This is a really delicious sherried version of Mortlach, picked by the Whisky Castle in Tomintoul, Scotland, purchased during a Highlands vacation in October 2012. 12 years later the bottle is finally emptied. Richly sherried, this independent bottling of Mortlach was my second experience with the distillery's aged distillate.
    • Nose
Undiluted, custard, touch of sherry, biscuit, malt, graham cracker, sticky toffee pudding. Diluted, the sherry, biscuit and malt emerge more strongly, a little sour apple, orange citrus. Undiluted, dark fruits, sherry forward, raisins, plums, a dunnage note, sour citrus like orange and lime. Deeper pulls reveal mustier dunnage notes, earthen floor oak, etc. Nice!
    • Taste
Undiluted, strong sherry, plums, raisins, stewed dark fruits, needs some water, but just barely drinkable at full proof, it is that dynamic. Diluted, the sherry is muted and more in balance, still very present, but more integrated with the stewed fruits, plums and malty character. Really delicious expression of Mortlach. Undiluted, mmm, a rich stew of dark fruits that is savory, creamy and flavorful. Candied ginger.
    • Finish
Undiluted, long lingering sherry and dark fruit finish. Diluted, the lingering finish is still present, with the ethanol muted. Undiluted, medium-long finish that is citrus forward.
