I tried the Glen Ord 1973 in the Rare Malts before, but this one is much, much better. A bottle will, however, set you back some 300 to 400 EUR. Thanks, Chris!
    • Nose
OMG, this is a very interesting nose! Loads of dried yellow fruit, toffee, coffee grinds, strawberry marmalade and mint. Reminds me a tad of After Eight. But mostly – and this does not sound good, but can be truly magnificent in a whisky – rotting oranges. And some soft woodsmoke. Lovely nose that can easily entertain you for more than fifteen minutes.
    • Taste
Ka-boom! Very powerful arrival – which is no surprise, of course – with a very waxy note. Lots of menthol, quinine, dried aprictos, mandarin, strawberry again, candy cherries and coconut. Earl Grey tea (which is kinda funny after the coffee on the nose). Very spicy on nutmeg and black pepper. Sweet, dry, balanced and old school. In one word: delicious!
    • Finish
The long, warm finish even hints at some peat in the mix. Could it be?

Need quite a while to open up and then becomes more and more powerful and peated

  5. dRambo scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Tasty and clearly recognizable as old Glen Ord - I like the special releases from 2003/2004 but a little better - seems to me much more mature than the number on the label
    • Nose
Malt, roux, flour dust, nutty roasted aromas, finely minced delicate smoke, honey, clearly lemon, caramelized sugar, cinnamon, a hint of clove, stone powder, grassy
    • Taste
Wax, citrus with lots of honey, bread dough, very nice texture for its high alcohol surprisingly mild and caressing, grass, geranium foliage, marten rides, tobacco, mushrooms, oak, markedly salty, roasted aromas but without bitterness, very lively and the barely perceptible smoke dances as a spice on the tongue
    • Finish
long and fresh with citrus, mint and herbs - in the finish aromas of old wood and some damp cellar with fungal attack

  6. Noface83 scored this whisky 87 points Specialist

Nose: wow surprisingly different. Fresh and lemony, slightly salty, caramel, grassy and a hint of menthol, clear smoke. Taste: powerful and aromatic. Lemon sorbet, salt fudge, cold black tea, some charred oak and again smoke. With water, the creamy and even salty but it comes also sweet sweet fruits to light. Conclusion: also a great part with which you can play beautifully with water. Surprisingly fresh and maritime.

  8. Allandale scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Body : big , soft , slightly syrupy.
    • Nose
Very fresh, assertive. Leafy, lightly peaty. Fragrant smoke.
    • Taste
Nutty malt, raisins, ginger, lemon peel, roses.
    • Finish
      Spicy, flowery and peaty.

  9. mister glenfarclas did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Glen Ord 23 yo 1974/1998 (60.8%, Rare Malts) Colour: straw. Nose: funnily very similar aromatically at first nosing, but soon to become very ‘exotic’ and fragrant, with some dried longans, rambutans, arak again, overripe strawberries, fruits au gratin, Something quite hot, like the foreshots of a fruit eau de vie, or a basket of rotting fruits. And like in the ‘RMW’, something meaty (hot ham). Perhaps some hot porridge as well. Gets very coffeeish after ten minutes – and some faint hints of tequila. Rather unusual and very interesting. Mouth: powerful but curiously flavoursome and balanced at such high strength. Quite some mint again but far less than in its older brother. Lots of dried tropical fruits (pineapples, coconuts), bergamot (earl grey), hints of rum, clove and pepper… Let’s try it with a little water now: it gets sweeter, with also some violet candies but quite simpler, even after quite some time. Anyway, a very nice Glen Ord, less spectacular but more balanced than ‘old minty’. Let’s rate it just the same: 86 points.
