Fantastic whisky, incredibly complex. The alcohol is practically imperceptible, the mouthfeel is smooth and oily.
My bottle is from 2010. With the old bottlings, the “Product of Japan” is capitalized on the front label at the bottom left.

Light, fruity and unassuming. Some apricot, mango and buttery caramel.

A very smooth, oily mouthfeel with more caramel, strawberry, barley and some smoke.

The finish is rather short but the oil remains and a faint offering of smoke. This is a lovely well balanced malt commensurate of the detail and praise the Japanese and their whiskies have earned in recent years.

N: Lots of information all at once: wood, sherry, spices, cherries, those little italian figs with syrup, play-dough and Calvados herbs wrapped in bubblegum.  Theres some ‘Caledonian’ floorboard wax varnish here [drinking a Caledonian '64 as i write this].  Also, sherried xmas cake with a strong waxiness. Theres liquid plant food here, more concentrated than baby bio and an old tea leaf note. Theres a dirty/gritty edge that i can't pin down. Lots going on.
T: Surprisingly light and oily [its well underpowered], not much if any sherry [oloroso] but lots of wood.  Again, a Caledonian waxy vibe and lot of wood and vibrant wood spices directly from the cask. Pepper spices appear on the tip of the tongue at the later stages, and….hmmm, i got it ECHINACIA!! Tastes like a bourbon cask, with a sherry finish at best.
F: Sweet for sure but a woody bourbon finish, maybe a little wood smoke and yep, that echinacea as clear as day. So pleased i got that, it was bugging me for ages.
C: Well, so much to say as so much happened. I have changed my mind a few times over this dram.  Firstly i decided it wasn't all that aside from the nose. However theres a lot going on, on the palate too and the old fashioned viscous body is worthy of an accolade in its own right. Those wood spices are unique with that unique echinacea note playing well with the 'bourbon'/'sherry' sugars. I had initially scored this lower, probably because Im not sure i really dig it - but its really different, a whisky maverick no less. Shame its only 43%.

    Scores a B+

Rich copper pour.  Nose is sherried elements and green herbs, mint like.  Some fuel, and something very odd that's almost like fermented rice.  The longer it opens the more strange fermented grains and rice come out.  Orange candy and rancid rice.  Mouth is hot at first, becomes green and young pretty quickly, then more of those rancid notes.  Finish is decently long and hot with some spiced wine, orange peels.  Thin and strange, with some interesting flavors.  As it opens more it's more elegant, with darker fruits, quite pleasant.

"Both Suntory YAMAZAKI 12- and 18- year old single malts are aged in casks of three different kinds of oaks: American, Spanish and Japanese. This gives Suntory Whisky its unique quality. Each drink has a distinct taste. The 18-Year is a full-bodied whisky with spicy cherry-like tones. The toffee aromatics of this copper-gold colored whisky offer a pleasant, long, dry finish." - Distillery
