  1. Thermidor scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

On first nosing this bottling feels like it has quite a bit of character, but water tames it quickly, and what I'm left with is a pretty nice Caol Ila with an unusual amount of kippers, but nothing more. Would have been a good deal when it was sold at the distillery, but there is no point in buying this at an auction.
    • Nose
Right after pouring it's like liquid kippers. After a while in the glass a faint dry oak note comes up, then sea salt, rocks, and quite a bit of dry soot, like burning old dry logs. Some soft tar comes up with water, and also that expected citrus. With more water it veers into ashtray territory.
    • Taste
Really punchy neat. Mineral salts and seawater. Chamois leather, waxiness... actually the wax here is surprisingly strong. It coats your mouth after a moment and helps a lot with managing that high strength. Surprisingly just a few drops of water kind of tame it, accentuating the tar and bringing out some spicy, peppery touches. With more water I start to find the ashtray here too.
    • Finish
Salty, with sea water and white pepper and alginate.

    N-
Deep kippery notes of fish net, warming ginger and light ginseng and
black berries. Underlay with mashed green leaf. Water drawn out more
marine note of seaweed and salt, with vegetable, dusting floral and
    trace of caramel.

P- Mouth-watering. Soft rooty smokes sphere around thick spicy candy with touch of brine.

F- Long and warming at the back of throat. Subdued cold smokes. Chewy and lip smacking strength.

If I ever get to Islay
(hint to my dearly beloved), I am getting me a bottle of this.
    • Nose
The nose is quite sharp on sweet peat, but also fat
like famer butter. The maritime elements are strongly pushing forward, much
more so than on older bottlings. The fruit is therefore overpowered by ashes,
seaweeds, salty and a dying bonfire. Very good, though. It even has quite a
sour edge, which reminds me more of a Laffie or a Bunna.
    • Taste
It is a whole lot sweeter on the palate. The ashes and
seaweeds are pushed back by apples and citrus. Then the peat rears its head.
Very powerful and grand. Oysters, lime zest, vanilla. In that regards, it is
much like the Natural Cask Strength. Becomes sweeter all the time.
    • Finish
The finish lasts forever and remains smoky and sweet
      until the very last moment.

These Destilleries Only bottling is really worth it. It is far better than many festival performances.
    • Nose
The nose is slightly stinging. Phenolic, medicated, smoky, peaty.
    • Taste
The taste is complex. Smoky, peaty, salty, peppery, dry.
    • Finish
The finish is long. Peaty, smoky, salty.

  13. Lafroy scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Notes very similar to Laphroaig. A lot of citrus, peat sweetness and smoke, phenols, ashes, sourness, lemon peel, red tea and a little bit of hot asphalt.
    • Taste
Powerful citrus notes, peat, smoke, burned wood, grilled pepper, smoked bacon, a lot of sea saltiness, car shop with hints of engine oil and a lot of peat sweetness.
    • Finish
      Long, peaty, smoky and salty.

This one I bought when I was visiting Caol Ila in 2009

  15. corbuso scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A very nice dram, with a good dose of sherry and at cask strength. More intense than the Feis Ile 2009 edition.

We tasted this whisky at the distillery summer 2008 and fell immediately in love. We bought it!
