop up (which I like too). This is a dram where oxidation does not benefit the nose over a longer time, so hurry with your nosing exercise.
    • Taste
      92 92
The taste is very complex too with several layers of different impressions rolling over my taste buds. The herbs and spices are stronger than with the nose, and this is fine to counter the fruits and sweet barley sugars. The wood provide a firm and confident backbone structure to all the other flavours, and they sort in gladly. This truly is a powerful taste, and it is perfect example of a long-lost style as you will not find any modern dram which comes even somewhat close to that profile. Everything is bold in here, the waxes, the nuts, the rancio, the fruits and and and... I like that!
    • Finish
      90 90
The initial mouthfeel is warming and instantly coating with some minor dry moments from the tannins which are no big deal. The finish is long and turns more the spicy-peppery side with strong support of the tannins towards the end. Water is an enemy of this dram, as most of the delicate flavours vanish completely and a rather old-wood tannic profile takes place both in the nose and on the palate. Stay with the neat dram!
