1141-CAMPBELTOWN LOCH BLENDED MALT SCOTCH WHISKEY 46%
...some people get goosebumps just thinking about blends, especially with the name Cambeltown. In the case of this edition, I have to say it's exceptionally successful. Drinkable, unconventional. It has everything I like. It's a manageable strength, sweet, salty, and smoky. There's no "young age" issue—it's simply well-constructed.
    • Nose
...the first time we try it, we already have a faint trace of smoke, it seems dirty. There's saltiness, sea salt, a bit of marshy sea salt, and a touch of herbs. The longer we sip, we get a bit of oily rags, engine oil. I set it aside and check what's in the empty one – it's the same as the full one, only everything is duller, somehow more delicate. Instead, fruit appears, some "ourse," some exotic. It's hard to clearly identify. There's saltiness, sea weed. I go back to the full one – nori, coastal vegetation. These are ambiguous fruits, processed into a peach sauce for meat or something. All in all, these are the kinds of flavors I like. I'll spend a moment more… Burnt caramel, hot coffee grounds. It's a blend, but so far, a well-constructed one.
    • Taste
...it starts out quite mild, creamy, sweet, vanilla-like, with a pleasant burn. Soon, this sweetness is joined by saltiness, which further enhances these flavors. If the fruit is grilled, smoke-charred, fire-scorched, burnt—pineapple, sweet pepper, smoky lemon—it's not bad. A tobacco dryness appears, a bit of hops. That's all, really. Another portion travels down the throat—everything that was there is still there, only the order of appearance changes. A delicate spiciness appears. Not off-putting. It all ends with a sweet-salty, sour, and simultaneously bitter aftertaste. No matter how you look at it, it's drinkable. I like it.
    • Finish
...quite long and spicy, too. Warming. It's practically a repeat of all the flavors. Roasted sunflower seeds, black cumin, a bit of almonds, and chopped nuts join in. It all lingers and ends with a smoky, bitter aftertaste, reminiscent of burnt bread crust.
