This 25-year-old Benriach from the “A Dream of Scotland” series beautifully demonstrates what long maturation in a refill sherry cask can achieve without seeming too heavy or overloaded.
On the nose, it's immediately present, but not harsh. Cherries and dark dried fruits take center stage, accompanied by caramel and a pleasant spiciness. Wood, leather, and a slightly bitter note of licorice and even a hint of Maggi seasoning add further interest, lending the wine an interesting depth. Nuts round out the profile, and in the background lies a subtle hint of smoke that supports rather than dominates.
On the palate, it reveals itself as beautifully balanced. The sweetness is present, but not overpowering; rather, it's soft and creamy. The spicy oak provides structure, while dark fruits and red berries contribute fruitiness. The nutty notes complement this well and make the whisky very well-rounded overall. The 52.3% ABV is well integrated; nothing tastes alcoholic or unbalanced. Here, too, a very subtle smokiness is noticeable, adding even more depth.
The finish is medium-long and becomes slightly drier. A hint of cocoa emerges, along with red berries and a touch of oak. It fades gently and lingers pleasantly on the palate without becoming bitter.
All in all, this is a very harmonious, mature Benriach. Nothing is overpowering; everything is well-balanced. It's not a loud whisky, but one that can be enjoyed in peace and that reveals a little more with each moment in the glass.
