[May 2025] I had not that many good Braeval drams so far, and the best was an old Madeira-matured vintage 1977 (WB24620) - so I am curios about if this Port-maturation worked too (which is not always the case)...

...and it did! No, it is not a spectacular dram, but why should every whisky be spectacular? This would be boring too. I could drink several of these drams in a row without getting bored about both nose and taste. Slàinte!
    • Nose
      88 88
The colour is quite dark at mahogany, and the nose offers a fresh and somewhat old-style Port profile with dozens of different fruits and no acidic impressions. The latter happen very often with modern wine maturations these days, and stem from "designed" casks - I do not like these acidic winey notes. This dram is a pleasure to sniff, even despite it does not offer the complexity of much older maturations. But it compensates this with an enjoyable freshness easily.
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is very fresh and quite impressive for a Breaval dram, thanks to the perfect Port maturation. It offers a strong combo of barley sugars, wooden tannins and wine flavour without any flaw. Nothing spectacular about it, but very enjoyable - and very chewable.
    • Finish
      88 88
The arrival is warming and coating, again without any acidic impressions what I like. The finish is of medium length and and turns a little sweeter towards the end, with more fruity notes popping up. There are no distracting moments despite quite powerful woods until the very end - this dram was bottled at the right time. Some water strengthens the bitter side of the dram (tannins)while a further reduction levels this out again and smoothes both nose and taste. I like this dram best when neat.
