For the love of PX, as the name would suggest this is definitely a *BOMB*. The cask influence is the dominant factor here and if that is what you look for in a dram (as I assume most/all members of the SBWAS will be), this will be a dream. From the numbering of the cask we can probably assume it is a finish but that was definitely a high quality PX Puncheon. Thank you to Sean and the folk at Glenallachie for making this happen! Value (£110) : 6/10
    • Nose
On the nose I get a wonderful allure of sweetness. Classic heather honey along with some thick syrupy treacle. Then some oak tannins with leather and dried tobacco. The fruits come later with raisins, dried figs, dates and sultanas aplenty. Burnt caramel on a crème brûlée. Some coconut cream with palm sugar even appears giving it that richness. Plenty of dark chocolate and some bitter orange peels. A touch of minerality like wet rocks and some cooling menthol. Rounding out with some spice I get candied ginger and cinnamon. Even with all those bold flavours, the nose still seems quite refined for me, if I were to have this blind I would have guessed it were in it's late teens.
    • Taste
It's got a wonderfully thick and oily texture on the palate. That sweetness from the initial nose is almost amplified here. Plenty of deep rich sugars coat the palate with Muscovado sugar, maple syrup, Manuka honey. Almost juicy raisins and sweet Medjool dates along with a touch of almond powder. Dark 80% chocolate and treacle toffee. Again that mineral note that I correlate with Glenallachie spirit. Some deep bitter notes of freshly brewed espresso. Orange peels, cinnamon and nutmeg reminds me of a Christmas cake in a glass. I can't wait to see how this develops further with time.
    • Finish
A very long finish. Initially it is all about those rich sugars from the palate being carried over. Once that dissipates, I'm met with drying oak tannins of old leather and tea leaves. More espresso notes. Some of the crème brûlée returns again. Dried figs here in the finish along with a tart plum note. That Glenallachie minerality just lasts forever here on the finish as well as some flakes of sea salt. A nice cooling peppermint note. I’ll have another please!
