It's very refined on the nose, but on the taste it's a monster. :) Good stuff! 89/90.

A rather austere whisky but we can smell the fruits there behind, in ambush. Maybe after a few weeks of opening ...? But it is already very interesting as soon as we blow the cap.
    Tasted blind.
    • Nose
Yellow fruits and wax at the first nose. BBQ ashes. Really smoked and farmer / earthy then. Salty - yes, salty. Maggi. A little straw.
    • Taste
Nice attack on the fruits then here too the smoke takes over. More farm notes. A little spice (ginger). Discreet yellow fruits. Beautiful thickness, beautiful liveliness.
    • Finish
Long on smoke and spices, ashes.

Nose: lots of delicious fruits: green apples, banana`s, melons, pears and some red fruits. Citrus! Then there`s some smoothy peat and smoke, as well as some nice pepperish smell, some cinnamon, honey and last but not least: my favorite vanilla!

Palate: Fruits! And citrus! Lots of them, see above.

Finish: rather long, with a lingering taste of all the fruits, especially the caramel, the peat, the oak and the pepper!!!

The complexity and the profile of this Caol Ila remind me of the 1990 The Whiskyman for Massen, but with extra layers and even more subtlety. A VERY big Caol Ila!
    • Nose
In entry the smoked peat typical of Caol Ila, but of a great softness and a great subtlety. Melted butter, orange zest, toast, black mushrooms. It's complex! I love this kind of profile.
    • Taste
Sweetness followed by white pepper. Smoked peat covers the cheeks. Wet tobacco, a little sulfur. Here too, a complexity as I like them: things that happen, leave, cross, come back. A great moment of taste.
    • Finish
Coal, earth and ashes invade the throat. Tingling goes through the tongue. A lot of flavors come back in the mouth.

    • Nose
First of: lots of leather & leather/shoe polish with a slightly chemical touch, peat, mineral/stone-dust, cinnamon, citrus, fish flakes, some dark bread, some old wood as well as some autumn leaves, all quite savoury despite the cinnamon but very pleasant and promises an intersting development. (90)
Later: turning a tad sweeter, oat cakes, some cinnamon, an artificial/ester-y orange note, and for some reason I'm occasionally thinking of roasted chestnuts, a tad metallic. (87)
    • Taste
peat, somewhat plant-y peat at that, some straw but not farmy, canned fruits, faint dirty motor oil. (86)
    • Finish
nice oilyness, more peat, mineral, Zwieback, some citrus notes again. (88)

  9. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

N: nettle, pickle, smoke, citrus - lemon, sourish candy, exotic fruits and tobacco
T: smoky, bbq-sauce, spices, syrup, caramel, kiwi, pastry and bees wax
F: medium long with vanilla, earthy, spices, crackers and smoky

Nose: Fruity and maritime-salty with lots of honey. Lemon and vanilla with a hint of butter, smoky-oily, complex with some wood.
Taste: Creamy-fruity honey notes, which, however, quickly becomes bitter. Slightly medicated-smoky notes with salty oak wood.
Finish: Medium length, butter with coarse-grained sea salt, smoky, dull oak with peppery peat; bitter background and less well integrated.
    87 points (nose: 90 / taste: 87 / finish: 84)
