  1. kingoaa scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

Nose has sea salt, anise, candied ginger and pine resin with a whisp of peat smoke. Got some Sherry notes on a 2nd nosing. On the palate there is a subtle sweetness, slight saltiness and a light woody taste. Touch of water made it more mellow and rounded. Finish is medium length with ginger and slightly bitter wood notes.

This definitely sits in the ‘better Laphroaig’ category that redeems itself against the 10 YO which I detest. For the price, I can’t find the value in this bottle when compared to other bottles at this price. It does help me create a better sense of Laphroaig’s position in the Islay line up—to me, it’s the combination of a high peat and drying, short, aperitif-like profile. This bottle seems richer than some others (quarter cask, 10 year), and perhaps it’s personal preference, but I find this price point more offensive than the $120 I see for Lagavulin 16 in some markets). This note generally tracks with an earlier note out of a sample bottle.
    • Nose
      85 85
Woodsmoke, candied ginger, lapsang suchong tea, brine, tar, wet rope, sweet tobacco.
    • Taste
      83 83
Medium mouthfeel, feels hotter than the stated ABV. Initially, some tea-like qualities, with a drier profile. A slightly tannic grip throughout the palate, with the obvious smoke, brine, and touch of saline on the lips. The underlying distillate comes off as mass produced and pedestrian.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium-to-short. The smoke intensity clearly persists, but the overall finish is dry and short, and a bit bitter. Ultimately, I could be convinced I just finished the lukewarm dregs of a lapsang suchong tea.
