This whisky purchase was essentially an "accident," but ultimately turned out to be a stroke of luck. I wanted to bid on a whisky from the year I was born, 1967, as cheaply and as good as possible. This whisky was cheap, so I raised the winning bid from €381 to €385. The auction was still to run for nine days, so I assumed I would be outbid. By the end of the auction, I had purchased the whisky without a review, with very little expectation of its sensory characteristics.
    • Nose
      93 93
Fruity, sweet, with an excellently integrated alcoholic note. Overripe plums, marzipan, sweet cherries, and forest honey appear on the nose. There's little alcoholic aroma. I also detect heavy red grapes and a hint of oak. A sherry cask was definitely involved in the product's creation process, and not a bad thing!
The smell alone is absolutely captivating. And the price of €385... every cent is well spent.
    • Taste
      90 90
Very few peppery notes, a lovely sweetness comes into play. The whisky is now relatively straightforward, on the pleasantly fruity side, with cherry and red fruits. No overpowering aftertastes; very good. The alcohol is present, but not overpowering.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finish is very long and equally pleasant. Here, I detect plums again, not as overripe as in the nose. The red fruits also come through in the finish, with a subtle peppery note. Right at the end, at least 6-7 minutes later, the sherry cask waves goodbye once again. For me, a perfect whisky; the best I've tasted so far.
