Tasting of the 1978 Port Ellen from DL (WB6260) against its sibling from 1979 (WB31025).
    • Nose
      89 89
A lot of oil. Also, a hint of red fruit. I detect a very faint touch of embers. A completely different smoky note than the '78, which leaned heavily towards Laphroaig peat. What both have in common, however, is that the nose falls short of expectations. This dram still seems somewhat closed on the nose. Since it's only a 1cl sample, I'm being cautious and won't add any water just yet.

Pleasant sweetness of plum and wild berries. The sherry is clearly present. Nicely dry. Then, suddenly, a good amount of pepper kicks in, and a wood note emerges. It's also very oily with a touch of charcoal and tanak. The smokiness remains restrained, but the sherry has now receded. Just like its sibling, it now reveals itself as extremely multifaceted, constantly exploring new flavor paths. Towards the end, the fruit even takes on an exotic character, reminiscent of banana and passion fruit. There's also a hint of maritime character. The distillery's distinctive character is now evident, just as it was in the initial nosing of the 1978 vintage.
    • Finish
      90 90
Salt, mango, cocoa, and wood linger. It remains oily. The finish is long, returning a second time and leaving a pleasant warmth in the esophagus for a very long time. Here, too, the 1979 vintage manages to distinguish itself slightly from the 1978.
