  1. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A 46-percenter to rival any cask-strength whisky. Big-boned and feisty, if perhaps a bit frontloaded. Spicy and sweet in equal amounts. Beautiful maritime character with mere trace amounts of peat.

Pretty closed-up initially. At first, there's a slight glue note along with some ephemeral florals (rose petals, perhaps). Then sweetness rears its head: maple syrup and/or creamy honey. This is followed by a decidedly musty component: old dusty attic or damp cellar. Even with time and air, this remains a shy fellow, though progressively more oak is coming through. Water brings out bergamot and algae / brackish water.
    • Taste
      88 88
Builds up slowly to a MASSIVE hit of peppery spice on the mid-palate, accompanied by an almost equally huge blast of sweetness. Ginger and honey, if you will. Wow, no way would I have thought this was below 50% ABV if I had this blind! Definitely an intense experience and a fun ride, heavy on the bourbon wood. After a couple of sips, a red-berry fruitiness emerges as well as a faint idea of peaty water (rather than peat smoke) along with maritime salinity.
    • Finish
      86 86
Clingy, oily sweetness with nice little cocoa notes, but the latter only become discernible after the first few sips have acclimated you to the sheer power of the liquid. Before that, it's all ginger, pepper, honey, and rather fresh American oak, which is fun as well in its own right, but not as refined.
