Glenfarclas 12 year old at 104 American proof was first bottled in 1964
when tax on alcohol in the U.S. was based on the "Wine Gallon
Assessment" basis. In other words you paid the same duty whether the
strength was 75 proof or 100 proof. George Scott Grant did not approve
of "paying tax on water", and felt that if he bottled at 100proof the
U.S. authorities would check every consignment, so he decided we should
bottle at 104 proof and pay the tiny bit extra in duty.

There were 3 labels used over the period we bottled this, a plain
white one, a gold one, and finally a black one. All will bear the
Importers name at the bottom of the front label. For Capital Importers,
a final 1000 cases were bottled before distribution switched to Sazerac
    and the 105 was introduced.
