    Colour: pale gold. Lighter than previous batches for sure. Nose: the 12’s more expressive, more obvious, while this 18 whispers and simpers, with rather a little sap and wood oils, branches, butter cream… It’s an elegant nose, but yeah, it’s no Wagner. Mouth: closer to the 12 as far as expressivity’s concerned, while there are unexpected touches of tequila in the arrival. Yes I’m serious. Then rather oranges, candle wax, salted anchovies, and certainly some salted chocolate. It is, I have to say, one of the most elegant readily available drams out there. In my opinion, eh. Finish: medium, sappy, smoky, and herbal. Drops of old chartreuse, for sure. The obligatory kippers in the aftertaste. Comments: the perfect gift, if you want to convert your neighbours or family to the glories and pleasures of peated whisky. Anybody not liking this needs to go see a psychoanalyst. SGP:455 - 87 Points.

    Caol Ila 18 years old, original bottling, 43% alc. Region: Islay, Scotland
    Nose: Typical Caol Ila: clean and fresh with sea flavors, phenol and seaweed. Beautiful peat smoke flavors and a delicate trace of oak wood. If this gets used to the smoke, a vanilla sweetie and a bit of lemongrass comes up.
    Palate: Rather mild on start, then builds up quickly. Phenolic peat smoke, some stockfish, a hint of tar and sea salt. Very little oak, but a slightly creamy sweetness and a few spices.
    Finish: Long and smoky. The peat smoke is less maritime and now heads towards the campfire on the beach. In addition, the oak comes out stronger, the spice with tannins completes the finish.
    Conclusion: A nice Islay single malt, smoky and harmonious.
    85/100 points (tasted 2015, approx. 90 €) Thanks to Tom Zemann for the photo (whisky in Wiesbaden)!

    Aroma: The typical Islay smoke, sweet berries, sherry, slightly acid, citrus, iodine (or the sea), Hustinetten;

    Taste: smoke, iodine (sea), strong oak, soft, dry yet sweet, herbal gums, traces of mint;

    Departure: medium, round (for a "smoker"), with raisins and milk chocolate and charcoal, long-lasting sweetness, pleasant, soft;
    Conclusion: The Lagavulin 16 very similar, delicious but not the high-flyer. Over time, it becomes more complex, but a pleasant islander is too expensive for goodness (110, - € list price for the 0.7 L bottle)!

    It `widely believed that the peat gives its best when it is young and vibrant, and that after 15 years of aging to lose some` of enamel. Caol Ila with his version of a 18yo is a very valuable evidence to the contrary. This combination of aging, sophisticated elegance and oily smoke shows that a peated whisky is never too old to be nicely balanced and powerful.
    The flavor and tradition of an island enclosed in a single bottle. Caol Ila 18 years is a mature, full-bodied whisky.
    The first surprise is the intensity of its taste, absolutely distinctive and recognizable. The second is its infinite delicacy on the palate, a taste full and enveloping, with notes of sea, vanilla, ripe fruit and wood.
