Sometimes you can get samples of a whisky that's long out of print—or at high prices on the secondary market and at auction. This 16-year-old Springbank was bottled exclusively for the Danish market in 2011. It matured in a port hogshead, is cask-strength at exactly 53.0% ABV, and has a beautiful red-gold color.

    • Nose
On the nose, the whisky is promising, with a slightly dirty note without immediately developing smoky notes. There's a creamy fruity note with red fruits, raspberry syrup, a touch of acidity, and peach. Added to that are spicy notes with roasted aromas, leather, and wood. Overall, the nose presents a lovely blend of fruity wine aromas with a play of sweetness and acidity, along with tart wood spice with leather and cocoa-dusted dark truffle pralines. Smoky associations are also present in the background.
    • Taste
On the palate, the whisky is rather creamy and spicy, with a slightly more pronounced smoky aspect, which remains in the background and contributes a somewhat dirty association to the whisky. Overall, it is creamy in the mouth with a hint of red wine gum. Then light smoke, cocoa, and dark roasted almonds take over.
    • Finish
The whisky finishes with a slightly dry finish, dark red fruit aromas on the palate, and a touch of dusty cocoa. The Campbeltown Funk features light peat smoke and a hint of cigar tobacco.

It's the light smoke, which doesn't come to the forefront but is always present, that gives the whisky, with its dark wine aromas, its maturity and complexity. The aromas aren't forced, but rather well-interwoven. This is a whisky that's enjoyable to drink, yet still has enough rough edges to make it a truly memorable experience. It's wonderful to be able to try a Springbank like this from before the big hype.
